Future directions

Hi guys, thanks for sticking around again, this post is just self-commentary about my future both here and outside of this community. Starting with outside of here.

I'm currently applying to the United States Airforce Academy (USAFA) and have been training for months since July 2024. Funnily enough, this community is probably a reason as to why I discovered the academy. Will I be flying planes? Yes. Will I end up like CharlesCalvin? Maybe. I'm not planning to reveal much personal information so this is about the most you all are getting.

Anyways onto my account.

This account is not going to see much more activity. I was thinking about perhaps having anniversary artworks or a second album but to be real here, The "AVSH" album killed my time management habits and my GPA for this semester. I cant let this happen again.

Again, the occasional doodle is possible but quality large artworks is going to be exceptionally rare. Anyways, thanks for sticking around for the small update.

Goodbye THSC!

Hi guys, I know I've said that this will just be a break and that I'll come back later but I'm very burned out still even though it's been over a month since A Very Sovatic Holiday Album. I've thought about this for a long time and I've decided that my time is better spent for real life priorities, so this will likely be a permanent leave. That being said, I still really respect all of you in the THSC community and artists who still pump out work just out of passion, you have a true drive for what you love and you should be proud of that. Thank you to those who have stuck around even during my bleak hiatuses as well.

I remember becoming interested in THSC again back in June 2024 and quickly got hooked into the community's AUs, the intricate storylines and characters, and the art. I've been making thsc artwork since then, but I've started sharing them publicly online since around August 2024 and the rest has been documented online through my account. It's been a nice adventure and nibble in the community, but I've had a bit too much. Does this mean I'll never post again? Probably, I might drop a sketch or update or two once in a while, but don't expect album level activity lol, never again. There will likely be a 1 year anniversary for the A Very Sovatic Holiday Album however later this year with a few artworks, after that I'll go radio silent again.

PART 2 BTS Of My Artworks (December-February)

Part 1!

December

At this point in late November-mid December I was almost out of steam and motivation to finish the A Very Sovatic Holiday Album. A ton of expected artworks were postponed or cancelled, and nothing was made in this period. The album took up a significant portion of my freetime and starting in November I was considering abandoning the project.

Eves

The "Eves" artpiece was originally meant to take place in a booth in a bar with hardwood floors to the left instead of a window. The interior was meant to be similar to the Tavern at the beginning of the Valiant Hero ending in Completing the Mission but with green cushions and a TV screen showing football. Time constraints led to that idea being mostly cut (preserving the table layout, perspective, and Dave, Rupert, and Johnny).

There really wasn't a annoying thing in this the paint as everything was relatively simple enough. The only thing that gave mild trouble were the glass cups and beer glass as I'm not good at glass reflections. There was supposed to be a mobile phone on the table from Dave with text messages hosting a couple easter eggs but it looked terrible when I painted it in so it was covered. Originally Dave was supposed to have a police cap, but to make it a bit more Christmassy I gave him a Santa hat instead. (see above) A detail I really liked was the reflection of Rupert, his drink, and the light onto the window at the left.

I was admittedly, very surprised this artwork came out fine on time on Christmas Eve and it became one of the most popular artworks I made here despite being hastily made.

"A Very Stickmin Holiday" Fiasco

(Originally called: "Underneath The Christmas Tree" and "A Very Stickmin Christmas")

The A Very Sovatic Holiday artpiece began in development right after Eves, but was much more complicated. I had the idea of having a main artpiece similar to Eves with one or two polaroids as fun side pieces. However the main painting was scrapped very early in development as it was too complicated to complete fully, and the first polaroid made was also scrapped as I really didn't like how I shade and composed everything.

The main artwork was meant to have Hubert shocked over Henry spilling boiling hot sugar over the Christmas tree on Christmas morning, causing it to ignite on fire. Ellie watches while Charles tries to get water. Reg and RHM watch secretly from a opened window near the back. It was meant to be chaotic, funny, and very Christmassy and a parody of Home Alone movies to an extent. The sketch of Hubert surprised is the only thing that survives of it.

I vaguely got the idea of the polaroids based off the 1989 album polaroids from Taylor Swift. The initials H.G stand for Hubert Galeforce, the person who is keeping track of his history with his family over the years.

The original polaroid was meant to be a vintage photo of Hubert being pied by Charles during Christmas eve during a family visit. This original polaroid is half-completed and is the second image above.

