This was a choice mind you, they could've picked someone like Leonardo Da Vinci if they really wanted to keep that whole "Tsukasa associates (x) with (y) and Rui focuses (x) with (w)" and also keep the double meaning.....

I'm gonna yap about this localization so I can get thoughts out and also as a plan to write smth more coherent.

So. A common statement used to "prove" Rui is queer 4koma. (Prove in quotes bc you there are various interpretations of the text, and while he has queer coding that doesn't equate to queer baiting or him being canonically lgbt.)

In it, Rui compares himself to gay scientist Hiragana Gennai, who was a polymath and also worked in pharmaceuticals, due to them both being highly intelligent. Tsukasa asks if he wants to be known/recognized for that. The humor comes from Rui and Tsukasa having different views on Gennai and who he was, with Rui viewing him as an inventor and Tsukasa, while knowing him for that, also viewing Gennai for his sexuality.

The English Localization lacks this nuance, as Edison was most likely heterosexual, whereas Gennai was homosexual. This reduces the joke to Rui Boasting about his intelligence. I personally think Turing should have been used to maintain this double meaning.

In my opinion, when using this panel to say Rui is gay, it puts that interpreter in the shoes of Tsukasa, who views Gennai for his sexuality. In the end, the fan/observer takes in Rui, using this panel as a way to "show" or "prove" sexuality, instead of observing character. A misaligning of ideals (/neutral) parallel to the comic.

(I do not think it's bad or wrong to read Rui in a queer lens in this scenario. In fact I encourage it. This is just a look at it through my personal opinion)

Thinking further about why this specific localization choice was made, Edison is a well known scientist, just as Gennai is. However, thinking about what scientists in the west are well known for their homosexuality, there are notably less.

Homophobia and colonialism are closely linked, and homophobia was often being implemented due to the spread of "western values" as well as/encompassing the Catholic church. Japan was more closed off while these values were spreading, whereas the places where the English localization would be found were observing them.

Therefore finding a localization that fits both criteria (A. Well known scientist, B. Known to have homosexual tendencies) is thus a more difficult case (I mean Alan Turing exists, this isn't me defending Sega guys I promise. Then again he isn't as well known as Edison).

This is like 1/100th of what I wanted to go into and it's kind of rough around the edges but I hope you get a little of what I intended to convey :)

The name 'Guzma' comes from Guzmania, a flower species that comes from Brazil, southern Mexico, Central America, and then northern + western South America. (And in Germany his name is Bromley, which is from the family Bromeliaceae, origin family of Guzmania)

Given with his facial features, and his build, I entirely believe he's supposed to be from somewhere South American, and therefore Latino.

Hawaii, has about 138,923 people who are Hispanic or Latino which is about 10.1% of Hawaii's population.

But I won't stop at that, I think he's actually mixed. Hawaii, if you looked at those links lolol, is a very big melting pot where the biggest population is people from Asian origins. So like, in all sincerity he could be mixed with something Asian, which is vague, but I'd say Filipino (or hell man! Hawaii has such a big population of mixed he could be Latino, Filipino and White!!)

But to answer the question of 'Who's Talking Like He's Black' part, I think there is no such thing as 'Talking Black', it's just the environment you grow up in. If you grow up in an environment where everyone is White, you're going to develop Whiter slang, if you grow up where everyone you know is Puerto Rican then you're going to start using their slang. It's not that but the phrase 'Talking Black' is inherently racists due to protruding stereotypes so even then I wouldn't say he's 'Talking Black' (I AM NOOOTT CALLING YOU A RACIST BTW LOL!!!)

As a punk, you should not be conforming to a mold of what it means to be yourself.

It's actually getting out of hand.

On my other post I mentioned how the media shapes your view of a culture and you consume that warped view, and it's entirely applicable here.

I am no genius, I don't claim to be, but I see what's happening around me, and around me I see younger people and newer punks who think being punk means 'retaliate no matter what' without thinking about the consequence of that retaliation.

