Stannis Baratheon the Iron Brother, King at the wall, Lord of the Nightfort

Okay, let's get this out of the way. I don't believe that Stannis is Azor Ahai, or any variation of the One who was Promised. His Lightbringer is clearly a fake, with Melisandre using a glamor that has no physical effect. Maester Aemon points out this discrepancy, and the square cut ruby in the swords hilt is very similar to the one Mance wears when Melisandre disguises him as Rattleshirt. He also fails to meet any of the requisites. He was not born in smoke and salt, and he has yet to awaken dragons from stone. I believe that Melisandre might have been guided to Stannis so that he would bring her to the wall, but his work in that is done.

As an actual ruler, Stannis still has a lot to learn that he seems staunchly opposed to. While his claim is the best in Robert's lineage, he carries himself with the self righteousness of a child who lost their favorite toy. He believes that by stating the truth, that people should believe and flock to his support. And when this doesn't happen he whines that his brother's were better loved.

His devotion to law above all else is somewhat admirable, and could be incredibly useful on a ruling council. But his own extreme beliefs about right and wrong make him difficult to trust as Master of Law. Even then, Robert gave Stannis the seat of his heir, and made him Master of Ships. Stannis' skin was simply to thin to ignore his little brothers jokes, or the perceived slight of losing Storm's End.

Stannis is at least somewhat hesitant to send people to his god through the flames. He delays sacrificing Edric Storm again and again, and while he rages at Davos for escaping the boy, it's more about the betrayal than actually losing the human sacrafice. And even when the march to Winterfell becomes hard, he has the sense not to burn the half of his host that believe in The Old Gods.

And when it comes to Stannis' shadow bastards, and his sexuality in general, my feelings are complicated. I don't know how much Stannis understands about the living shadows, and if he knows the exist at all. The show depicts Stannis fervently participating in the creation of the shadows, but the books are less clear about this. Melisandre hints at the need for seed, and alludes somewhat to her bed getting use when Stannis is around. This would be damning on its own, but Stannis shows zero interest in sex outside of this context. He is described as going to his wedding bed like a man going off to war. He only has one child believed to have been conceived after the first attempt. And he believes thar brothels and whoring should be outlawed. I struggle to see this man jumping into the sack with Melisandre, and the only reason he was so frigid before is because his wife's ugly. If sperm is required, and Stannis knows this, I can more easily imagine him mechanically finishing into a chalice and giving it to her for whatever need she has. If he doesn't know, Melisandre has plenty of ways to stimulate the body while the mind is resting.
