"Angel... are you there?"
“Okay, okay, I just thought of a question.” Everyone turned to Noelle. “Why are you possessing Kris?” As the words escaped her mouth, Kris’s heart began to pound faster. They gulped, fearful. Before they could suggest a new question, the planchette was already moving, taking no time to think about its answer. Susie and Noelle blurted the letters out as they came. “I-” “D-” “K…?” The girls stared at each other puzzled. Susie scoffed. “Aren’t gods supposed to, uh, know everything?” The planchette continued to move, and Noelle recited the remaining letters. “A-S-K-K-R-I-S,” she slowly stated. “Askkris? Like those little star symbols?” Susie glanced off confused. “Ah, no! It’s saying…” Noelle turned toward Kris, who was now slouched over with a guilt-stricken expression. “...ask Kris."
---
Kris, Susie, and Noelle learn that Kris is being possessed by the Angel, the god of their religion. Noelle has an idea on how to talk to it, though it doesn't exactly go as planned.
Chars: Kris, Kris' Red Soul/Angel, Susie, Noelle, Dess (mentioned) Tags/Warnings: Crack Treated Seriously, Hurt No Comfort, Kris's Red Soul is the Angel, Ouija Words: 2.6k
---
After their adventure in the Flower King dark world, three Lightners sat in Noelle’s bedroom, reminiscing about their adventure. A lot had happened. Kris had accidentally revealed that the soul was a separate being from them, and, now that everyone was free from danger, they expected an endless amount of questions.
The three teens lounged around the room, none yet having the courage to bring up the topic. Though as a quiet, waiting to be filled, overtook the room, Kris’s stomach turned. They knew what was going to be brought up next.
“So that, uh, soul thing…” Susie began, trying to ease into the topic.
Kris bit their lip. Oh, Angel, where was she going to take this? Though they quickly cringed. It felt so strange using that expression now, given that Ralsei had just told them that their soul, the being that puppeteered them like they were just a slab of meat,  was the Angel.
It seemed Susie didn’t notice their growing discomfort as her eyes darted across the room, before eventually settling on them as she spoke those next words. “For the last 3 days, you’ve been possessed by… god?”
Kris let out a heavy breath, half-relieved, half-dreadful. “Apparently.” It wasn’t the worse of questions, so they figured they’d give some sort of answer. “I knew I was possessed by something, I just hadn’t realized it was the Angel.”
Noelle’s giggles came from the other side of the room, next to where Susie sat. “Wow! That’s… really creepy.” From an outsider’s perspective, her excited expression didn’t quite match the words she was saying, but Kris knew that Noelle’s excitement about spooky things was nothing unusual.
She muttered under her breath, “Gosh, even though that’s really weird, I wish the Angel blessed me with that experience.”
Kris’s jaw clenched, they wanted to move it to say something, but they couldn’t.
Concern flickered across Susie’s face.  “Uhhh, yeah let’s not wish for that.”
Their body relaxed as they heard Susie attempt to shoot down that idea, though Noelle just kept going.
“Oh goodness, I could only imagine what it’s like, Kris!” She rolled into her bed, gazing at the ceiling in wonder. She turned over to face Kris, who seemed to quite enjoy staring at the floor, as she cheekily spoke, “I mean like, did it whisper to you answers to life’s greatest mysteries or anything?”
Their leg bobbed up and down incessantly, growing in speed. “No, never. I don’t even know if it can.”
Noelle gasped. “You mean you’ve never talked to it?”
Susie, also being shocked, added on, “You never tried to give it a pencil or anything?”
Kris turned away and groaned, their leg tapping ceasing. “I don’t think it would be able to write if it even wanted to; it can’t control my fingers.”
“What does it control then?” Susie inquired.
Great. They gritted their teeth. More questions. Their eyes darted across the room as they were deep in thought, trying to think of what information was okay to reveal.
A shaky breath escaped them as they began, “It controls what direction I walk, but the individual steps are all my own.” Kris swung their legs as they sat, demonstrating control over them. “It also makes certain decisions for me, though why it makes some decisions and not all of them is still a mystery to me.” They placed their hand on their chin, deep in thought.
“It could... move around as a little red heart — as a soul — outside of my body sometimes.” Their lips curled inward. “It, uh, got… loose… yesterday. At this house, actually.” Their mouth tugged asymmetrically into a nervous smirk. “It was knocking over things in Dess’s closet.”
They paused, rubbing their neck. “I’m sorry about that, Noelle.”
Noelle didn’t respond, she was still processing all that was being said. Though a lightbulb went off in her head as she gasped and perked up.
She hopped off her bed and rummaged under it.
“Aha!” Everyone in the room leaned over to see the wooden rectangle she was pulling out. The chipped board was covered in black markings. Once she had brought it out into the light, it was clear to everyone what it was.
“Seriously…” Susie chuckled. “A Ouija board?”
“Whaaaat?” Noelle giggled along with her. “We gotta at least give it a shot!”
Susie doubled over with laughter. “Why do you even have that?”
“I like scary things!!” She blurted out red in the face.
