once, on a mountain, they confessed to one another: what makes them them is that they would leave a dead man behind to save their own lives.
then, in a train tunnel about to face the end of the world, there is a nod. an agreement struck deep and true and together. this time, they are the only ones who can do the job because they know they may die but it's an easy choice, for them.
hardison tells parker in that tunnel (and later, eliot once they are all curled around each other under sheets and the weight of what could have been) that she can't do that again, she can't. he can't. hardison needs them.
but eliot and parker are who they are because they can make the call. and they would. any and every time. eliot knows this for sure. because for all your intentions, you can only make the promise to be there for one person at a time when push comes to shove. that parker would make the same choice as him is why he loves her and why she loves him. because they alone would break their oath (that they change together) so that the man they both love—and the world he treasures—may yet live.

The Rundown Job was really the OT3 episode, uh?
I knew they worked well together, that's been obvious for a while. But in an episode of just them, it really hits how in sinc they are.
Hardison and Eliot doing their little handshake after watching Parker do her acrobat thing through a lazer grid.
Tumblr media
Eliot's first concern being to get Hardison and Parker to safety. Them refusing to let Eliot go up against a terrorist attack. Parker's line about how they change together, for better or worse.
Tumblr media
Eliot not being scared of the terrorists attack because he has Hardison and Parker on his side and he believes in them more than anything.
Also when Eliot put his hand on the back of Hardison's neck and looked into his eyes? That was so intimate. The tension was serious with undertones of sexual. It had the same tension as Parker diffusing the bomb.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The silent communication. The celebrating each other's victories.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eliot throwing down the crutch in favor of leaning on his partners.

I'm sure other stuff I missed, it being only my first watch through and all. But that's the stuff that stood out the most to me.

There’s a degree to which the stunts in mission impossible movies are interchangeable, like you could swap around their order between films and I don’t think it would disrupt the narrative too much. Ethan hanging off a plane in the opening scene of Rogue Nation could easily go in another film for example. But the Sevastopol sequence feels like it can only ever be in Final Reckoning because it represents the culmination of all of Ethan’s guilts and fears and self-loathing. A sunken submarine at the bottom of the ocean is the physical embodiment of his mind state - he is trapped entirely alone with his guilt, haunted by the people he feels responsible for killing, slowly drowning. He escapes the submarine but only through excruciating pain and death, naked and alone. And I think Ethan believes he deserves it, that it’s some penance to pay. I remember McQuarrie saying in the Empire spoilercast for FR that originally the scene of Ethan dying in the arctic was intercut with Luther dying, so that “as Ethan dies he’s thinking of the death of his friend” and I think that further drives home the fact that Ethan feels he has to die in order to make up for everyone he loves dying. Like Briggs said to Ethan, who is openly weeping during their conversation: “Sorry about your friend. Then again, you’re used to losing them.”

i fear i'm never gonna over ghost protocol benji, bless his heart. baby's first field mission. literally just so happy to be there. "i passed the field exam!" him and his big ass face on the camera in the hallway (i think that was gp). telling ethan comms are breached at like the worst possible moment. literally sending ethan to go scale the burj khalifa and having full faith he could do it unscathed. him being happy that he changed the numbers on the doors. benji apparently getting along with julia. and then he kills a man. i mourn this version of benji where nothing irrevocably scarring has happened to him. yet. he's literally just happy to be there oh my god i love him so much

If your fic is 1000 words long, you can’t tag it slow burn. It’s not slow burn. That is a matchstick. And this is my personal bias here but if those motherfuckers you’re writing experience significant forward momentum in their relationship in under 5k words, then that is just a regular old burn. Slow burn should be borderline intolerable and a mistake to start reading at 2 in the morning.

parker died last in the long goodbye job and I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone talk about it
we’ve already talked about how eliot has to die first (or he’ll die thrice)
but I think there’s something truly tragic about parker being the one to die last. parker, who always was alone in the world, who had loss over loss, betrayal after betrayal, for years and years until she finally found a family
she found people that loved her for who she was. she found two people that she fell in love with, the two people that loved her back with everything they had
one of them, she dropped down an elevator shaft and had to drag back to relative safety. the other she pulled close to her after he was shot through the chest
she saw both of them fade, one after the other, and then she was alone, bleeding out, in the back of the van
waiting to join them in the dark

Netflix has saved multiple shows in the past, let’s work to add Dead Boy Detectives onto that list, a simple rewatch of show we enjoy, plus adding new viewers in the days up to and after the watch party. Before the show was canceled, it was a growth in views due to these watch parties, let’s make it bigger. Let’s make it trend, we have seen other fandoms do the same, we can do it!
TELL YOUR FRIENDS,
TELL STRANGERS,
MAKE EDITS,
MAKE ART FOR THE SHOW,
MAKE IT TREND.
