DQM3 - Circle of Caprice, Upper Echelon
After some training, I managed to defeat Estark Izmah. That means it's time to explore a new echelon! I also took the time to do some monster synthesis.
Tumblr media
Hatched my first rainbow egg, and it contained my first A rank monster, the lovely tentacular! I love this name because it evokes the Venomous Tentacula plant from the Harry Potter series, which is spelled "Tentacular" in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for GBA. The original Japanese versions of Dragon Quest games have クラーゴン rather than Tentacular, which is based on the kraken rather than its tentacles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The constellation weather continues to be beautiful, and it's probably my favorite. I experienced a rendering glitch that allowed me to gaze upon it without distractions!
Tumblr media
Now for some interesting Monsterpedia entries.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Slime snack and napir are so cute! Both monster designs are references to Japanese culture. Slime snack is obviously based on a delicious skewer of hanami dango, and its Japanese name is simply dango slime だんごスライム. I love napir with its little pillow and jammies. It's described as a tapir that eats dreams, which sounds exactly like the Pokemon Drowzee. I realized it must be a cultural thing, and sure enough, there's a similar mythical creature called baku. Apparently napir's Japanese name ゆめにゅうどう is something like a dream monk, so I guess its bathrobe is also a monk's robe!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love these designs. Heligator majestically soars through the sky, and I think its English name is meant to reference a helicopter. In Japanese, it's just burn alligator ワニバーン. Baleen mage (whale mage ホエールマージ) in particular is just the cutest thing I've ever seen.
Tumblr media
Finally, we have Robbin' 'Ood. I didn't recollect until I did some research, but his trivia contains a deep cut to Dragon Quest IV! Quick Draw McGore is one of Alena's opponents in the tournament at Endor Colosseum.
Tumblr media
Despite this, Robbin' 'Ood doesn't actually appear in DQIV. However, since DQM3 is a spinoff of DQIV, I wish there were even more references like this!

Why is it that SO MANY Dragon Quest protagonists end up in a prison or forced labor camp at some point? Does anyone else feel like that's a weirdly specific subplot that keeps turning up over and over again?

Do you all remeber this post?
Tumblr media
I am actually smarter now, and I now know that THIS is not a "I have no text!" message. Because if Malroth had no dialogue here he'd have the beige "hey!" popup like in buildertopias.
This. This ****? text? It's japanese text. Like how japanese islands have all signs show as ******.
Malroth is ACTUALLY SAYING SOMETHING HERE and I just realised it.
So I ran to the japanese version as fast as I could.
Tumblr media
Oh gods oh gods oh gods there's text in Malhalla for Malroth oh gods
Tumblr media
Oh.
Well.
That's incredibly anticlimactic.
Under closer inspection he's just saying "I do have dialogue here, but the dialogue data file is wrong, go verify/check that it's correct".
Uh... mild success? He has half a dialogue i guess, he has 1 out of 2 required files maybe?
Just- I thought... since it has all that katakana on top would mean it was actual in-game text.....
darnit devs...
The more accurate translation I think is "Check TalkFlowData!", which is the name of the file that handles dialogue.
Tumblr media
If the game throws that error message it means the character has no "TalkFlowData" file and will default to the beige popup.
I believe each dialogue prompt has a TalkFlowData file (cutscene handler) and a normal Text file with all their text. (the one that is arleady reversed engineered)
So I suppose this means that Malhalla Malroth has a TalkFlowData file, but no text file, which is why this message appears.
So why the heck does he have a flow file devs? tell me tell me tell me

Dragon Quest Builders and Dragon Quest Builders 2 are both on sale on Steam until September 30. I decided to buy both of them, but it turns out there's a bundle where you can get a few more dollars off! So I bought it. I can't wait to play these widely beloved games!

Metal slime hunting was a success! I tried to face King Barbatos for the first time and won with a new team. Hunter mech is just here to hunt metal slimes, I used my trusty brimstone bulb in the battle.
Tumblr media
All that stuff with Sir Percival happened. It's presented as a good thing, but did Psaro perform the exact same dark contract magic as Barbatos did to bring Percival back to life? Also, assuming there's any continuity left, is Percival's master in DQIV Barbatos or Psaro?
I really remember almost nothing about DQIV at this point. Wow, I think it's been 10 years since I played it! My first Dragon Quest game! Percival is such a perfect name for him. I was surprised to see that this name for him is new in DQM3, in both English and Japanese. In localized DQIV, he's Roseguardin. However, in Japanese DQIV, he's just Psaro Knight. I guess that means he didn't really have a name, but ピサロナイト is so cool!!! I suppose that also answers my question; he was always Psaro's knight.
Speaking of monsters without names, a familiar face hatched from an egg. Duffer? His species is just Psaro's pawn?! I had forgotten that he didn't have a nickname in DQIV, either. But Psaro's pawn (similar in Japanese) isn't much of a name...

DQM3 - Monster Lore
Getting back into Dragon Quest Monsters 3: The Dark Prince. I've been training newly synthesized monsters extremely slowly, which isn't working, so I think I'll try farming metal slimes. I like to read all the Monsterpedia entries as I acquire new monsters; they're always full of surprises!
Several entries hint at the differences between "monsters" and "animals". Fat rat obviously has an "animal counterpart", while drohl drone apparently could have gone either way. Meanwhile, bludgerigar's entry details how to COOK AND EAT IT.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wait, I had no idea budgie was short for budgerigar! The localization team really put an immense amount of effort into the punny monster names. But... I still wish they were closer to the original Japanese names. Bludgerigar is "pikkii", how cute is that!
Sometimes the monster names do make me smile. I hatched an egg and asked, "Who's this fella?" Why, a tree feller!
Tumblr media
I know it's all in fun, but it's kind of disturbing how many monsters are described as having once been human. We see references to this in the main series as well (like Nimzo in DQV). The hubris of one evil human is one thing, but it's just too unsettling to apply this origin story to a whole species of monster. I prefer to interpret these stories as dubious myths about the creation of the FIRST togre or morphean mushroom.
