“Just Another Day” is actually so fucked up. On your first watch it’s a normal musical opening song. You’re introduced to the family members, their dynamics, personalities. There’s the quirky suburban mom, her sarcastic son, neurotic daughter, and dad who’s just eyeing his best honestly. But every rewatch it becomes more haunting. More heart wrenching to listen to. You can see the cracks that have already formed in the family. Diana is clearly unfulfilled. She hates her husband, thinks her daughter is a freak, and seems to have the best relationship with her son. Gabe just sort of floats around, only really interacting with Diana. He speaks to Natalie and Dan, trying to get their attention but to no avail. None of the lyrics are hyperbole. They hurt all the time. When they cry, when they work, when they try. Gabe’s presence never gives them any reprieve. Gabe’s gonna live forever, and this feeling will never go away

I rewatched n2n a couple nights ago because it left pbs and sobbed like a baby. Natalie Goodman is 1000% stronger than I could ever be. “I love you as much as I can” would absolutely wreck me because WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT MEAN??? Like I would mulling over that for daysss. But my real last straw would be “who are you again?” That would’ve actually killed me.

Headcanon: Diana spent the first year of Natalie's life panicking and rushing her to the doctor over the slightest thing because she was terrified and almost convinced they were going to lose her like they lost Gabe

do you all ever wonder how long it took for natalie to learn her brother’s name? the goodmans clearly don’t say it casually around the house, so i’m just picturing little eight year old natalie going up to the attic for the first time and seeing boxes of baby clothes that she knows aren’t hers with a strange name written on them.

or maybe this isn’t actually her first time, maybe she’s been up here before, but that was before she learned how to read so the sharpie letters on the box meant nothing to her. and maybe she started playing with the toys in the box when dan or diana found her, and it caused a weeks-long full mental breakdown and the house was full of screaming and crying and she decided to never go up to the attic again.

but she’s eight now and despite her previous resolve, she’s curious and now she knows how to read, so when she sees the letters spelling out GABRIEL, she puts two and two together and finally learns who this mysterious brother is that seems to haunt their house.