The second original polaroid wasn't even started and I couldn't remember what the concept was but it was likely recycled to form the second polaroid in the finalized post (see fireplace polaroid below).

The 2 polaroids that would eventually become the actual artworks for the "A Very Sovatic Holiday" single were under development starting on December 30th to December 31st midnight.

The "waterfall" polaroid began first and took 5 hours to complete and is also one of my favorite things I made last year. It's a personal callback to the time I went to Niagra falls that summer as well, and the whole polaroid came together exactly how I wanted. This isn't Christmas themed at all and it's meant to create a contrast that love and happiness can exist all year, whether it's sunny, raining, freezing, or cloudy.

The "fireplace" polaroid began later that night and was finished at after midnight (roughly 4 hours). It was a bit more complicated than expected and it's composition was changed a few times very early in development, but I'm also very happy with how it turned out. I initially wanted Hubert to be looking at the camera while Charles was sleeping in his lap with the gifts next to him, but I changed it as it might've been a bit too boring. I forgot to add the gifts at the very end underneath the tree but I was SO tired and I needed sleep. I really like how the bricks and carpet turned out, it feels very cozy. In hindsight Charles should be much more grown in 2009 and Hubert should be showing a mustache, but forgot to include t in.

Snowglow (Originally called "Snowed In" and "Blizzard")

Snowglow was the only easy and simple artwork to make in the album. I had this artpiece in mind since October and was originally going to release it on December 7th, but the Lead single and Thanksgiving single cancellations ultimately pushed this back by almost a month. Original sketches had Burt in the background of a path of snow looking at the camera holding a umbrella with a line of trees to his right. This was scrapped and Snowglow went through several different versions for about 2 hours as I tried to find a decent composition. I began to favor the design (see above) more and it was settled on pretty quickly. The footprint line was initially meant to extend much further to beyond the screen but I got tired of painting in each individual footprint so I faded it out.

I began this artwork right after posting "A Very Sovatic Holiday" and it was finished 2 hours later.

The art (first image) shows the finished artwork with the original sketch in a layer over it showing where the footprint path was going to be. The second image was one of the many images I used for inspiration. This artwork was also inspired by icy solar system moons such as Europa, Enceladus, Dione, and Triton in Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune.

A Polaroid of Our Mission (Cancelled)

Alright this was a weird one. This one was planned in November 20th and was originally meant to be posted on December 22nd, but plans fell through so it got pushed to after Snowglow then to after New Year's Day 🍾, then it was cancelled altogether since I was SUPER done with this project mentally. It was a polaroid (similiar to the A Very Stickmin Holiday polaroids) with triple threat boarding a helicopter in a desert sunset which took place in 2021, after completing the mission. No sketches or digitalized paintings were made.

I teased this a few times in my previous posts in case I had the time to make it. Plans didnt happen. The blue highlights were references to this artpost.

January

New Year's Day Fiasco (Originally called "The Beginning and the End")

One last fiasco to cap off the album, New Year's Day was started right after Snowglow was finished, but was delayed over and over due to burnout.

The original concept was made back in September, with (Here's an entry from a old document with all the artworks in the album) "Dave Panpa holding a photo of him, johnny, and rupert smiling. He is on one knee and has a tear coming out of one eye while looking off into the distance with green lighting casted on his face. He is laying on a green tiled floor with photos of younger him scattered around him." This was meant to be a transitional artwork into the next album (which got cancelled) so after it was shelved I had to make a different concept.

The second concept was that there'd be 5 different frames, with the first 3 being "3...2...1...." countdown to the main countdown to 2025. The last 2 were paintings of the THSC members all celebrating together as it hit 2025. I only managed to complete half of the first image, and the rest of scrapped. The first image has 2 glasses of wine on a black marble table with a reflection of a toppat member in the bottom left. (see first screenshot)

As a desperate last minute attempt to just put something out, I used stick figures instead of my usual humanoid bodies and half-assed the coloring and detailing. I'm not too happy that I did that but it was January 13th and I wanted the album to be over with so badly as it was the reason why my workload and motivation has tanked for the past few months.

Also Hubert is missing his arms so I added their shadows to hope yall didnt notice 😭.

This was a small sketch of RHM in human form. I gave up as the shading and anatomy were messed up and I didnt have the energy to finish this.

