Hi! I saw you studied using TTMIK as well? I'm just starting out at their level 1 but I had a question. Did you feel like it was a solid base or did you feel like you had to add extra materials to your study?? I've only just started learning Korean but its so much fun!

hi, yeah i love ttmik so much. but when i started learning korean i used other materials as well, like books or other different/random websites. when I started with level 1 I already had some basics and was able to read the alphabet (veeeery slow of course). when you have the basics down i totally feel like following the lessons is enough, you can always look up other explanations for grammar points or sample sentences in books or online if needed. i think it’s important to follow one curriculum. i made the mistake to use a lot of stuff and now i’m kinda stuck because everything is mixed up in my head. so yeah, i hope this “helped” :D happy studying. 화이팅!

5 essential tricks for language learners

Speak more often then read or write something.

If you can`t memorize a word or a phrase, a) sing it, b) shout it, c) pronounce it as the rudest swear word in your native language.

Read aloud the articles and essays you really love. In the beginning, our tongue will ache as fuck, but your pronunciation will really get better. Even if there`s no one near to point your mistakes.*

If you see a word with abstract meaning, immediately make a collocation with a “simple” noun. e. g. Instead of learning what “to accustom” means, learn something like “I accustomed myself not to cry because of the high taxes” or “I`ve never been accustomed to working hard and I`m not going to start”

Watch the useless and strange videos on YouTube in your target language. There are many advantages in the crap like “Get Ready With Me” or “What is in my back?” First of all, they all contain almost similar phrases and word collocations. Watch 5 GRWM-videos and you`ll know for sure how to say “Hi, guys!”, “make-up”, “lipstick”, “really good” etc. Secondly, vloggers typically talk as if their audience is full of idiots. They repeat the same phrases dozens of times. And that`s! Don`t hesitate to feel foolish for 5 or 10 minutes straight. Surprisingly, the most unintellectual content will make you more competent and actually intellectual.

Korean Grammar -(으)ㄹ까 하다 - “I’m thinking about…” “I’m planning to...”

Notes - 메모

This one - it’s pretty simple and no long explanations needed. You can use -(으)ㄹ까 하다 when you want to give information about something you are planning to do or you thinking about to do in the future. These plans are not set and can be changed, they are pretty vague. You might come across the pattern -(으)려고 하다 with a similar meaning but -(으)려고 하다 has a stronger intention as -(으)ㄹ까 하다. 

Grammar - 문법

Verb stems ending with a consonant + -을까 하다

Verb stems ending with a vowel + -ㄹ까 하다

Past Tense -(으)ㄹ까 했다

can’t be used with interrogative, imperative or future tense

Sample sentences / 예문

커피대신 차를 마실까 해요. I’m thinking about drinking tea instead of coffee.

그 영화를 볼까 했어요. I thought about watching that movie. (but didn’t)

친구들과 같이 저녁을 먹을까 해요. I’m thinking about eating dinner with a friend.

내년에 서울에 여행할까 해요. I’m thinking about traveling to Seoul next year.

안녕~ how do you guys motivate yourself to learn? like i am sitting here in front of my notebook and my books and i really don’t know how to start. it’s so frustrating. especially when you feel like you make no progress at all.

~ㄹ/을 필요가 있어요/없어요 - To need to/to not need to

Sharing a similar concept as ~ㄹ/을 수 있어요/없어요, by adding ~ㄹ/을 필요가 있어요/없어요 to the end of a verb/adjective stem it creates the meaning of ‘to need to/to not need to’. ~ㄹ is added to verb stems that don’t have a 받침 while ~을 is added to those that do. 

할 필요가 있어요 - To need to do it  할 필요가 없어요 - To not need to do it

먹을 필요가 있어요 - To need to eat 먹을 필요가 없어요 - To not need to eat

저는 물을 더 마실 필요가 있어요 - I need to drink more water 

저는 지금 잠을 잘 필요가 없어요 - I don’t need to sleep now 

저는 고양이에게 먹이를 줄 필요가 있어요 - I need to feed the cat 

저는 요리를 잘 할 필요가 없어요 - I don’t need to cook well 

저는 안경을 썰 필요가 있어요 - I need to wear glasses 

지금 그것을 할 필요가 없어요 - You dont need to do it now 

저는 학교에 갈 필요가 있어요 - I need to go to school

저는 오늘밤 숙제할 필요가 없어요 - I don’t need to do my homework tonight 

공부할 필요가 있어요 - I need to study 

저는 갈 필요가 없었어요 - I didn’t need to go 

이걸 끝날 필요가 있었어요 - I needed to finish this

Essential Vocabulary to remember

There are so many words in Korean, however, it is very hard to remember all of them. This is a list of words that I think are essential and that I should always remember. To memorize them just read this everyday. I’ll be adding more whenever I find new words, so keep checking this post for updates. Feel free to use this as a reference as well!

Greetings + Farewells:

안녕히 가세요: Good-bye! (to one who is leaving). Tip: 가 means go.

안녕히 계세요: Good-bye! (to one who is staying). 

수고하십니다: Hello! (to someone working)

수고하세요: Good-bye! (to someone working)

수고하셨어요: Thank you for helping me or Well done!

여보세요: Hello! or Hey there! (Hello on the telephone, or when peering into a dark house. Also means Look here!)

만나서 반갑습니다: Nice to meet you; nice to see you.

처음뵙겠습니다: Pleased to make your acquaintance.

또 뵙겠습니다: See you later! (Formal).

또 봐요: See you later! (Polite).

어서 오세요: Welcome!

들어 오세요: Come in!

앉으세요: Please take a seat/sit down.

어떻게 지내세요?: How are you doing?

잘 지내요: I am fine.

그저 그래요: So-so.

모든 것이 괜찮습니다!: It’s all good!

성함이 어떻게 되서요?: What is you name? (Formal)

나는 (insert country here) 사람이에요: I am (insert country here) person.

나 는(insert country + 에) 살고 있습니다: I live in (interest country here).

Apologies:

실례햅니다: Excuse me (for what I’m doing).

실례했습니다: Excuse me (for what I did).

실례하겠습니다: Excuse me (for what I’m about to do).

미안합니다 or 죄송합니다: I’m Sorry or Excuse me.

아니오, 괜찮아요: Not at all, it’s alright; No, thanks. 

Thank you + No problem

고맙습니다: Thank you.

감사합니다: Thank you.

천만에요 or 뭘요: You’re welcome! or Don’t mention it!

Good to remember if you’re ever speaking to a Korean person:

듣기만 하세요: Just listen , please.

따라 하세요: Please repeat (after me).

다 같이: All together.

다시 한번: One more time.

말하세요: Please answer.

다시 말씀해 주세요: Please say it for me again. Please repeat.

크게 말씀해 주세요: Please say it loudly.

천천히 말씀해 주세요: Please say it slowly.

한국말로 하세요: Please say it in Korean.

영어로 하지 마세요: Please don’t say it in English.

알겠어요?: Do you understand?

네, 알겠어요: Yes, I understand.

아니오, 모르겠어요: No, I don’t understand.
