Connoisseurs of Contemporary Manners(Tosei fozoku Tsu): The Geisha Style || Kitagawa Utamaro Just like roses, women bloom, get picked up and wither away in no time. But, when they meet someone who knows how to appreciate them, they would always stay in full bloom. As I researched Kitagawa Utamaro’s works, I discovered how he paints “large-headed pictures of beautiful Japanese women” from the red light district. I was overwhelmed by his works and had no idea it’s actually about prostitutes. I wanted to not post my work anymore since I wasn’t really comfortable with it after knowing the real meaning behind this piece, but my friend told me how it could be a way to raise awareness of how prostitutes still exist until this day.
