Religious Imageries in JJK: The Conflicting Views of Shinto and Buddhism.
Disclaimer: This is not an explanation post, this is an observer post. I will try to sum up what I have observed so far.
Let's begin with the definition and history of both Shinto and Buddhism.
Shinto [神道]: Combined with the kanji of God/Kami (神) and Road /Michi(道), Shinto literally means The way of the God(s). It is the indigenous religion of Japan and is as old as Japan itself.
Shinto belief is polytheist and animistic as it has almost 8 million gods that are derived from nature and natural things. This religion revolves around "Kami". Kami can be manifested from anything, but the most important Kami are the natural ones.
Sun, Rain, Earth etc. The most important central Kami is Amaterasu the Kami of the Sun. The exact history of Shinto is untraceable but it was mentioned in the Yayoi Period (300 BCE to 300 CE) of text.
Shinto describes the world as a inhabitant of the human and the kami they worship. It describes the world as founded by the kami and once humans/ living beings pass away they become kami as well.
It is safe to say that Shinto belief described humanity as living being as a whole, where even after death they don't living. The idea of morality or immorality is also absent from it. The existence of Kami is the manifestation of humanity itself and not separated from human beings.
Fun Fact: Chinese indigenous religion 'Dao' has the same characters as Shinto's kanji. So it might be possible that Shinto actually comes from Chinese Daoism.
Buddhism: Buddhism is an Indian religion. It revolves around the teaching of Buddha. Buddha is no myth. Even though convoluted, early texts gives his name as "Gautama" and he lived around 5th to 6th Century BCE.
In India his name is mostly known as "Siddharth". He was born in Lumbini in present day Nepal and grew up in Kapilavastu. The border of India and Nepal, a town of the Ganges plain of present day Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
The most notable person who helped spread Buddhism around India so much that it was spread in the NEA and SEA is Emperor Asoka (304-232 BCE) from the Maurya Empire (322-180 BCE).
Buddhism circles around the suffering of human, the circle of life and Karma (deed). Where a soul is constant as it is being born in this world as human, it goes through the cycle of life (suffering) and it dies.
It also talks about Dharma as the ultimate truths, also that humans are born to fulfill a certain role. Moksha: The liberation from the earthly desire which should be the ultimate goal of a human being.
It also draws the line between God and humans as Gods are separated from the earthly matters and pushes the idea of Gods creating the universe and the creating the humanity.
The Mix of both Religion:
Though the idea of Shinto and Buddhism is pretty contradicting it existed with each other for centuries.
Even though Buddhism entered in japan in Yayoi Period (250-538 AD), it became popular in Asuka Period (538-710) due to buddhist sect taking the rein of the country. Initially Buddhism and Shinto coexisted and even mixed with each other. It was called Shinbutsu-Shougou. However, later it was forcefully separated by Japanese nationalists in Meiji Era (1868-1912) and Shinto became the state religion of Japan with the Emperor being worshipped as Kami the descendants of Amaterasu.
Cursed Spirit: The reason I am writing this is not because the obvious depiction of buddha, Buddhist shrines and mention of clans and sects etc. What caught my interest was that the idea of "Cursed Spirit".
The textbook explanation of Cursed Spirit is that the reaction of human emotions but as we see it is actually the manifestation of human existence. As long as humans will exist, curses will also exist.
Which pretty much resembles the idea of Kami.
The timeline: The golden era of jujutsu was Heian Era which historically existed between 794-1185 AD. Almost a century after Buddhism was introduced in Japan. Also in that era Sukuna rose up as the king of curses. Which may indicate the clans existed even before and Sukuna existed throughout.
Characters like Kenjaku and Tengen their birth and living timeline are unknown but they might just as be as old as Japan, like Shinto.
Getou and Megumi are the only two people who can control curses as Shikigami. Which is another japanese Shinto belief that has also been associated with "Curses" during Heian Era.
The people who used to control Shikigami were called Onmyoji (Yin-Yang Master).
