One rainy day in December I was having a pretty rough day at work, so I decided to take a break and chill by the windows at the back. Looked out to see this stunning rainbow peeking at me through the clouds. I know this looks super edited -- but it isn't, this isn't a filter (though I notched up the brightness and color a tiny bit) -- but this is how gorgeous it looked & it made me feel so warm and happy. Last year my feet wandered into this beautifully strange snowy city with two suitcases full of winter clothes that barely kept me warm. I uprooted myself from Dhaka just when I had started to feel at home; after all, complacency terrifies me, and as a restless person I am always in search of the next big thing. So here I was exploring a familiar city in all the unfamiliar ways; househunting, jobhunting, grad school, dating, adult-life decisions (mostly terrible ones), finding the warmth of friendship in old ones and new ones, all in the pursuit of my dreams. I wandered city to city, streets to streets, people to people; learning, growing, failing, crying, hustling, dreaming, and falling in love with life a little harder each day. My carefully curated social media will tell you how much fun I’ve had this past year living my dreams, but there’s also so much BTS where life beat me up so hard that I gave up on myself on too many nights. Alhamdulillah life has given me everything that I’ve prayed for -- but not before it made me work my butt off, shed literal sweat, blood, and tears, and never did it give me the things I thought I needed when I needed them. Everything worked out in its own time, in its own pace, but it always did work out. If I were to describe the past decade in one word I'd choose 'community.' I thrived because family and friends around the world had my back; hyping me up, pep-talking me, giving me tough love, real love, honest love, all kinds of love. Everyone knows I am a hazard to myself when I am left alone to contemplate the abyss of my existence, so wherever I have gone, I've found myself surrounded by a community full of support. I am so so grateful for this life and everything that I’ve been blessed with. The word ‘settle’ unsettles me. When I am asked to: Settle down somewhere with someone for something -- What I hear is: Stop. Slow down. Stay there. I think of settle as stagnant, and I understand That it is not really the way of the word But hear me out -- The word settle literally means ‘to resolve’ or ‘to come to an agreement’ When I hear that, I think: Compromise. Expect less. Accept what’s given. It makes me feel like my life has run its course -- Like the race is over even before it really began. But my world is a kaleidoscope -- Each time I look in through a new light, there's a new color, a new me I am ever-evolving, ever-learning, A being of curiosity, and wonder, and magic I am an explorer of the high seas and the low tides A wayfarer consumed with wanderlust It is the thrill that keeps me alive.