Susie froze. “R… Really?” She blinked rapidly. “Huh… cool.”
Kris didn’t think communication with the demon Angel was possible, whether it be because that was just how the universe worked or it didn’t like them enough to talk to them, they didn’t know. They didn’t even know if they wanted to talk to it. Once it had gotten a chance to do so, it’d probably scold them, look down upon them. How dare you work with the Knight? Kris could hear its mocking voice perfectly in their head. Given how omniscient “gods” were supposed to be, it surely would know why. In this scenario Kris had devised in their head, it just wouldn’t care about their reasoning. It would laugh scornfully in their face, thinking they were a fool for trying to find her.
Kris found their body being pushed off the couch by none other than this Angel. It seemed they were being given no choice on whether they actually wanted to converse with it. They didn’t feel like putting up a fight as they begrudgingly accepted what was to come. “Let’s just get this over with.”
Noelle planted the board onto the ground. The three of them rushed to place their hands onto the planchette.
“So…” Susie’s glance shot between her two friends. “How do we start this, uh… seance?”
“Well, we have to make sure it’s here before we ask any juicy questions!” Noelle chirped.
She took a deep breath, hesitating before speaking. “Angel… are you here?”
The three of them looked down at the planchette apprehensively. It laid still, unmoving.
Susie gulped. “Hey, uh, I don’t think this seance-thing is working…?”
As expected, Kris thought to themself. It either can’t or won’t talk to me.
They started to lift their hands from the planchette, but before their fingers had broken contact with it, all of their hands began to move in unison. Everyone’s reactions erupted all at once.
Kris’s eyes widened.
“Oh my gosh!” Noelle yelled.
“Holy shit…” Susie’s jaw dropped.
The planchette moved towards YES.
Susie couldn’t stop muttering “Holy shit” under her breath.
Noelle tried to regain her composure. “Oh, Angel, I, um,” she stuttered awkwardly. “Oh my gosh, I don’t even know what to say.”
Even if she didn’t know what to say, Kris did. In those restless nights between their dark world adventures, they had thought long and hard about all the things they would say to the soul — most of them expletives, but still…
They cleared their throat, drawing attention from the two girls.
“What’s your actual name?” Kris didn’t feel like it deserved being referred to as a god, the Angel, and calling it the soul felt too intrusive, like it was a part of them. They wanted an actual way to refer to it.
“Ohh, Kris, that's a good question!” Noelle lit up.
The group patiently sat, staring down at the planchette. They waited, though unlike just moments ago, the planchette didn’t move. All of their eyes began to dart around the room, hoping that someone would speak up.
Cutting through the awkward silence, Susie remarked, “Uh, maybe it just doesn’t, like… have a name? Well, besides ‘Angel.’”
“Wouldn’t it have just spelled ‘Angel’ then?” Noelle responded sheepishly. “Maybe it just didn’t like the question?”
Before they could contemplate further, the planchette began to move. As the letters came, everyone said each one out loud.
“N-”
“A-
“M-”
“E-”
A pause.
“I-”
“S-”
As they said each new letter, the group grew more and more excited. They watched as the planchette spelled out a name unfamiliar to them.
The teens sat still as they took that info in.
Again, Susie was the first to speak up. “Huh… I didn’t think god would have such a… normal name.”
“I didn't even think it'd have a name besides ‘Angel.’” Staring intensely at the board, Noelle was flabbergasted. “I guess it just took it a minute to think, huh?”
Kris was deep in thought. It wasn’t the first time the soul — no, the Angel — hadn’t responded to them — them specifically. It made them wonder if the Angel could even hear them. No, no, that would be strange, wouldn’t it? It could hear Noelle and Susie and everybody else just fine. Hell, it could read people’s thoughts sometimes. Maybe it just… didn’t like Kris.
They sighed, a little dejected. “Yeah, Noelle. Maybe… maybe it just needed some time.”
The teens looked around at each other, waiting for the next person to pipe up with a question. That next person would be Noelle.
“Okay, okay, I just thought of a question.” Everyone turned to her.
“Why are you possessing Kris?”
As the words escaped her mouth, Kris’s heart began to pound faster. They gulped, fearful.
Before they could suggest a new question, the planchette was already moving, taking no time to think about its answer. Susie and Noelle blurted the letters out as they came.
“I-”
“D-”
“K…?” The girls stared at each other puzzled.
Susie scoffed. “Aren’t gods supposed to, uh, know everything?”
The planchette continued to move, and Noelle recited the remaining letters.
“A-S-K-K-R-I-S,” she slowly stated.
“Askkris? Like those little star symbols?” Susie glanced off confused.
“Ah, no! It’s saying…” Noelle turned toward Kris, who was now slouched over with a guilt-stricken expression. “...ask Kris.”
Kris’s breath got lodged in their throat. It felt like they were about to suffocate.
Susie’s eyes dug into them as she raised an eyebrow. “Anything we need to know, dude?”
Their chest tightened in a way that made it feel like their ribs were puncturing their lungs. “N… No.”
