The Cool Kids had an 80s vibe that grabbed my attention. It wasn’t until “The Bake Sale” EP dropped on iTunes that nudged me to listen to more of their stuff. Mostly known for their MySpace popularity and live shows, the Cool Kids paying homage to the 80s is so cool. Their sound is so thought-provoking and progressive. . . The 808s and egotistical lyrics makes the EP fun to listen to. The Chicago based duo’s sound reminds of a hardcore LL Cool J record with a touch of a Rick Rubin production. There’s no list without Aaliyah. I enjoyed her music because she was comfortable in her own skin and had a glowing personality. Every song, whether uptempo or slow had sass, not to mention the glorious production from Timbaland and Missy. Aaliyah was the connection between hip hop and electronica, and I loved that she didn’t conform to a sound; she made it her own. . . I low key loved dancing to her music while cleaning up (using the broom as my microphone) or holding a concert while driving as the other drivers next to me looked on like I was crazy! 😜😝 . . Favorite tracks: “Rock the Boat”, “More Than A Woman”, and “I Care 4 U”. . . Ah Milli-on is a new character I created a couple of months back for the concept “We Need A Resolution”, which is currently in outline. I wanted Ah Milli-on to favor Aaliyah with touches of what I imagine her personality to be. I look forward to finishing the outline and drafting the story. . . Listening to “Dare Iz A Darkside” by Redman reminds me of the bad guy Tobias Whale on Black Lightning. Tobias isn’t a traditional “villain”, he’s a bad guy with something to prove because maybe he was bullied as kid by the streets he now rules over. . . “Dare Iz A Darkside” is a good resource when thinking about the bad guy or girl in your story. The beats slam hard and the lyrics, well, it’s obvious Redman was in a dark place. It’s hard to deny Redman is a solid lyricist with witty punchlines, which is the reason why I’m including him in my black history dedication. . . I used the character Otus Wise in this variant because he’s headed towards a dark place in the story “4 Tales of Gershon.” I took a pause on writing the second half of the 4 Tales to really dive into the characters and get them mentally ready for what’s ahead in the story. . . “Rockafella” is one of my favorite tracks on the album. It sounds a little familiar to Dr. Dre’s “Nuthin But A G Thang” as both used the same sample, but the way Redman delivers makes him the better lyricist in my opinion. I’m always entertained when listening to a Redman album and “Dare Iz A Darkside” is an all time favorite. . . Cheers to a beautiful culture and community. Public Enemy Power to the People and the Beats . . I usually don’t promote listening to compilations or greatest hits as an introduction to an artist or group. It’s better to listen to the studio albums to get to know the artists and their body of work. . . Public Enemy is such a timeless group. The culture around their sound is a combination of disruption and truth. The beats are hardcore and hypnotic. The lyrics are very visual and detailed, it’s like listening to a well thought out character-plot driven action film, which is rare in my opinion. . . The greatest hits highlights theme and power, it’s pretty solid, but if you have time, money, or a music streaming subscription, I’d recommend time traveling back to ‘87 through their first album, Yo! Bum Rush the Show. . . My favorite songs are You’re Gonna Get Yours and Raise the Roof. . . When I was a student at Howard University, three of my favorite subjects were African Diaspora I, II, and Civil Rights. In grade school I gained a sprinkle of Black history but at @howard1867 my eyes were opened to a wealth of knowledge. . This knowledge changed my life, my perception of the world, how to love myself, love not judge people, and to appreciate socially conscious and political hip hop. . I researched groups and artists my sister listened to in the 80s and early 90s. I studied their lyrics, references, production, and personal stories. . . From my favorite albums I began drafting the series “4 Tales of Gershon,” which is loosely based on the diaspora and inspired by some of the music I listen to from the 80s to present day. . .
