things are bad, hard, and sad: 20 small actions to sprinkle into your life that might help

Things in the (so-called) usa are really scary and upsetting right now. I'm fairly sure you’ve heard about it, so I won’t go into lots of detail. But just to make sure it keeps being documented, I will say that in the past few months (among many other heinous actions taken by the trump administration), tens of thousands of immigrants were targeted, detained without due process, locked in concentration camps, and deported by ICE regardless of citizen status or criminal record. Plus, a bill recently passed that will almost certainly gut the social safety net (Medicaid/care, SNAP) in order to give tax breaks to the wealthy.

Things are rough for most of us. Especially so for people of color, trans people, women, and disabled people.

This zine will hopefully give you some ideas for small actions you can take to make things a little better. I think they can add up over time, and if lots of us do them, things will start getting better on a large scale.

Drink a biiig glass of water.

Introduce yourself to your next door neighbors and swap phone numbers. Offer them any resources you’re comfortable sharing.

Text someone you haven’t heard from in a while and say you hope they’re doing well. Send a meme if you have one!

Search on the internet for a local calendar of events in your area. Browse and look into ones you’re interested in/available for.

Save the phone number for reporting ICE in your area. Consider filming for others’ safety if you see them in your community.

Mow your lawn a little taller (or not at all).

Start a garden (or daydream about it, or volunteer at one).

With permission, give a person you know a hug, or an animal some pets.

Wear a medical mask if you have a transmissible respiratory illness and are out in public. Lots of places have them still available for free if you don’t have any.

Say hello to a person who is living on the street. Offer them any resources you have available (spare cash, cold/frozen water bottles, fresh cut fruit, a ride, a printed bus route). Ask them what they need and see if you can get it for them.

Carry naloxone and mentally prepare yourself to use it if you see someone who has overdosed.

Learn how to patch your torn clothes (and/or lengthen pockets).

Search the internet for any recurring protests or volunteer opportunities in your area. 50501 Movement is a resource, but there may be some you can only hear about in the news or by word of mouth.

Learn what plants in your area are named. Remove invasive plants when you see them.

Put something you don’t use anymore on freecycle.

If you have printer access, print a poster from linktr.ee/flyersforfalastin and put it on a bulletin board or wheatpaste it.

Write a letter to a prisoner.

Check something out from your local library, or use their InterLibrary Loan system. Many libraries have DVDs and things like tech and cookware (aka Library of Things) in addition to books.

why does nuzleaf have nipples

I guess you could argue it is a sort of human-shaped pokemon, and, similarly to a lot of fighting-types, it is designed in a way that kind of looks like a shirtless dude out for some training

but most of said fighting types (like the machop line, and tyrogue) do not have nipples (…also nuzleaf is a dark-type. but it’s designed a lot like a fighting type. that’s a discussion for another day I guess)

most of the human-like pokemon that DO have nipples or breast-like features are designed to look like women. jynx is a classic example of that

and jynx doesn’t even really have nipples so much as�� vaguely breast-like shapes on its chest. with clothing attached and everything. this raises a lot of anatomical questions about jynx that I am not prepared to answer.

the point is, jynx is supposed to look like it has boobs.

the same is true of swanna

which is kind of ridiculous since swanna is clearly a bird, not a mammal. then again nuzleaf is a PLANT so let’s hold off on the biological necessity part of the equation for a little while longer. (also I’m pretty sure swanna is supposed to be based off of a booby bird which makes its design punny so it gets a pass)

the point is, jynx and swanna have boobs that are for decoration. they’re just supposed to look like boobs.

now let’s talk about boobs/nipples that do serve a biological function

this of course brings us to miltank

miltank is the “milk cow pokemon”. it produces moo moo milk. therefore, its milk-producing tits are impossible to ignore in the context of its design and lore.

also, miltank without an udder would look… very naked and weird. you couldn’t make a change like that to miltank’s design without people noticing. the same could probably be said about jynx or even swanna

this is not true of nuzleaf’s nipples. nuzleaf’s nipples are only a very small detail in its design. just two dots. in ruby/sapphire they probably only took up one pixel each. gamefreak could’ve easily taken away the nipples in a later generation and you wouldn’t notice any difference unless you knew what to look for.

and they have changed pokemon designs before without anyone really noticing. for example, arbok used to have fancy designs on both sides of its hood. you can see that on its back sprite in the gen 1 games.

but for whatever reason this design choice was abandoned and now ever since gen 2 (and parts of gen 1, really) the back of arbok’s hood has been a solid purple (or gold, if we’re talking about the shiny version)

and there are plenty of other examples of pokemon designs changing over time. most notable is the gradual slimming-down of pikachu. and quite a few other subtle changes to pikachu’s design since gen 1.

but nuzleaf had nipples when it debuted in gen 3 and it has had nipples ever since

kangaskhan, the pokemon that is essentially designed around it being a mother, does not have anything resembling breasts or nipples

and yet nuzleaf, the plant-based pokemon, has vestigial male-presenting nipples. an attribute that it does not have in common with any other masculine-looking human-like pokemon

i’m just. baffled by them.

My friend and I made some variant forms! She designed Roggenrola and Boldore :D

#524 Roggenrola: It has a jolly disposition, bouncing around caves using its psychic energy. Its hexagonal ear is sensitive to sound which fuels its psychic power. When it releases this stored energy, it makes a pleasant ringing sound.

#525 Boldore: Its stored energy has sharpened the crystals on its head, enhancing its psychic power. The cavities in its limbs can shoot powerful sonic waves, which can leave a high-pitched ringing in its victim’s ears.

#526 Gigalith: This Pokemon is usually found in hidden, meditative caves. Whenever it takes a step, it makes a low-pitched, bell-like sound. Under the night sky, it uses the power of the cosmos to release psychic waves capable of shattering mountains.