I've seen younger punks around me in school fight battles that were never worth fighting, taking out their aggressions on a middleman or the lowest hanging fruit instead of going straight to source. Fight back, yes, but don't take everyone out with you.

I've seen countless forms of media showing time and time again, younger people, being the ones to start the reckless fires. People thinking with their hearts, not their heads. (And yes, I can also easily say that these videos are only seen by me because the media is trying to warp my view, but most of these recordings, photos, and audios were taken BY the people committing the act. I've only noticed a pattern.)

Newer punks that come from social media either consumed a bastardized version or consumed the concept of it. There is nothing wrong with silent retaliation, all retaliation is retaliation. There is nothing wrong with two punks to have very different ideals when at the same protest, it is okay to be punk and consume massive media. Not everything you do has to fit into this narrow view of what it means to be punk.

You don't have to throw out your closet and only thrift, you don't have to give up your interests because it's something like video games.

You do not have to fight every battle.

Fighting restlessly in all directions makes you go in no direction. Arguing with the staff at McDonald's, or picking fights with teachers at school, achieve absolutely nothing.

Throwing Molotov cocktails at EVERY police car you see, is absolutely doing things but we shouldn't think "Loud = Violence".

You can be punk and be religious, you can be punk and be a scholar, you can be punk and be a hoodlum, you can be anything and be punk, your background, interests, friend groups, nothing, shouldn't make you think you can't.

Just be smart about what you're doing. More importantly, stay safe.

The people who don't use the resources think they have the right to take it away, in other words, the politicians who don't consume adult media through these platforms think they have the right to take it away.

Not only is censorship done nothing good for anyone but it actively violates everything we as a whole society have been pushing forward for. In the rise of the 'clean girl' and 'tradwife' on tiktok and instagram, we have see the start of loosing voices and people's identities, going back to rigid norms that should've never been normal in the first place. By pure proxy of this, people are 'sticking it to the man' by becoming incels who stay in their bubbles and try to ignore what is happening outside.

Even then, when you find your group, your niche, you never get to dive deep due to these very censor-shipping. We lose origins to cultures that existed long before the internet ever had the chance to find it, all because it isn't how the group who controls it wants it.

They get demographics to associate themselves with the version of a media or culture they want you to see, and then you get a bunch of sheep who would never dream of the day that people embrace themselves because 'embracing' means nothing because 'nothing is happening'.

We're turning sensitive, we're turning nihilistic, and we are turning ignorant and I will die with these words out in the open before I will ever lie to myself and say this isn't happening. It is happening and it will continue.

The people will use AI before they use their own heads and we're seeing drops in media literacy with people using their emotions or impulse thoughts to come to their conclusions, never looking inward or stepping back to see the whole picture. People are not focusing on the details unless cherrypicked to their very liking and very few speak out on this.

To the people saying we will revolt, revolutions happen when starvation takes affect. We are depraved of our consumer rights, but we are yet depraved of food. Humans only start truly making a difference when it's their own lives on the line, and if everyone is affected, then everyone gets involved.

As far as I’m concerned, pokemon villain writing peaked with Guzma. Legitimately worried about the erosion of culture due to hyper-tourism surrounding their sacred rites and practices. Abused as a child, ran away from home to start his countries only youth hostel for similarly troubled kids, and funds it with crime. Bug type specialist, with an ace that is mostly known for its first stage being cowardly. Cultivates a big scary persona as a defense mechanism to protect himself and his members, no one can beat big bad Guzma, so they don’t have to be afraid anymore. His grunts trust him enough to ask him for help when they screw up, despite the fact that they all come from troubled homes. Was so significant that pokemon switched from having cartoonishly evil bad guys and teams to the current model of “sympathetic and understandable antagonist that has some very good points, even as they oppose the protagonist, and is in some way actively doing good in their community by supporting those who are the most in need of assistance, due to some legitimate failing of the current system.” There is a cartoon villain looming behind him, but they’re a twist and not the main team presented. Everyone wants to be him, but they can never replicate the perfection that is this man.
