If you are like me and suck at doing things without a checklist that you can carry around with you and gives you that little hit of dopamine every time you hit “I did this” and other cute little rewards (like the sleeping black cat hat!), you should check out Habitica. There is a browser site as well as apps for Android and Apple that all sync to each other. I’ve been using it for over a year and I love it. Plus it’s completely free! (Unless you want to buy gems or subscribe to support it and get access to some extras which are purely cosmetic.) And no ads! Habitica helps me figure out the rows in which to put my ducks (my ducks are all over the place but at least now I have them kind of corralled into one pond? lol).

Hey, just FYI for my folks who are trying to visit national parks, especially now that we’re getting into the off season, there are a LOT of passes available to help maybe get you and people with you into parks cheaper than the default entry fees:

America the Beautiful Interagency Annual Pass

The white bread cold cut sandwich of interagency passes

Good for a year

Strongly recommend you buy it in the first days of a month, because we can only mark it for a month, so if you buy it September 1st, and we punch it for September, it’ll be good until September 30th of     the next year.

Anyone can buy it, 2 people can sign and use it

$80, generally you start saving money after three national park visits

America the Beautiful Senior Passes

Must be 62 or older

Available as an annual pass for 20$, or a lifetime pass for 80$

May confer a 50% reduction in federal amenity prices in some parks (ie camping, boat launching, paid educational programing)

US citizens and residents only for some reason

Now for free passes!

America the Beautiful 4th Grade Pass

Extremely cool program where fourth graders get into the park for free

Print a voucher, and you exchange it for a pass

Good from September 1st on the year the student enters 4th grade, to August 31st before they start 5th.

Kids already get into parks for free, but this gets the hole family in

And now the Big One that is the reason I’m making this post:

America the Beautiful Access Pass

Lifetime pass for any US citizen or permanent resident who has any permanent disability

May confer a 50% reduction in federal amenity prices in some parks (ie camping, boat launching, paid educational programing)

You may need documentation proving that disability, but the parameters are very open. Documentation includes:

A Statement by a licensed physician that says the words ‘permanent disability’

A document issued by a Federal agency such as the Veteran’s Administration, Social Security Disability Income or Supplemental Security Income

A document issued by a State agency such as a vocational rehabilitation agency

Sometimes though you don’t even need that because a lot of parks have you sign an affidavit because most rangers don’t know how to make heads or tails of any of that stuff, and it can’t be verified at all by us. In the case of the affidavit you either read, or otherwise have made available to you a statement, you read it, and if it applies to you, you sign it.

So, you may be wondering, what counts as a permanent disability? Well:

A permanent disability is a permanent physical, mental, or sensory impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, such as caring for oneself, performing manual tasks, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, and working.

The rules for what constitutes a disability are deliberately broad, and intended to ensure that people with a wide variation in ability are ensured free access to Parks.

No one knows about this program but it’s one of the few things that make me very happy about the US government.

Please take advantage of it.

NOTE ON PASSES

Parks passes are good for the pass holder and everyone in a private vehicle with them at parks that charge per vehicle, whether it’s a little two seat sports car, or a packed RV. In parks that charge by the person, a pass is good for the pass-holder and three other adults. Kids under 16 get in free.

Passes are non-transferable. Your pass is yours only, and you must be present for it to be used (but you don’t need to be driving).

These passes are good for all federal recreation fee areas. That means National Parks, day use fees at national forests and grasslands, and at lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Passes can’t be replaced if lost. You’ll either have to re-purchase, or reapply for the pass. For the free passes that’s pretty easy, for the paid ones you’ll be out the cash.

They don’t work at Mount Rushmore.

EXACTLY WHAT TO SAY TO CUSTOMER SERVICE REPS TO SAVE THOUSANDS

You guys, I love talking with customer service reps.

Most people find that super weird. Why would you like to be put on hold? Why would you like battling with reps only to be told that “there’s nothing we can do?”

Why do I love it? Because I understand how to do it. Nine times out of ten, I succeed in getting what I want (and sometimes, more than what I want.) I’ve literally saved thousands of dollars, and sometimes earned money/perks, by simply taking a few minutes to call or tweet customer service.

I get it: you don’t want to be that person who complains about every little thing, and I totally understand. But you’re paying for an awesome customer experience (if it’s a major purchase, then even more reason for them to make it right!) That is your hard-earned money, and if you weren’t satisfied in any way, you should have no problem asking the company to fix it.

I just took a trip to Costa Rica with a friend (learn about our life-changing trip here!) and literally earned over $350 in miles, travel credit, and perks by contacting the airline’s customer service when something went wrong (first, a major delay and second, our seat-back screens didn’t work on our international flight.) At a time when companies are putting more stock in loyal customers – and airlines especially are scrambling to earn your business – demanding what you paid for just makes sense.

When I tell my friends about my mini-obsession, they say they’d love to do it too, but have no idea how. I’ve prepared an exact script for you, whether you’re on the phone or on social media/email, that has been proven to work.

1. Be polite and jovial…the entire time

If you’re on the phone, the customer service rep will usually state their name and ask how can they help you. They will be more willing to go out of their way to help if you treat them like a real human (shocking, I know.)

Here’s what you say: “Hello NAME, how are you? I’m doing fine, thank you for asking. I’m having an issue and I would love for you to help me.”

By asking them to help, you’re immediately giving them an opportunity for a win. Their brain should go, “Help? Yes! I can do that! That’s what I’m here for!”

2. State what happened

No matter how angry or fed up you are, make sure to still be kind and calm. You want to mention what you expected to happen (being billed a certain amount, a smooth flight, etc.), and why that didn’t happen. Say why you’re frustrated by it, but do not get upset. Mention that you’re disappointed or dissatisfied with the service you received.

I need someone to write and post and make available for free/donation a productivity app for Android where I can set certain apps for it to block according to a time and/or calendar and have Require Challenges (like StayFocusd) of varying difficulty depending on the app for when I want/need to access one of those apps outside the "allowed" time.

Or maybe after I'm done with this programming class I'll binge learn the other programming languages I need on SoloLearn and I'll build it myself.

I think it's hilarious that Tumblr and other apps keep showing me the Stories app where you pick from two responses to a scenario and almost every scenario they show in the ads are "my s.o. is cheating on me!!!! òwó" and while I would be very upset to find my future s.o. cheating on me, I am also amused by the fact that they clearly don't know their audience (me) and the extremely low likelihood of that kind of stuff getting me to partake in their escapist dramatic dribble. Because maintaining a relationship is infinitely less interesting than forming or destroying one.

Or maybe they see I'm not in a relationship and wouldn't I like to pretend I'm in one where my s.o. is cheating all the time or has a brat for a kid whom I have to win over or else Prince Charming will leave and my life is certifiably over? Ugh why would I want to deal with any of that. Why, if you're trying to sell me into a relationship, would you try to tell me they're like that? Why do you think I'd want to pretend all relationships are like that? You think my current (non-existent) relationship is boring? Or do you think I should think it's boring? 😃
