Cole didn’t much care for the library. It wasn’t that he didn’t enjoy the stories. He loved the stories. Especially the ones with rabbits and dragons. He’d even written a few of his own. A series about a land far far away where he had escaped the pain and despair that he felt, where he had escaped his father’s wrath. In that land he did not feel pain. He did not need to eat so his father could not starve him for days on end. He just helped people. He understood their pain. Of course, that was just a story written in a series of journals that his father would burn if he found. He didn’t care for libraries because of all of the people. The kids at school were mean to him. They didn’t understand him. Didn’t understand the way that he spoke, his riddles and rhymes. When they touched him he would close into himself and freak out and they all looked at him like some sort of monster. Dingy and dirty.
When the boy spoke up, he doubted that he was speaking to him and he ignored him for a moment longer before finally looking up to meet his gaze. Well—not quite meet it. He couldn’t look people in the eyes.
"You didn’t forget. You—-don’t belong here." His outfit gave him away. A school uniform from one of the more expensive schools. Cole wasn’t trying to be mean, he was merely stating a fact. This young man didn’t belong here and he didn’t have a student ID number, but he needed one. "What sort of book?"
The other boy didn't seem to be paying much attention - at least, it seemed that way before he finally looked up. And he caught Asher a bit off guard - telling him that he didn't belong there made him flinch. He clenched his jaw, almost ready to tell him to forget about it, to ask the librarian himself for some sort of visitor code. But the boy asked him what he was looking for, which meant that he was probably willing to help him. Plus, he did have a point - he didn't belong there. His uniform probably made that fairly obvious. Asher hesitated for a moment before reaching into his pocket and pulling out his phone, where he'd written the name of the book on his to-do list.
"Ah - it's a non fiction book, for research. You see, I'm writing an essay - on consent in medieval literature. I have the author's name and the title here, I just need to bring it up in your computer's registry."

Cole ignored the man as he spoke. Or rather—more of a vessel—something more like him. Hollow and empty and filled with light. A spirit. Or maybe a God. He couldn’t tell at the moment because he was too lost in the darkness of the woman’s mind. She was screaming so loudly that he couldn’t think straight. Images flashing before him. Memories like a picture book that he couldn’t quite keep up with.
”Things are connected. Tied in a tangle. ———Fixing one thing might break something else.”
That was when he looked up at the young boy standing before him. He was here for her as well. He was here to help. ”She doesn’t need your help. She needs mine. Sleep is only a temporary fix.”
The kid looked like he was stuck in his head for a while. And Noel was used to that, it happened a lot with tired people, too. But then he opened his mouth and didn't make much more sense than when he wasn't saying anything. Noel tilted his head, turning the words over in his mind - he wasn't all that great with solving things. He wasn't sure what it meant, to break something. Then again, he was there to fix something. Noel narrowed his eyes at that - how the kid knew he was there to help her sleep was beyond him.
"How do you - who are you?"
Noel glanced past him, at the door, then back to the boy. He didn't seem like a demi-god. He could've been one of Zeus' children that they hadn't learned about just yet, but Noel was sure that he would've sensed that. No, he was something else, and he couldn't put his finger on it.
"Well, how do you know sleep won't help, huh?
How're you gonna help her?"

His blonde hair twisted in the wind, cold and brisk as it rushed against his skin—-skin that shouldn’t belong to him—-he still could not understand how it had happened. How he had become a physical being. In the young boy’s time of need he had come to help and he couldn’t help so he became him. Became Cole. Yet, he was still the spirit of compassion. It was—complicated. He could still read minds. Read into the very soul and sense pain and suffering. He could still ease worries. He could still help and be forgotten with a mere word. Yet, he was physical. He had skin. He bled. Even if he did not need to or want to eat.
Pulling at his long sleeves, he scuffed his boots against the gravel and looked up to the house that he was sitting in front of. Now that they could see him he had learnt it was best not to barge in unannounced. They would get upset with him. Angry. Still, he knew that he had to do something. This one was crying out to him. Screaming for someone to listen. To sympathize. To tell her that it wasn’t her fault.

"She swallowed lies until she sang with darker music. —————-The sound hollowed her.”
It was a typical afternoon, and like he usually tended to be, Noel was bored. He hadn't been summoned for any business in quite a while, and he was getting restless. Of course, he'd had some condescending kid fall asleep in the middle of an exam and chuckled about that for a good ten minutes, but even that didn't preoccupy him for long. To make matters worse, Nat was off on some important call, following after some poor soul who's time had run out. And he felt guilty, all of a sudden - boredom was better than that burden, in the grand scheme of things.
Then there was something - a tug sort of thing, something he couldn't quite explain, that caught his attention. He tilted his head and followed, walked until he felt like he was going in the right direction. Someone was exhausted - likely a severe insomniac by the severity of the feeling. Noel expected an afternoon nap, maybe, but this was something else. As he walked up to the home where he expected it to be coming from, he saw him - a boy about his age, staring at the house. Noel furrowed his brows as he approached - just in time to hear him speaking.
"Sorry, I didn't quite catch...whatever you just said. Uh - do you live here?"

