i think the near-extinction of people making fun, deep and/or unique interactive text-based browser games, projects and stories is catastrophic to the internet. i'm talking pre-itch.io era, nothing against it.
there are a lot of fun ones listed here and here but for the most part, they were made years ago and are now a dying breed. i get why. there's no money in it. factoring in the cost of web hosting and servers, it probably costs money. it's just sad that it's a dying art form.
anyway, here's some of my favorite browser-based interactive projects and games, if you're into that kind of thing. 90% of them are on the lists that i linked above.
A Better World - create an alternate history timeline
Alter Ego - abandonware birth-to-death life simulator game
Seedship - text-based game about colonizing a new planet
Sandboxels or ThisIsSand - free-falling sand physics games
Little Alchemy 2 - combine various elements to make new ones
Infinite Craft - kind of the same as Little Alchemy
ZenGM - simulate sports
Tamajoji - browser-based tamagotchi
IFDB - interactive fiction database (text adventure games)
Written Realms - more text adventure games with a user interface
The Cafe & Diner - mystery game
The New Campaign Trail - US presidential campaign game
Money Simulator - simulate financial decisions
Genesis - text-based adventure/fantasy game
Level 13 - text-based science fiction adventure game
Miniconomy - player driven economy game
Checkbox Olympics - games involving clicking checkboxes
BrantSteele.net - game show and Hunger Games simulators
Murder Games - fight to the death simulator by Orteil
Cookie Clicker - different but felt weird not including it. by Orteil.
if you're ever thinking about making a niche project that only a select number of individuals will be nerdy enough to enjoy, keep in mind i've been playing some of these games off and on for 20~ years (Alter Ego, for example). quite literally a lifetime of replayability.

#^ no relation they just look nice#anyways i'm at that point where smth fun's (af) close enough that it's almost here but far away enough that there's still some waiting left#so it's like mannnn what do i do. besides finish refs#i have work (? it's not like a legit job but i'm doing smth productive for money so) tomorrow which is whatever#hmmmm idk. i always feel bad when i try to have a convo with a friend bc i remember that my life's not that interesting on the whole#which is fine! except for when i need to talk about it#yknow a few days ago. i was thinking about going back to review sequences from calc 2 bc those fucking beat my ass#like who the hell is doing that kind of math on summer break but also idk i kind of like calculus now. like not really but#it's kind of cool when you get into it.. my prof was talking about doing a calc 3 class next semester and asking who was interested#and i genuinely considered it even though i don't need it for my major but i realized i don't want to risk 2 math classes in a semester Lol#i'm so grateful for him + my hs calc teacher like you hear about so many teachers who just don't gaf but they both clearly enjoyed teaching#i'm sad about my hs calc teacher bc he also started teaching an astronomy class the year after i left and i would've killed to take that#with him. he always loved talking about it and i've always wanted to take a class for it it would've been so fun#my college has an astronomy class but it's at night so they can actually go and See stars and stuff#which should be even cooler but i live 30 minutes away and i don't like driving at night so :(#i thought about self teaching with the openstax textbook. maybe i'll do that one day#anyways. yea calculus is cool! i've always been decent with math but i never liked it that much#but i think that hs calc class helped me appreciate just how interesting it can actually be#physics too (which that guy ALSO taught btw like what the hell) like you get to see how it ties into LITERALLY everything#even if i wasn't very good at physics (my blank frqs will haunt me forever) i still try and appreciate that. stuff's cool :]

big fan of stories that, while undoubtedly being about the power of friendship, acknowledge that the power of incredible violence is just as important
the love was there. the love changed everything. the crowbar helped also

decentralize and clean up your life!!!
use overdrive, libby, hoopla, cloudlibrary, and kanopy instead of amazon and audible.
use firefox instead of chrome or opera (both are made with chromium, which blocks functionality for ad-blockers. firefox isn't based on chromium).
use mega or proton drive instead of google drive.
get rid of bloatware
use libreoffice instead of microsoft office suite
use vetted sites on r/FREEMEDIAHECKYEAH for free movies, books, games, etc.
use trakt or letterboxd instead of imdb.
use storygraph instead of goodreads.
use darkpatterns to find mobile game with no ads or microtransactions
use ground news to read unbiased news and find blind spots in news stories.
use mediahuman or cobalt to download music, or support your favorite artists directly through bandcamp
make youtube bearable by using mtube, newpipe, or the unhook extension on chrome, firefox, or microsoft edge
use search for a cause or ecosia to support the environment instead of google
use thriftbooks to buy new or used books (they also have manga, textbooks, home goods, CDs, DVDs, and blurays)
use flashpoint to play archived online flash games
find books, movies, games, etc. on the internet archive! for starters, here's a bunch of David Attenborough documentaries and all of the Animorphs books
burn your music onto cds
use pdf24 (available online or as a desktop app) instead of adobe
use unroll.me to clean your email inboxes
use thunderbird, mailfence, countermail, edison mail, tuta, or proton mail instead of gmail
remove bloatware on windows PC, macOS, and iOS X
remove bloatware on samsung X
use pixelfed instead of instagram or meta
use NCH suite for free software like a file converter, image editor, video editors, pdf editor, etc.
feel free to add more alternatives, resources or advice in the reblogs or replies, and i'll add them to the main post <3