February

Post-A Very Sovatic Holiday and I was completely burned out with anything digital art. I recently regained some energy to make a small sketch of Ellie Rose for Valentines Day. I didnt finish it but I never had a intention on posting it.

Edits: Added new entries (completely forgot about them), added more details and fixed small mistakes.

You might be wondering why a ton of this album is based around Charles-Hubert...If I ever get around to make another album again you'll see why.

Am I going to make any artwork anytime soon? Probably not, at least not THSC related (I'm really burned out). See you around!

PART 1 BTS Of My Artworks (August-November)

Hi guys, here are some WIP, Behind the scenes, and scrapped screenshots of artwork I made between August-November 2024. Enjoy!

August

I had lots of files which showed Undutied Hubert in different stages of WIP but most of them are gone. This is the only WIP image of the artwork I still have which does not have his cap or the surrounding leaves. I remember starting this on August 20th and it was very relaxing to make.

September

September was a really weird month art-wise since I was transitioning away from the early simpler "one character" portraits into the A Very Sovatic Holiday Album planning.

The screenshot above was meant to be a parody of "Telephone" by Lady Gaga and Beyonce. My idea was that the Toppat Clan has just killed the government base, triple threat, and the police force in a small diner and decided to break out into a dance number over their cartoon corpses as like a victory dance or something. I entrained this thought for about 2 weeks before it became too complicated to make and was scrapped in mid September.

The "He Was Captured" Artwork was a mess to make but even though the artstyle hasn't aged too well and is a bit amateurish, is something I am still very proud of as it was a big jump in ambition and scale (literally) which helped establish the A Very Sovatic Holiday Album later on. This was very hard to transport into Tumblr as the file size even as a PNG was enormous, roughly 400 MB. This got condensed an enormous amount when posted, so I made a separate post for close ups to appreciate the smaller details more.

This artwork was meant to be a much larger project, almost comic-book like. I don't want to spoil it since I'm still thinking about remaking this later on.

October

At Last I See The Light

The "At Last I See The Light" artpiece was the only major thing made around this time and is still one of my favorite artworks I've made last year. I based it off a scene in the Disney movie Tangled, where Eugene and Rapunzel are alone in a wooden boat romantically spectating a lantern ceremony. I thought it would've been great for Ellie and Henry as Toppat leaders. This was also the first artpiece I made with a drawing tablet, which is why it's artstyle is a little different compared to the ones in September and August.

More about the artstyle... my main inspiration around August-October was Lazydeer/Mars who had a certain way of shading and shadowing spheres (heads) of THSC characters where it'd be sharp color lines instead of the gradients I'd do nowadays. At Last I See The Light is one of my last artworks to have this "blocky" style of shading, you can see it on the heads of Henry and Ellie.

Early on I imagined that there was a white stone bridge in the background similar to a scene in Mulan 2 with rose bushes off to the right side, but this never really materialized.

There aren't any significant differences in early sketches and this. Ellie's dress is a fair bit different and she was initially meant to wear a tophat, but this got changed. The artwork was initially meant to be posted on September 25th as a late Summer/early Autumn kickstart but it got delayed to early October.

November

Midnight (Originally called "Candy")

The Midnight artwork was the messiest installment to plan and create in the A Very Sovatic Holiday Album as although I had a clear image of the theme ever since early September, it was hard to pinpoint exact details in the composition and environment. Because of this, at least 4 different versions were made until around October 20th when the final design was chosen. The delay and complication of Midnights led to the delay and cancellation of the Lead Single and Thanksgiving Single (see later on).

All images above are posted in order of creation.

The first sketch was meant to be Hubert Galeforce giving out candy to Charles on a porch at night. In this sketch I had Dave Panpa and Rupert Price in mind. At this point it was called "Candy".

The second sketch had Hubert watching helplessly as triple threat horse played in the streets after dark during Halloween. Ellie was dressed as a stop sign, Charles was driving the cart, and Henry had a diamond while riding on the cart.

The third version had Henry steal a whole bowl of candy while Hubert was intentionally distracted by Charles and Ellie on a person's porch. I had this sketch digitalized 2 weeks before Halloween before deciding that it wasn't good. This sketch was where Henry's diamond custom came from.

The FINAL version had Hubert covering Triple Threat from the rain in the streets of New York during a very late night Halloween trip. Initially many more details were meant to be included such as a fire escape ladder and a large sign saying "Fredrickson's Candy" in reference to the mayor, Gene Fredrickson, but time constraints cut them out last time. I was initially going to post this at 4 PM October 31st but it got pushed to November 1st.