The planchette continued to move, spelling out “K-N-I-G-.” Was that damn thing forcing their hand? If that was the case, then…
Kris quickly changed their answer. “M-Maybe…?”
“Maybe,” Susie repeated, brow raising further up her face.
“Maybe…”
They tugged at their shirt sleeve anxiously, sighing. “I, uh, knew it was going to possess me.” Their throat constricted, but they managed to choke the words out. “I… agreed to it.” Dammit, why did I say that?  They pinched the skin of their hand — a slight punishment.
Across from them, Susie slowly nodded her head as she processed all of this revelatory info. “Why?”
Why had they allowed that? Kris turned their gaze to Noelle. Ah, of course. It was for her sister. They promised Mrs. Holiday they would do anything to bring Dess back. They just never thought it would go this far.
“It’s complicated.” They waved their hand dismissively.
Noelle gave a glance of sympathy toward them. “It’s okay, Kris. I like complicated.”
A palpable silence filled the room as Kris sat with all eyes on them. It made them feel exposed, naked. They didn’t like this. They didn’t like it one bit. Why the hell had they agreed to play with a ouija board?
They had already dug their grave though, hadn’t they? No point trying to turn back now.
Their voice was strained as they began. “A long time ago, I had made a promise.” They glanced around the room, worried of how the girls had reacted so far. As Kris saw the gentle expressions on their face, they only felt worse. They didn’t feel like they deserved to have such good friends — good friends they were hurting. It wasn’t just the betrayal. Working with the Knight was going to bring about the Roaring — an apocalypse. They were hurting everyone, and still, here Susie and Noelle were, being… nice.
They sighed before continuing. “And because of that promise, I agreed to be the cage, y’know? To help fulfil the prophecy?”
Noelle placed a hand on their shoulder, trying to be supportive, but Susie was growing a bit concerned for her friend. And not just concerned, but upset as well, as she could tell there was more to this story.
“Okay, okay, wait.” She held her hands up trying to pause the situation. “Fulfil the prophecy? Being ‘the cage?’ Promises to people?” Her teeth began to bare automatically. “You’re freaking me out here! You’re not telling us the whole deal. If this is important, then tell us, dammit!”
Kris’s face went entirely blank as they froze.
Susie clasped her jaw shut immediately, cursing herself between gritted teeth. She hadn’t meant for it to come out like that.
She mumbled an apology. “Look, I care about you and shit, okay?” Susie scratched the back of her neck as she tried her best to comfort them while maintaining her concern. “And Noelle and Ralsei too. If this is something to do with the prophecy, dark worlds, or hell, even just you being okay, we need to know!”
Kris tapped their foot, its tempo growing as their fear did. What was the most they could say that would provide very little information? What was the easiest way to shut up this conversation? They didn’t want her to actually know. If she knew, she’d never be able to look them in the eye again, and that pesky Angel would sit on their shoulder, taunting them for losing a friend that was never actually theirs.
Right, right, Susie was the Angel’s friend, not theirs, no matter how desperately they wanted her to see them.
The silence was growing too long, they had to say something. “I just— I don’t know.” Their fingers reached up to pinch their forehead. Dammit, dammit! What were they going to say? “I… I had a… really close friend when I was younger who… knew about the dark worlds.” Oh yeah. Mention Dess. Right in front of Noelle. What a great idea. They bit their lip. Hard. “That friend isn’t… here with us anymore.”
Noelle’s face dropped, and she froze. Out of the corner of her eye, Susie picked up on it, as well as Kris’s anxiety-ridden behavior. She cursed herself, realizing this was a sensitive subject that encompassed both of her friends.
Susie clenched her fists, digging her claws into her palm. Her guilt was oozing out of her, though Kris felt even more guilty for making her feel that way. She was rightfully concerned, Kris wanted her to be worried, but… they couldn’t allow that. Not now. Not until all of this was over.
“Dammit.” Her voice wavered. “Fuck… fuck!” She facepalmed, partly in frustration, partly to cover her face in shame. “My bad. You ain’t gotta explain anymore.”
An uncomfortable silence seeped into every corner of the room, as each teen sat rigid in their own disquiet.
Susie’s lips curled inward as she noticed the discomforting air that grew. “I…” She swore under her breath, blaming herself. “...Now the mood’s all weird.”
Noelle slowly nodded her head. “W-Well, we don’t have to play anymore if it makes you uncomfortable, Kris.” A smile appeared on her face, though it would twitch downwards, faltering.
“Yeah.” Susie sighed. “What she said.”
A resigned, though somewhat relieved, breath escaped Kris. “Maybe we can try talking to it again another day,” they said, though they had no intentions of actually doing so.
They didn’t think they’d ever want to talk to it again. Not after putting them in a situation like this, forcing their hand, all exposed for their friends to see.
When they got home, they were sending that soul straight to its cage.

Picture this. You are in the place of kris deltarune in this situation. You are on a weirdly shaped chessboard. 5 water coolers have jumped down from small towers and are currently chasing you. In the case that you slow down, they shall reach you and beat the everliving shit out of you. What do you do?
