deltarune heights (the topic haunted me during writing)

i'm probably far from the first person to do this but i got hung up on what the possible heights of all the characters could be when tinkering with a fic

here we've got the sprite comparison. i lined them all up according to the sprite sheet's boxes (yes, susie's shoes are apparently big enough to warrant that one pixel lower)

as you can see from the lines i drew, it's hard to be precise at the pixel scale. the lines are thick but they're only one pixel tall. i resorted to going with the bottom of the line being the tip of the character's head. i forewent the fluff/feathery bits at the top of ralsei and birdly's heads, though.

i did my best to measure out heights teenagers might reasonably have into the height comparison site and then fiddled with the numbers until it fit and the line at the top of the head coincided with my comparison lines' bottom.

i feel like that was the best way to make it as accurate as possible.

of course there is also a possibility kris is of average height and all monsters are just bigger, but that would put even just toriel (measured her as well even if i didn't put her here, she'd be 6'6 in this comp if you're curious) at over 7 feet which. as i said, uh, possible! but less probable to me.

overall, all i mostly wanted was the intervals between all of them to be a bit clearer. you just gotta add like half a foot to all of them if you really want kris to be of average human height.

what we've got then is:

kris - 5'0 ft (152 cm) ralsei - 5'2 ft (157 cm) berdly - 5'5 ft (165 cm) noelle - 5'8.5 ft (174 cm) susie - 6'0 ft (183 cm)

reflections: this fandom forgets too often that a. kris is tiny!! they're so small!! points and laughs. no wonder susie can just pick them up and throw them b. ralsei is taller than kris! it's real close but it's there! c. i prolly could've nudged berdly downwards to make his feet look more like they're standing on the ground but i kept to my sprite box rules, ok that's all byeee

does anyone have a screenshot of answering "of course, games are fun" after the shadow mantle fight to susie, but in a weird route save? i've seen people say kris has a different reaction to susie bringing up berdly than in the normal route, but i've yet to find the actual moment clipped

now. i've only heard this secondhand, and cannot for the life of me find the post i got it from so take my words with a grain of salt. i've heard that under certain circumstances (which might include being on a snowgrave route but i don't remember), during the roaring knight boss fight, you can get flavor text that mentions kris thinking about berdly. kris thinking about berdly. again my source is flimsy so i have no clue if it's totally unprompted or if there's something within the context of the fight that it would connect to.

but regardless of that, let's pretend for a minute that we know this text exists. just think about it. remember berdly's backstory, about him being forgettable as a child to the point where people even forgot his name? in the snowgrave route, there's nothing to suggest that anyone, even his own parents, visits him in the hospital.

and now we have kris thinking about him when he's not even around. and sure, that's a little less surprising if it's exclusive to snowgrave, but still. what makes it better is this isn't a direct result of a dialouge option the player chose or a niche object/location they can check. it doesn't rely on the player remembering berdly. it's kris who's thinking of him.

if ANYONE has evidence of this flavor text actually being real then i beg of you to show me. because the concept of this alone is everything to me.

SOME DELTARUNE SPOILERS IDK JUST KERDLY THINGS

Anyway, I've recently been thinking about Berdly, and how Kris seems to be the only person to actually like him, like, at all.

If you think about it, everyone Berdly interacts with does so out of necessity, or just being too polite to shut him down completely.

Alphys throws out the apples he gives her when hes trying to be a "teacher's pet", Susie and Ralsei pretty much disregard him, Queen TOTALLY disregards him, and even Noelle, the person he would consider his BEST FRIEND seems to just be humoring him out of pity, and if she were less of a pushover, she would ditch him entirely. Pretty much all others who know him just act like he doesn't exist.

And this isn't completely unjustified, because Berdly is a fucking insufferable asshole.

He loves to brag all the time, takes credit for other people's work, and insults others constantly to make himself feel better.

But these behaviors are shown to be out of a feeling of loneliness, that he has to act out in order to be perceived, to not be forgotten. This, ironically, brings about the exact opposite effect, and just pushes others further away from him.

He has shown time and time again that he fears being alone, he desires companionship, he copes with the resentment of others by believing they must simply be jealous of his intelligence or in love with him.

Nobody likes him, nobody wants to be his friend, he always has to be the one to initiate because everyone will just avoid him.

Except Kris.

In canon, they have been shown to often be the one to seek him out, whether it's to prank call him or play games.

Kris seems to have a bit of a soft spot for him, and are willing to go out of their way to help him when he needs it (like when he accidently uninstalled minecrap and kris walked him through fixing it and NOELLE FUCKING SAID IT WAS CUTE LIKE GIRL YOU KNOW WHO THE BIG PRANK CALLER IS IN THIS TOWN YOU THINK KRIS WAS CUTE TO HIM)

Well, Kris seems to be a kind person in general, this tends to only present itself in serious situations, doing something like that seems a biiiit out of character for them.

Also the bit with him in the hospital fucking FLOORED me, like oh my god Kris you asked Susie to stay behind, turned on the radiator, changed his FUCKING WATER BOTTLE, and then noticed that "it might be your imagination, but he seems calmer" like bestie i didn't know you were NURTURING like i get dragging him across hometown to get him to the hospital and then slumping over to Noelle's house to reassure and warn her, but to FUCKING try to NURSE BERDLY BACK TO HEALTH like do you know????? do you FUCKING know???? how many hurt/comfort fics i have read??????? do you know??????????? WTFFFFFFFFFFFFF

And what's also really cute is how in the normal route the two options on the Berdly phone call in chapter 4 BOTH lead to Berdly expecting Kris to wanna be his date at the festival???? this plus the fact Susie and Noelle are canonically gonna be going together as a DATE??????

But, yeah, anyway, I think Kris genuinely cares about Berdly, possibly as more than a friend?????

I think they would be mostly frustrated at the SOUL for fucking with whatever plans Kris has at the festival for dark fountains and shit, and those probably wouldn't involve Berdly.

(BUT ISTG BERDLY IS GONNA BE SOOOOO FUCKING IMPORTANT NEXT CHAPTER TRUST)

Imagine how cool it would be when Susi and Ralsei find out that Kris has been working on the Knight the whole time. What if we had a fight against our own friends? And Knight will be an ally we can't control during the battle

Kris, knowing that their friends in real danger have to be on Knight's side for... Whatever thing they promised. Susie realising that Kris has been lying to her the whole time... I mean chapter 4 is already depressing i would love to see such fight
