fight club (1999) is basically an adaptation of jekyll and hyde if he was so in denial that he blocked out the fact that he was edward hyde and everyone knew he was edward hyde. bottoms (2023) is basically an adaptation of fight club if tyler and the narrator really were different people and they were both lesbians. by this logic, bottoms (2023) is the best jekyll and hyde adaptation

that ramble earlier made me want to write an essay on guilt and shame in jekyll and hyde

I guess I'm neutral on the whole "jekyll and hyde are the same person" thing because I think it can be done masterfully both ways. plus, I don't think only one has to be true. to me, hyde is very much a part of jekyll and has been from the moment jekyll first repressed his desires. hyde is that urge, that temptation to throw away his successful life and indulge in sin, and jekyll is the restraint that prevents him from giving into that. henry jekyll, at his core, is a man divided by conflicting desires. sometimes you can become so conflicted that your sense of self feels like it is literally split into two (I think. I hope this is not just me because that'd be embarrassing). what henry jekyll does is say "fuck all that, I don't want to have inner conflict, it'd be so much easier if I was literally two people with conflicting values" and voila except it doesnt really work because henry jekyll still HAS conflicting values. now he just has edward hyde who only holds the desires and impulses without the restraint or moral care to not give into them. so yes, I think that they're the same person, but they're also different people who behave differently and think differently because of that key aspect, hyde does not have morality or care. hyde only ever really seems to care about what happens to him if it threatens his life (because he loves living so much) or if he has a bought of paranoia and starts fearing he will be caught (which is also because being caught is a threat to his life, and he loves living so much). he comes to resent his life as jekyll because it represents those feelings of guilt and shame about indulging in sin. like yes, he feels fine having gotten into a fight just now, but he knows that in a day he'll be hit with a wave of discomfort and guilt when he regains his morals. jekyll also becomes a threat to hydes life because of that morality - a step too far will result in his own dismissal of that previous love for life, because the fear of being shamed by society for his actions as hyde is too much for jekyll. he could shut hyde away, or, the more alluring option, he could become hyde once again to escape those cares about society and wrongdoing and whatnot. there's also the fact that, since jekyll is ashamed of his own desires that hyde, he makes an effort to consciously separate those actions from himself. as someone who dissociates a lot, it can be hard to even believe that you've done some things while in certain states to the point where it makes more sense to you to completely separate that. it brings a sense of comfort to look at an action you disagree with and know "it wasn't the me that I am right now that did that, it was....okay well it was "me" but in a different way", and there is a choice whether or not to take responsibility for it. henry jekyll is allergic to responsibility so he just represses represses and represses.

hyde was separated to relieve the need to repress. if hyde holds all of those desires, then jekyll does not need to worry about them. however, the sad truth is that hyde just becomes another urge to resist and another aspect of jekyll that he needs to repress. he is doomed by himself. but yeah I think I got off topic? hit the like and subscribe button if you like dissociation boys perspective on 1886 short story

Much has been said about S1-2 Jesse's colorful, oversized, multi-layered, wannabe-street-thug style, and his s4-5 shaved head, emo-badass, drug lord henchman look.  (Both excellent aesthetics, mind!  Both very tasty, in different ways.)  

HOWEVER, I submit - we don't talk enough about his brief, transitional gangsta-grandma phase in between.  

Like, I love the thematic idea that his clothes are a little all over the place in early s3 because that's also kind of where he is, mentally.  Trying to figure out who he's supposed to be - the silly, goofy Jesse of earlier seasons is gone for good at this point, and he's living out all his self-loathing "bad guy" fantasies but his heart isn't really in it.  

But truly, like... the batshit insane juxtaposition of this giant dollar sign T-shirt with the oatmeal-colored, old lady cardigan?  Chef's kiss.  I know in my heart there's a deleted scene out there somewhere of dead-eyed, clinically depressed Jesse Pinkman browsing the racks at Dress Barn to find that sweater in just the right shade of beige, and I will forever be a little sad we didn't get to see it.

I’ve been obsessed w it for quite a while and I’ve had this piece stuck in my head for close upon a year now…while I’m not ssuuupeer satisfied w how it came out, I would love to draw it again. jekyll and hyders of tumblr I need your recommendations. I need more media with that duality of man kind of character. a very loose Jekyll and Hyde adaptation. I need more fight club. I need more breaking bad. I need more of people adopting another personality to live out their sinful desires and being consumed by it. I need more people traumatised as a child so much that their brain does that last step for them. I need duality I need stage personas and alter egos and systems and amnesia and dissociation and confusion and doppelgangers and physical transformations and slow burn mental metamorphosis. I need mysteries and I need media that dangle duality in front of me like fish bait. they don't need to be good vs bad (because that's not even jekyll and hyde but whatever) just look at saul goodman and jimmy mcgill. they're both assholes. but they're my assholes. I like them a lot. this is my collection. I need more before I die right now
