lotf analysis time - parental roles

Even though it was Piggy who took on a more caregiver-like role to the littluns, I think it's very interesting how Ralph and Jack are often likened to dysfunctional mother and father figures--period typical gender roles still implied. Even their fights remind me of my parents', it's uncanny.

The compromises, the pointless bickering, the stark difference between their methods of managing the other children. Ralph is doing all the working and scolding--demonized for it, but Jack is like the fun, absent father that "comes to the rescue" and saves the kids from their lectures (outbursts of fury here and there).

I'm not sure if it was Golding's intention, but he somehow found a way to degrade his generation's paternal customs while appraising maternal ways. Like--and I know I am stretching this--we'd be better off under matriarchal guidance.

And I'm not saying that the situation--regarding mother and father--couldn't be reversed, I am simply going off the time period (the 50's were literally known as the era of the "happy homemaker"). Anyone is capable of being a bad parent, no matter if they're the breadwinner, homemaker, or both.

Perhaps Golding was bitter. he experienced 2 world wars in his lifetime, served in one, and both were started and ended by men. Elizabeth II had also just been crowned 2 years prior to the book's release, the first queen of England in 51 years.

"Boys" in the lotf was just a metaphor for mankind as a whole, EVERYONE included. Someone had to take on the motherly role--just like someone had to take on a fatherly role--, I feel as though that was inevitable given the themes of the book. It's arguable that Piggy grew into that role, but I would say he was more of a nanny than anything. Ralph is the one who minds the littluns night terrors and worries that their island isn't "a good island"--carries that emotional labor. Ralph is the one who arduously builds the shelters when few will help because he wants to provide at least some comfort and sense of security like a roof to sleep under. Ralph is the one who nurtures without violence.

In contrast to Ralph and Jack, Ralph and Piggy--their spots as mother or father interchangeable--could be interpreted as the best example of healthy, functional parents. Piggy is a voice of reason (as well as Ralph), wise and insightful, and ralph emotionally engages and physically leads. Their dynamic mimics co-parenting roles, especially when they both try to bring order to the tribe and unite the children. Together, they form a parental unit.
