Illustrated this piece called ‘Kraken’ inspired by sea monsters born from old Nordic sailors’ imaginations. I find it intriguing how through the ages, we have intuitively externalised the fear of the unknown and poured it out into objects or creatures that can be physically seen, manoeuvred and conquered. Mythology and the imagination are almost essential to our collective emotional sensibilities as a race. Stories help us survive. We see this idea applied across disciplines too; when we are drawn into defining a problem statement, asking the right question, refining the intention, always articulating finer and better, whatever it is we grapple with in this messy, often fuzzy and chaotic, largely unresolved world. Technical difficulties 🥲 I struggled with this piece and sat on it for quite some time before deciding to call it. I conceived it as a more pastel-y and less saturated colour palette. Was running out of patience and paint by the time I was done. The paper began to warp a bit and I did not wanna risk adding on another layer. My palette got pretty muddy too and after a point I was just noodling around, trying out variations of the same thing. However, the good (and bad) thing about gouache is you’re never fully done until you say you are. We’ll see if we wanna return to it another day. Illustrated a piece called ‘System’ penned by the Hindi poet Vinod Kumar Shukla. Translated to English this reads: Being civil in the name of civilization, people had grown excessively civil. Formal, too. All the politeness had given them a permanent stoop. Everybody was walking on the street dressed in crisp, clean clothes, head bent. The policemen kept a watch on how bent the people walked. They also kept a tab on the formality. If one ran into a loved one on the road, they let out their laughs sparingly. Sparing laughter, something akin to an extended smile, sometimes extending beyond the face as well. If the teeth were white and bright, there was no harm in flashing them a bit. But overdoing it was a punishable offence. If found guilty, crying in gentle sobs followed as a punishment. One day, it seemed like a tall guy was not bent enough. No, he was fully bent. Owing to his height, it looked like he was less bent in comparison to others. The police suspected of him being less polite than the rest. Just like same-heighted soldiers are grouped together to make a parade, every civilian outing and task was chiseled into a parade. The prestige of the system depended on bent people. Translated to English it reads: Every place in the city was crowded and the butterfly had set out to see the city. People were rushing to punch in and out. Bound to go somewhere, coming from somewhere. This was the city after all. Nature had set aside the time to see the butterfly elsewhere. This time was not for the city. That was why, nobody in the city was looking at the butterfly. She was flying over the road. Her flight was right above the road for there was no other place for her to fly. The huge houses were like towering walls. Navigating between the many trains, buses and trucks, she made her way ahead. Nobody had seen this butterfly until now. Only a little boy’s eyes rested on it. He had come to see the city too. He had seen the city right when he had entered it and figured that each patch of the city resembles the one that came before as did the one after it. When he had roamed around to his heart’s content , everybody asked him: “What did you see in the city?” He said, “I saw a butterfly in the city”. . . .
