            ash  sits  alone  mainly,  nursing  the  glass  of  whiskey  tightly  in  his  hand.  though  when  he’s  approached,  ash  is  quick  to  mask  himself  with  his  SIGNATURE  grin  !  the  last  thing  ash  williams  needs  it  anybody  to  know  he’s  running  from  his  problems.  ❝  nah,  just  passin’  through,  actually.  but  i  wouldn’t  be  opposed  to  staying  for  some  cozy  company.  ❞  the  stump  of  a  hand  is  hidden  away,  tucked  into  the  side  of  his  leather  jacket  and  away  from  prying  eyes.  best  not  to  scare  off  company.  he  hasn’t  come  up  with  a  good  cover  story  yet.  ❝  you  looked  mighty  fine  up  there.  ❞

             decades  of  unspoken  words  between  them,  years  lost  and  wasted  to  the  passage  of  time.  a  gulf  between  them,  yet  ash  still  stands  as  close  as  he  did  twenty  years  ago.  tracy  chapman  croons  through  the  radio  speakers,  and  the  pair  quietly  work  in  tandem  on  the  delta’s  engine.  it  reminds  ash  of  when  they  were  younger,  the  months  they  would  spend  working  on  his  derby  car,  before  he  would  smash  the  shit  out  of  it  for  a  lousy  five  hundred  bucks  and  a  trophy.  whatever  he  won  was  about  as  much  as  it  would  cost  to  fix  up  the  next  car  for  the  next  summer.  simpler  times.  BETTER  times.

             there  isn’t  may  words  spoken  between  them,  despite  how  much  has  been  left  unsaid.  it’s  best  to  let  those  sleeping  dogs  lie.  the  last  few  days  have  caused  nothing  but  ache,  for  the  BOTH  of  them  —  old  wounds  that  have  been  peeled  open  and  festered  into  something  ugly . . .  ash  can’t  tell  if  he’s  thankful  for  it  or  not.  can’t  tell  if  he’s  happy  that  they  don’t  talk,  that  they don’t  acknowledge  it  —  or  if  it  tears  up  his  insides  like  a  deadite.

             it’s  almost  sheepish,  the  way  ash  looks  at  him.  sneaking  a  glance,  like  he  doesn’t  want  will  to  know  he’s  even  looking  at  him  in  the  first  place.  when  will  feels  his  eyes  on  him,  ash  abruptly  looks  back  down  at  the  engine  to  avoid  his  gaze.  when  has  ash  williams  ever  felt  so  nervous  about  something  ?  about  SOMEONE  ?  he’s  always  been  the  type  to  shoot  first,  think  never  —  and  shit,  he’s  lived  by  that.  you  only  live  once,  right  ?

            ash’s  teeth  worry  his  bottom  lip,  quietly  humming  along  to  the  tune  playing  from  the  radio.  ❝  you  remember  when  we  snuck  in  to  see  jaws  2  after  we  saw  grease  on  opening  night  ?  ❞  he  doesn’t  know  why  he’s  bringing  it  up,  why  he’s  so  stuck  on  the  PAST.  ash  looks  at  him  finally,  offers  will  a  little  lop - sided  grin.  ❝  and  we  accidentally  saw  jimmy  o’hara  fingering  wendy  chase  in  the  back  of  the  theatre  ?  ❞  he  chuckles  then,  wipes  his  hand  on  his  thigh,  leaving  a  thick  trail  of  grease  in  it’s  wake.  ❝  i  watched  it  the  other  day  with  kelly,  and  i  forgot  just  how  cheesy  that  movie  looked.  we  used  to  think  that  was  the  shit.  ❞  he  talks  about  whatever  the  hell  comes  to  mind  when  he’s  nervous,  metallic  fingers  drumming  against  the  hood  of  his  oldsmobile,  trying  to  drown  out  the  song  STILL  fucking  playing.  it  hits  too  close  to  home.  ❝  that  was  the  first  summer  i  met  you . . .  ❞

            then  there’s  that  silence  again,  acidic  and  heavy  in  the  air  between  them.  it  felt  tense  enough  you  could  saw  a  revved  up  chainsaw  through  it.  though  ash  williams,  ever  the  fumbling  romantic  (  that  old  loverboy  heart,  buried  deep  down  beneath  decades  of  trauma  ),  decides  that  maybe  now  is  the  best  time  to  try  and  bridge  the  gap  between  the  two  of  them.  he  turns  towards  will  in  the  mechanic  shop,  one  that  once  belonged  to  his  dad,  and  had  now  belonged  to  him  —  holding  out  his  hand,  palm  offered  to  the  other  man.   ❝  could  i  bother  you  for  a  dance  ?  i  cannot  promise  that  i  won’t  step  on  your  toes.  ❞  a  small  grin  takes  over  ash’s  features,  ever  the  charmer  he  was.  ❝  y ‘ know  —  for  old  times’  sake.  ❞
