“The arrival of the Portuguese in Japan in 1543 gave rise to a commercial and cultural exchange that was recorded in these two pairs of screens: the curiosity and festive atmosphere aroused by the arrival of the black ship of the namban jin (the barbarians from the south, as the Portuguese were called) in the port of Nagasaki.
The great detail used to capture the ships, the description of their valuable cargo and the attention given to the Portuguese merchants and the Jesuit missionaries that acompanied them makes these pieces a unique historical and visual document about the relations between Portugal and Japan.”

Custódia de Belém, Gil Vicente
Gil Vicente (c.1465-1536), Portugal's pioneering playwright and royal goldsmith, crafted the Custódia de Belém (1506) for King Manuel I. Made from African gold brought by Vasco da Gama, it fuses Gothic design with Manueline symbols. A landmark of Renaissance art, it's now in Lisbon's National Museum of Ancient Art.
