     there’s so much going on here. he had heard neighborhoods described in books, and sometimes he could imagine himself living in one. but it wasn’t this version of himself. it was a younger version. the one that still had parents, and probably could smile and laugh without a problem. they didn’t exist anymore though, and in those imaginations, the neighborhood was… different. it wasn’t this bright. the pavement didn’t hurt his feet.

    he hears the skateboard before he sees the other, and when he does he comes to a stop. eyes are wide, and he looks almost like a wild animal caught in headlights. everything about him screams that he is a complete mess. the blood only adds to that. he backs up a little when the other moves toward him. “wh-who wants to know?” not that he knows what the right answer would even be, but it’s instinct to ask. “why are you out here?”

  it takes a moment for skunk to fully notice the state that the other is in.  as he speaks, that’s when he notices the blood on his clothes.  he frowns, a worried look washing over his face.  what was a kid doing wandering the streets alone with blood stained clothes??  “my name’s skunk ... and i mean you no harm little buddy.  i just ... wanna make sure you’re doin’ okay y’know??”  

  he takes a step back, giving the stranger space.  he doesn’t want to intrude or spook them.  “i’m just goin’ for a nighttime skate.  takin’ some time for m’self y’know.  i live with a lotta people, so alone time is nice sometimes.”  he pauses, becoming aware that he’s rambling because he feels awkward about the situation.  “are you ... are you doin’ okay little dude??  are you safe??”

  brows furrow together, and sadness washes over his face for a moment.  “now that wasn’t very kind of you, neighbor.”  skunk comments, arms crossing over his chest.  “i might not be th’ smartest people around, y’know.  but that’s no reason to say such rude stuff.  i know i’m not the brightest, but i live a good life and i try to do right by everyone i meet.”  he lets out a sigh, head shaking from side to side.  “you realize y’ ain’t gonna get very far in life with that kinda piss poor attitude my friend.”

  there’s a brief frown that tugs at the corner of his lips as the other mentions that she hadn’t seen his lost friend.  however, at the offer to help search his face lights up.  “really!?  you’d help me look??”  skunk asks, head tilting to the side.  “i really appreciate it, dude ...  i’ve been lookin’ for the little lady all night.  she usually comes home fine.  but it’s been a couple days and ... ”  words trail off for a moment and he shakes his head, he’s getting ahead of himself.  “my names skunk, by th’ way.  thank you so much for helpin’ me look for tofu.”

         they hear him before they see him,  music blaring and wheels spinning against ground.  when he appears in front of them,  they stop walking,  looking at him with their head tilted slightly to the side.  what an enthusiastic greeting and smile  ..  they lift their arm up to wave at them.  ah  ..  the music  ?  they didn’t really mind too much.  but skating  ..  now that’s a topic they preferred to have  !  it’s been a bit since they have but skating was something they used to excel at,  even competing at some point.  they nod to the question,  hands reaching out,  making grabbing motions.  seems they want the board.     “     wanna see  ?     “

  skunk smiles as the arm is waved in reference to the music.  he knew it was loud, but he didn’t want to disrupt anyone.  “that’s good.  i like listenin’ to music when i skate y’know.  but my opossum tofu ate my headphones last week.  y’ can’t blame her!!  she must have been mighty hungry.  so ... that explains the speaker or whatever ...”  at the nod, the smile turns into a grin.  he chuckles as the other makes a grabbing motion at his board, arms extending forward to offer the skateboard to the stranger.  “oh buddy, i’d love t’ see!!  what kinda skills do y’ got under your sleeve??”  he asks, head tilting to the side a fraction.