Both of them were either antagonised or villfied by the jujutsu society at one point.
Also the most important part that made me think about this is...Sukuna's domain.
Tumblr media
This resembles an average Shinto shrine...
Tumblr media
The Tori is missing.
Insanity.
Anyways. I am not saying that Gege is making one religion look bad and another look good. It's not true and actually far from it. Though contradiction, Gege shows the good and bad of both sides. Kenjaku is bad and the higher ups are as worse as him.
Personally I think this is a battle of belief of the world with a main character emerges with no beliefs at all. Itadori Yuuji hates Sukuna but not by the virtue of being Gojo's student but his own opinion about him. In the latest chapter he says "Human beings are not a tool, so nobody's existence is premediated." Which contradicts the idea of "Dharma".
The message might be "If you want to change the world, you have to diverge from the existing path and forge your own."

The way that after Patroclus died, Achilles slept next to his corpse, fought a river God, butchered Hector and dragged his body around Troy several times with his chariot.
“He is half of my soul, as the poets say”.
Patroclus literally was Achilles’ impulse control. He was the half with the empathy and the generosity and the immense kindness. When he died, all that was left of Achilles was a human weapon.
Literally how destructively beautiful is that. Imagine the depth of this love. *lets out a mental guttural scream and sob*

Thank you for your kindness, Master. Are you busy? I won't stop you. WOH, episode 2, part 2. ZCL gave ZZS a plaque with his name, and the servant accuses the boy of not giving the plaque with his name to a random person on the street, adds that ZCL's father said that, but ZCL interrupts him and explains that this is what his son told him to do father. ZCL says that at home you rely on your parents, and outside you rely on your own friends. He adds that good men should help each other. ZZS listens to this while pouring wine into his bottle and coughing like a sick man. ZCL tells the servant to look at ZZS, saying how sick he is and since he has already met ZZS, then he is. This time the servant interrupts him and asks the boy how he knows that the beggar is a righteous man. He tells him to look at the beggar's clothes and asks ZCL what will happen if the beggar turns out to be a bad person. ZCL looks down and ZZS listens to the two's conversation. The servant once again asks ZCL to come with him, otherwise they will be late. ZZS thanks the boy for his kindness and asks if the boy is busy, adding that he will not stop him. ZCL explains that he almost forgot that he went out to buy cookies for his mother. Thanking him, the boy says that they will meet again. He bows to ZZS and leaves. ZZS puts down the bottle and takes the sign with the boy's name in his hand. The tablet says Mirror Lake Sect, Zhang Cheng Ling. ZZS says in a low voice to himself never mind, he adds that when Jiu Xiao was young he was as naive as him. Meanwhile, in another part of the city, WKX and GX are walking across the bridge, who explains that she wanted to punish the beggar and asks WKX why he didn't let her punish this sick man. The two enter Qing Yu Tower. GX says the beggar's footsteps were suspicious and the beggar was annoying. WKX stands at the balustrade of the tower and looks into the distance and asks if she could face Supple Steps. GX repeats the words of Supple Steps as if she didn't know what he was talking about and asks what sect they are from. WKX calmly replies that it is from Siji Manor. Once again, GX repeats what WKX said when asking about Siji Manor. He asks what sect this is and why she hasn't heard of it. WKX still stands staring into the distance. In his mind he says to himself that this man might be who he is looking for, so he should go see him. ZZS's meeting with ZCL brings back memories, ZZS realizes that the young boy reminds him of his master's son. However, ZCL, despite the instructions given to him by the servant, behaves as befits a young, well-mannered man. He does not remain indifferent to the sick-looking beggar, he even offers him shelter. ZZS considers it naive, he knows that there is a lot of truth in what the servant says to the boy. Jianghu World is not a safe place. ZZS guesses that ZCL is the youngest child of the sect leader and must have been brought up under shelter. WKX moved away from the place where it met ZZS. It seems to me that he wanted to gain some distance from everything he had discovered, think it through and organize his thoughts. He knew that Siji Manor no longer existed, but was surprised to discover that there was a person who knew the fighting techniques of this sect. He wanted to know who this person was. GX, on the other hand, did not understand the interest that her master showed in the beggar, she did not know WKX's secret and what could connect him with this person. ZZH still in ZZS's hobo clothes and looks cute with his attitude. GJ looks great as the thoughtful WKX who wants to know the secret of the beggar he meets. I like their first delicate interactions with each other.

