I think the biggest reason why Mike and El aren’t compatible is because they’re both saviors. Both of them like to help other people and look out for them, and these two personalities clash

When El can’t be a superhero anymore because she lost her powers, El feels like she’s not enough for Mike, and conversely, Mike never feels like he’s enough for El because he can’t protect her and he gets angry in seasons 3/4 because she doesn’t need him anymore
