I've done some little changes on the prologue since at the time I haven't a clear idea of what actually happens in that part that I'm currently writing.

Butthead is definitely a repressed gay teen, I refuse to see him as anything else.

It’s clear that he not only struggles with some type of internalized homophobia but also he’s got this macho complex, which leads him to believe that having romantic feelings is being a “wuss” and that love is only when you feel sexually attracted to women which comes off as such a cope.

It’s interesting that between him and Beavis, Beavis is the only one who has felt genuine romantic desire towards women while Butthead’s desire for women is based on physical appearance and sex appeal. Which is what most of society tells boys that they have to feel ( due to women being so over sexualized but that’s another can of worms ).

In Butthead’s case, his fantasies about women and his desire to “score” with one might be a case of compulsory heterosexuality. It would make sense for the times that he grew up in, as the 90s did not look upon homosexuality very favorably especially when it came to parents who might have gay children as having a gay child was framed as the parents “failure”. As well as in schools at the time, where being called “gay” was seen as an insult among peers.

There is also the fact that he and Beavis come from a small, most likely conservative, town in the south where the LGBT community as a whole would be frowned upon.

There are multiple instances where Butthead is uncomfortable and almost disgusted at the thought of being gay and that kind of thinking just doesn’t come from nowhere. His reactions to such instances come off as very telling to me, for example in the episode “Refuse Service” from 2022 series, Butthead reacts so strongly when Beavis insinuates that he could let Butthead “handle it” in reference to his arousal.

Immediately Butthead attacks Beavis and yells at him to I assume never say that again ( what we can hear is him saying “Don’t you ever!” ) which comes off as a almost panicked reaction that nobody actually comfortable in their sexuality would have.

There is also that scene in the 2022 series, where Butthead awakes from a dream, realizes that he had been holding Beavis and stroking his hair the whole time he’s been asleep and then his eyes widen in panic as he pushes himself and Beavis away. Which again, is a telling reaction to me.

Don’t even get me started on Do the Universe. That whole sequence where they fight and basically “break up” their friendship, where Butthead actually starts to look sad combined with the romantic breakup ballad playing the whole time. Come on!

A take I have on that is that Butthead wasn’t actually jealous of Serena in that he wanted to be the one to be with her, but he was actually jealous that Beavis was experiencing strong feelings for someone that was not him. Which is why he chose to berate Beavis for it. Again, repressed gay teen, it’s all a defense mechanism and coping strategy.

It’s clear that Butthead has a lot of emotional walls put up and his whole attitude might be his own way of coping with his internal struggles. Of course he has to be the cool guy who gets all the babes because if he’s not, if he doesn’t actually want chicks the way that he thinks he does, then he would feel like there is something wrong with him.

Does Butthead know it’s 2025? Does he knows it’s legal? Probably, I think he’s too used to his own mindset by this point and anything that might’ve happened in his upbringing to cause him to continue to think this way, to really allow himself to realize that though.

I hope he finally comes out of the closet in the new season ( joking, but also so serious - someone tell this kid it’s okay to be gay )