As he walked into the school, Asher made a beeline for the library. He'd never been to a public school campus, and the horror stories he'd heard were enough to keep him away from them. Still in his crisp uniform, he stood out among them, and the visitor's pass around his neck didn't help. He cursed his own school's library for not having what he needed - with all of the funding they had, they could have easily ordered it. But his essay was due in a few days and he had to have more than one physical book as a source. It was a disaster.
Asher kept his head down as he entered the library and went right for the computers. They would likely have a catalog for him to search - but as he wiggled the mouse to bring up the screen, the screen informed him that he needed to put in his student id. He clenched his jaw and glanced around, until he spotted someone that might be willing to help him.
"Excuse me - would you happen to have an id number I could use? I need to look up a book and I can't remember mine."
#i realized that they might not go to the same school since asher goes to private so i hope this works?#c:asher#youxwontxremember

& he really should be mad at how all his comics spilled from a stack in his arms to an array of papers all over the sidewalk. they’re all unorganized. dirty. unorganized. he takes three deep breathes, makes uncomfortable eye contact with the other before he gets on his knees, picking up his comics with feather-like digits. so gentle. honey colored locks fall into his emerald green irises; probably for the better, anyway, he didn’t want to have to face them again after something as embarrassing as this. ❛ sssorry ! my fault… probably should’a watched where i was going.❜
noel shouldn't laugh, but he can't help the chuckle. he'd been minding his own business, coaxing a particularly tired looking girl to sleep. but in his concentration, he'd completely missed the boy walking right at him. why he had a stack of comic books in the library, noel wasn't really sure. but it was clear that he needed help. and he felt kind of guilty for laughing. ❛❛don't sweat it,❜❜ he started, smiling and kneeling down to pluck a few of the books from the ground. ❛❛i think we were both distracted,❜❜ noel admitted, picking up the rest nearest him and adding them to the boy's pile.

Asher gnawed on his lip as he walked through the unfamiliar courtyard, the campus map in his hands. It was obvious that he was lost. Astrid wasn't answering her phone - she was likely sleeping - and the online map didn't help much, either. He was going to have to ask someone. He tapped the shoulder of the nearest person, a skeptical look on his face.

❛❛Excuse me - would you happen to know where the philosophy department is?" ❜❜

waverly drove down the deserted street, the other female on the passenger seat. they’ve been trying to find some kind of sanctuary. a much safer place to sleep rather than this car. she tapped the side of the gun against the steering wheel, her eyes remaining focused on the road. they remained silent, but once she saw the smoke emitting from the car, waverly sat up straighter, murmuring out, “holy fuck, baby don’t do this to me.” she moved to park just behind another car before shutting off the engine. “take your gun out,” she instructed quietly before getting out, shutting the door behind her. the blonde took her machete from her side pocket before walking over to the nearest walker, bringing down the sharp end on its head. after making sure that was the only danger around them, waverly made her way to the front of the car, opening up the hood. “fuck, fuck, fuck,” she cursed, looking away as smoke begin to fill her senses.
peyton was hot and tired, her eyes itchy from the dust that seemed to linger on everything. after the outbreak, everything felt slower, quieter, scarier. the fact that the car worked at all was still a miracle. it seemed as if anything with a motor shouldn't have been working. so the puttering and smoking wasn't that much of a surprise - though it made her heart pound in her chest. it was terrifying, because it meant that they would have to go out there, and possibly that they'd have to walk their way from place to place, if the car couldn't be fixed. “o-okay”, peyton murmured, nodding as she went for the gun. she knew how to use it, waverly had made sure of that - but she still hadn't had to fire it. though there wasn't much room for hesitation, for second guessing the use of weapons, anymore. that didn't mean that she didn't flinch when waverly took the walker's head off. but she stood there beside the woman with her chin up, watching for any movement. “does it look that bad? can you fix it?”

"no, no, don’t apologize, baby," she quickly said, taking a step closer to her, her arms finding their way around her waist. “i made a promise and i didn’t follow through, i should be the one saying sorry.”
"i can try to get out of it, you know? that’s definitely nothing compared to what i promised you. i won’t get in trouble for it.”
❛❛okay…❜❜ peyton started, smiling at the gentle arms around her waist. she reached up to wrap her own around alexis' neck, pressing a kiss to her cheek. ❛❛yeah, i know. i just don't want you to get in trouble. but - if you can get out of it, i'd be glad to have the extra time with you. maybe we can have date night?❜❜