Instead of wasting time looking for a cure for my disease, I prefer to have a jug of wine with me and travel around the world with my soul mate while my health is still good for me. We can listen to poems and drink wine together. Do what we want and have no regrets. WOH, episode 36, part 15. He also sees ZZS spraying him with water at the lake and hears ZZS's words that instead of wasting time looking for a cure for his disease, ZZS prefers to have a jug of wine and travel around the world after his soul mate as long as his health is still good for him. At this point we see ZZS fixing his hair trying to imitate WKX. ZZS then pinches WKX sprinkled him with herbs, and later sees WKX jump ZZS while escaping from the puppets. He hears ZZS say that they can listen to poems and drink wine together. Do what they want and have no regrets. WKX recalls another conversation they had together. After a while, WKX returns to reality and looks at ZZS with tears in his eyes. YBY's voice is heard saying that the original Qi of the Combined Six Cultivation is untamed. Normally, the human body cannot control it. Someone must sacrifice himself and be the seed so that through him the practitioner receives the energy that is harnessed. With closed eyes, WKX transfers its energy to ZZS. He hears the voice of YBY who says that you can start building new power only after destroying the old one. One who becomes a seed helps the practitioner avoid death, but as a result all his meridians are destroyed and his hair turns gray. Someone once made such a sacrifice for me. WKX begins to lose strength and knows that it is dying. But he still hears a voice that says that this is why YBY has had to face the cursed burden of being immortal for so many years. He states that he had to report them until today. He adds that no one can go back to their youth, but there will always be people who experience it. ZZS regains consciousness and sees that the angry head of WKX, sitting opposite him, has gray hair. His hands slip and ZZS, surprised, grabs them in his own. Many years later, an elder ZCL tells his students what happened on the mountain when the avalanche occurred. That an avalanche buried ZJ and the Scorpion King. The Scorpion organization collapsed and disappeared from Jianghu. Students ask what happened to ZZS and WKX. ZCL explains to students that in order to practice this unique technique, someone must agree to become a vessel, a source of original power, which will then be passed on to the cultivator. He adds that no matter how powerful a martial arts master someone is, even if he or she does not die from the explosion of power, he or she will die from the destruction of the meridians. One of the younger students asks if they succeeded. But before ZCL answers, he hears his daughter calling him dad and running to him. ZCL takes her in his arms, the girl's name is Xiang. His wife GXL approaches him and asks what he was telling them about. The disciple explains that the master told them about the Combined Method of Six Cultivation. GXL tells them not to listen to him and tells ZCL not to talk nonsense. ZCL says that's it for today and they should go out for dinner. This scene in the Arsenal and its ending makes your heart fall to pieces. WKX is dying and wants to enjoy the presence of ZZS as long as possible. He knows that when ZZS wakes up, WKX will be dead. He is sorry but understands that it was the only solution. Life for life. When ZZS opens his eyes, at first he doesn't fully understand what happened, but he only understands it when WKX's hands slip from his. The play of emotions here is huge, ZZH and GJ showed that they can show them without words.

honest opinion don’t kill me
i’m so tired of taylor swift constantly proving the media right by being the boy crazy girl that they make her out to be. but she can write songs so much better than “i’m high from smoking your jokes all night” like we get it you can’t be alone to save your FUCKING LIFE. go to therapy that’s not very independent strong woman it’s very concerning that you fall in love so easily and quickly and publicly……and change your entire personality around that man.
maybe it’s because i had other things to worry about in high school so i never dated, and i was a very brutal date when i did. maybe it’s me buut. taylor go to therapy. i hate it here
