Some observations and guesses:
Clown and Ferre often fight for dominance—who is the better player, who wins, who is more liked, who owns who, even who is the top. They frequently argue and act on it (pvp). Ferre is usually the one provoking—he’s the one suggesting a contest to see who’s better, shifting around in pvp. Clown is the one who cannot accept being provoked; he has strong pride and a need to control the situation. In Clown’s closer relationships, he usually holds the lead, taking the higher position: he is Branzy’s dominant, Kaboodle’s guide and something like an older brother, and also Ros’s guide and protector. From his approach to close relationships, we can see that he tends to take the role of leader, provider, the one on top. This means that when Ferre provokes him, he won’t tolerate it and won’t hand over control. So the struggle continues endlessly. In these struggles, Ferre tends to pop champagne at halftime, while Clown tends to mock only after victory.
Interestingly, when interacting with others, Clown usually maintains an image—you could even call it a persona. He puts attention into this. Before he speaks, there is always a moment of thought. He gives off a layered impression of calmness, softness, and lethal danger. He has a certain atmosphere, like watching a movie where he is the final villain. At the same time, when Clown is with Ferre, it seems like he completely forgets this image—or rather, that he can hardly maintain it. Ferre is strong, Ferre keeps provoking him, Ferre is close to him. Clown rarely loses emotional control, but after just a couple of sentences with Ferre, his voice goes up. Sometimes Ferre hasn’t even done anything yet, and Clown is already angry. You could say that in a sense, Ferre’s mere existence triggers him, bringing out a side of him different from how he is with others.
This is a good thing, because Clown’s preference for relationships he can dominate shows his psychological defenses in social situations. Someone who always feels unsafe is the one who always tries to control. This also fits with his Asperger-related social struggles. In his relationship with Ferre, Clown doesn’t fully dominate (he is still in a very long-term fight), but he still chooses this relationship and often spends time with Ferre. This means his sense of safety with Ferre is not based on his own dominance—it means he is letting go of his usual defenses.
The person who provokes him the most is the one who makes him the least defensive, which is very interesting. My guess is: first, Ferre’s provocations are not malicious; second, provocation as an act has the feature of “the provocateur focuses their attention on the one being provoked, and gains that person’s attention in return.” Ferre’s long-term provoking can be seen as a high-intensity form of sustained attention, and Clown’s reactions give the same thing back. You could say the two of them are engaged in high-level mental sparring—how is that not a form of soul-bond? And I don’t know if this is an Asperger tendency, but at least as someone with Asperger myself, I am like this: I like strong emotional fluctuations, as long as they are safe. Ferre’s provocation is a very strong form of mental stimulation.
Ferre is like an older brother who would take anything out of your hands at any time or place and hold it up so you can’t reach it. He loves to mess with you, super annoying, but also loyal, reliable, caring—the one you can always count on. Clown, in this relationship, is like the younger brother competing with Ferre: on the one hand thinking Ferre’s behavior is childish, but on the other hand unable not to grab his things back. And when Clown starts yelling, his deep voice turns bright and clear like a teenager—to me, it’s so cute and funny.

Clown: At the end of season 6, I had this little character arc moment where I— I realized the, the mistake in my betrayal of Minutetech. And, in a sense, the— the— the...me throwing myself into Spoke constantly even though he had the mace hacks— and I was like, tryna, I was like macing him, but he kept turtle mastering, all that stuff...In a sense, that was like, trying to heroically sacrifice myself to like. Make it up to Minute, maybe as well. If I can help him take down Spoke...
(...)
Clown: ...maybe. Or maybe I was just after the prestige of killing Spoke while he was hacking! Could be either one, who knows...
