cottagecore les amis - strawberry farmer Enjolras meets city-boy Grantaire and everything is delightful. I can promise picnics, strawberry embroidered dungarees, YEARNING, pining and dreamy sunsets, baking and SOFT moments.
I’m ridiculously e x c i t e d for it!!

old French press be like: yeh I ship Enjolras and Grantaire

to roughyl translate, I found these while looking up Grantaire on the website Gallica, which is a French website filled with archives of old documents (press, literature, essays etc) that anyone can consult for free. It’s pretty awesome caus you can get an accurate view of what informations people consumed at the time. Let’s also note this article came out 50 years after Les Mis’ publication. link to the article (it’s page two)
Anyhoo, this article is from the 20th-ish century newspaper Comoedia and it’s a repertoire of fictional characters who fall under the term “The Devotions” (les dévouements), separated in different categories of attachment/loyalty.
Grantaire’s category is, literaly: “Devoted as a result of an unrealizable love.” as I said, it’s a rough translation. I’m a bit unsure. In this case, devotion is caused in consequences to a love that simply can’t happen, there’s a series of events building up a one-sided love which will, somehow, still result in commitment.
So to have Grantaire in this category was not that surprising tbh, and if you look up the two other characters at his side (who are both male, it is written here there’s “no equal female example”) Quasimodo and Butscha are both, in similarities with Grantaire, ugly men who seem to only have flaws but turn out to be quite ok and somehow lose themselves in the shadows of someone else. (I won’t elaborate but please correct me if I’m wrong)
Obviously, the interpretations are open, I was looking up for 19th century press opinions and interpretations of Enjolras and Grantaire’s relationship because if it causes so many debates now, I can’t see it not provoking debates at the time of publication too. I’m fond of the idea that a journalist could have published an article, or at least mentioned the thought in a random paper and, sadly, I found nothing aside from the above piece. But in a way I like that. How someone acknowledged Grantaire’s love for Enjolras as what it is: love. (without mentioning worship or faith) In my mind, this little piece of article acknowledges that Grantaire was romantically attracted to Enjolras. He didn’t fall into the category of “devoted because of frienship” or “devoted because of brotherhood”. It’s no bromance. We French are clear : un amour irréalisable is a heart tearing concept, we’ve all been there. Grantaire was friendzoned and some 20th century journalist recognized it.

Would anybody else be interested in a farmer!amis au? I know that’s incredibly niche, but I feel like it would work. It’s also something I wouldn’t have to research a lot (which is great bc I am.... lazy) since I’ve worked on farms my whole life.
Like imagine, Lamarque dies and leaves his great-nephew/grandson/whatever, Enjolras his tiny farm (yes I’ve played stardew valley) in the mountains. And the farm is sort of rundown and Enjolras is determined to get it up and running not to mention ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY! Because you KNOW he’d have so many issues with the industrial agriculture scene.
And anyway he needs people to help him run it so he recruits Combeferre as a veterinarian and Courfeyrac as a PR guy and Feuilly to help him manage it and etc until somehow the whole gang is on board! The possibilities are endless.
And R is a local who, despite being very skeptical about what they’re trying to accomplish, becomes friends with them because hey! Other openly queer people in rural Appalachia are rare! And this only spurs Enjolras to want to prove him wrong and show him that not only is sustainable farming possible but also so is acceptance!
Am I projecting as a queer from Appalachia? Absolutely. But like, I feel like there’s a lot of potential for the the amis! Would anyone be interested if I actually attempted writing this?

guys i’m having an emotion about grantaire again
i blame that post going around with the thing
but like, can we talk about how incredibly important it is that grantaire dies loved? because i think that that’s really incredibly important, like important enough i might start crying
because hugo’s thing has always been about how important and wonderful love is and how it can transfigure people into something much more wonderful and transcendent and amazing and you look at enjolras, who is so beautiful because he loves so brilliantly and powerfully and unflinchingly, and he is loved, he’s beautiful because he loves and is loved, there is so much love and a fair portion fo it comes from grantaire
can you imagine how beautiful they were when they faced down the guard? when they both were loving and loved? even with everything else gone, they’re loving each other and they know now
it’s transparent now, that they love each other and they must absolutely glow in that moment.
i’m sorry i’m just having feels again i’m sorry i’m sorry

hollllaa! I just finished writing my second fic so I thought I would share it! in this crazy year, having a fluff-filled enjolras/grantaire ballet au was the only thing keeping me going!
It’s a 75k, friends to lovers slow burn with LOTS of pining, social justice and les amis goodness!
If you would like to read it - it’s on AO3 here!
SUMMARY: Grantaire has been making ballet shoes in a Parisian factory for the last three years. He does not like ballet, and he especially does not like ballet dancers.
Then, in strolls Enjolras, the lead dancer of the National Paris Ballet company.
Somehow Grantaire gets himself tangled up in the first ever social justice ballet troupe, and is surrounded by dancers at all times. He should hate it, but he can’t stop being distracted by a certain dancer’s charisma and unfairly pretty eyes.
hope you enjoy! please let me know if you do! <33

I have so very nearly finished my second long E/R fic!
Please give it a read if you like artsy AUs, where Les Amis are just soft and sweet, and have SO much platonic banter. Also there is PINING, and FLUFF and lots and lots of LOVE.
Let me know if you read it - every comment makes me SO happy! :)

It’s Barricade Day!
We are NOT going to romanticize the current protests.
We are NOT going to use BLM for attention or as a springboard for talking about Les Amis.
We are NOT going to trivialize the issues we are currently facing in order to glorify the problems of fictional revolutionaries.
We ARE going to donate, protest, march, and sign every petition we come across - because if Les Mis taught us anything, it’s that we do not stand in silence when faced with injustice.
