sometimes i think unicorn academy can just be a casual interest now but then i see a single clip of the characters and i’m like oughfhrjrindifbejdh. my kids. my children. the group of pixels i will forever have thoughts about even though they aren’t from a very good show and frankly i don’t have the media literacy to make them a better show in my head. this beer is starting to taste like maternal instincts towards [girl with one personality trait]

me, 1 minute later: the writing of the unicorn academy pilot has peaks and valleys but the scene where valentina bumps into sophia prompting ava’s infodump about her and the furis maybe possibly could’ve been stronger if she’d bumped into ava instead and sophia helped her up?? and actually called valentina out to the point of provoking her?? bc 1) parallels to their meeting and 2) ava’s line about valentina not being used to being called out only makes sense if she’s meant to be unreliable which doesn’t make sense bc the rest of her assessment of valentina is meant to be taken as expositional fact 3) sophia’s absolutely shown as someone with a lot to learn about interpersonal relationships and the ultimate intention of her conflict with ava near the end of season 1 is to make her learn about The Power of Friendship and the audience feel like she’s changed… only her friendship with ava is so objectively one-sided in terms of acts of service (ava saves her life multiple times in the span of one semester. girl.) that the audience might just feel like she’s too bad a friend and too bad a role model to keep watching. and yes that is the point she has to have a problem to solve but!!! that lesson feels kind of flip-floppy when most of the other main characters side with her instead of ava. there is literally no reason for ava to be friends with her at the start of the show other than her personal desperation. which is a fine motivation! you go girl! but it could’ve been strengthened—and given sophia some much-needed sympathy for later—if she’d stood up for ava. even if her primary motivation to do so was her annoyance with valentina/her desire to do what’s right in her eyes regardless of the social consequences and not any desire to deepen her relationship with ava, it could still seem like a selfless action to ava and therefore cause her to cling to sophia more. like enough to make the conflict more even in terms of who did who wrong bc yes their argument leans towards sophia doing ava more wrong but it’s so hard to root for her to learn her lesson when it’s hard to root for her in general!!! and yes valentina is meant to be easily “redeemable” — an egotistical bully who still acts in the best interests of unicorn island — but it’s so easy to either change what ava says about her reaction (she literally doesn’t gaf abt getting called out. she’s smirking on that elevator handsome-robloxian-style) OR change what sophia says and her reaction so SOMETHING makes sense. anyway idk if that makes sense maybe i just hate sophia

unicorn academy redesign #1: Sophia Mendoza and Wildstar!

random headcanons: - eyebags from lack of sleep, sneaks around at night - prefers to ride western (learned it on her family’s ranch!) and, barring that, rides bareback! Struggles with english riding, finding it too rigid - edgy alternative style with some western hints - a bit of a recovering misandrist… - can (badly) play the guitar </3 - Wildstar is more of a traditional + ancient unicorn in appearance- she’s got the bearded chin and long tufted tail! - Wildstar in irl horse terms would be an Appaloosa-draft cross to account for her size and star spots!! <3

Headcanons: - often got away with pranks + hijinks at home, but is getting caught more often at the academy now… - dimples ☑️ - almost a princely, prim look - hiding an undertone of edge! - learns a lot of trick riding skills, though generally rides English the rest of the time! - Storm: I think in the terms of irl breeds she’d be a strange mix of a fjord horse and percherons, granting her massive + thunderous size alongside an iconic spiky hairstyle!