The artstyle here is much more "matured" compared to previous ones such as At Last I See The Light and He Was Captured, being more finely blended and pillow-like compared to the harsher lines I used earlier on. I do find it funny that I found out that the way I did art digitally was kind of weird, as I would never use solid outlines for my art expect for when sketching.

Autumn 🍂🍁(Originally called "Orange")

The Autumn artwork was much simpler to think through. I had it's composition and early sketches figured out since late September/October. The main changes were that Rupert and Dave are supposed to be on a road that curves to the left side of the image and the background is supposed to be orange hills with a blue river running at the right side of the image. Time constraints led to a simplification of the background. I used to have a paper full of sketches of the first 4 artworks in the album but I can't find where it is.

Orange (Not to be confused with Autumn 🍂🍁)

This was a cancelled artpiece where Hubert and (teenage) Quentin Alablaster was operating a helicopter with Charles looking out a side door to view the blue sky and orange/red trees below in Autumn. Cancelled because of Midnight/Lead Single/Thanksgiving single situation. This artpiece was originally meant to be in mid-November in place of Autumn 🍂🍁, but it was replaced by Autumn 🍂🍁 as I wanted to have more characters represented in the album at this point than just Charles and Hubert. Although I had a clear concept and image of this, it was never started so no sketches or digitalized painting exist.

A Very Sovatic Holiday's Lead Single (Firewood, Campfire, Cabin, etc)

Similarly to Midnights, the lead single's composition and subject matter was also very hard to pinpoint and think through. I made many sketches trying to get a good idea of what the artwork might look like but none stuck expect for the finalized concept (see above)

Here are 2 screenshots of the scrapped lead single of the album which I haven't named yet (though I've thought of names such as Cabin, Me and Dad, Campfire, etc. ). This was originally meant to be released on November 4th but the Midnights artwork became a huge mess to deal with that this got pushed back to late November. It eventually became completely scrapped as I ran out of motivation to finish this from schoolwork and the campfire lighting was too complicated to figure out so yeah. I really like this artwork still though so I might remake this along with Autumn later on.

Thanksgiving Single: Gold, Champagne & Glory (Originally called "Wine & Turkey")

The Thanksgiving single also was a huge headache to make (titled "Gold, Champagne, and Glory") as it had the opposite problem of Midnights and the lead single. The concept and image of the final product was very clear for months ever since August (yes AUGUST) but when it came time to start sketching and digitally painting it, it was a nightmare as the perspective and colors never seemed right.

The artwork was meant to be from a worm's eye perspective looking up to see RHM and Reg enjoying a Thanksgiving dinner with the toppat elites. Thomas Chestershire was meant to be a waiter in the far left delivering more wine.

The digitalized artwork above only shows Right Hand Man and the left half of Reginald Copperbottom's head but Thomas Chestershire and all the other elite toppat members were also meant to be there. The sketch screenshot was the top half of Reg's tophat and Thomas Chestershire delivering Champagne.

The delay and eventual cancelling of both the lead single and the thanksgiving single tanked my motivation for the album and made me want to give up, which caused a month long absence between November and December.

That's all for August-November. There is much more I'm not able to cover as much of the sketches and plans were lost.

Hi guys, I don't have the energy or time to make a nice artpiece like I did in December but I really wanted to end this album off with a New Years related artpiece. I decided to go with stick figures to save time and to be more similar to the canon The Henry Stickmin Canon artstyle by Puffballs. This is one of the very rare times I draw in stick figures for "official" art, so this is a bit of a special one.

I hope 2025 has been going well for ya! In this album's 1 year anniversaries I'll probably post some behind the scenes artworks.

2024 in Review

2024 has been one of the best years for me so far, and it's when I got really into Henry Stickmin beginning in June. I made some stickmin related artworks before August but their kept off platform. I was also pretty familiar with digital art before this, but didn't use it regularly.

That being said, I'm proud to say that I've really improved over the past few months, and you can see the experimenty art styles I was switching back and fourth to between August-October until settling into what I have now in November. Waiting to see for what next year brings.

Also the collage is very sloppy I didn't know how to organize it. ;-;

Not all of the album artworks are on here as I'm saving them for the album recap.
