3 Ways is a performative reading in which Isu Donggeon Kim revisits a previous work, a conference-fiction around the hormone estrogen. Having since begun hormone therapy, the artist shares a theoretical and personal reflection on the facets of gender transition, with historical and socio-political as well as cultural references, punctuated by a staging strong in metaphorical signs.

The Big Dipper, Ursa Major (Greater Bear), Great Wagon ....
The constellation of 7 stars in the Northern sky in known as many different names with mystical stories behind. The constellation played an important role in locating Polaris (North Star) and navigating directions.
Inspired by the Chinese myth of Hou Yi and the Greek myth of Chiron, I shot 7 arrows to the sky. The arrows hit the 7 stars.
The 7 stars fell down on Earth and became a new constellation.

In this collaborative performance, Tsuki was invited to dance under the charcoal installation of Ulrike Mohr. Tsuki is a dancer practicing Butoh, Ballet and Yoga. As she unfolds her presence in the space, I write about various subject matters around the conception this work.
The different standing points of her and I, the overlapping of our identities, opposing directions of our world views and experiences.
Starting with the skepticism toward the pseudo-scientific, spiritual mystification of charcoal often found in the advertisements of charcoal containing products, the projection of live-writing turns into a place for much more personal and political confessions.

Old work /I’m permeable/ is developed into a drag performance. Anaglyph 3d glasses are distributed to the audience during the lip-sync of “Walking and Falling” by Laurie Anderson. Then, the image of female body and face drawn in red and blue is revealed. Audiences are looking at the image through the glasses as if a magical illusion is created. Then the illusion is destroyed. Traditionally, drag is about creating the ‘female illusion’. But in this case was this illusion ‘real’? Was this illusion ‘female’? Was this even an illusion at all?

4 fictive characters are created out of the objects found in the backstage of the Karlshorst Theater. Each character has its own relation to the space and its own way of interaction with dices, which are used in tabletop role-playing games. Throughout the day, the performers play the roles that they have assigned themselves to. They treat themselves as something else. They become their own characters. They become the tools for the game.

Do mermaids wear sunscreen? With arising UV rays caused by climate change, our scales can’t endure raw sunlight anymore. We need a layer between our bodies and surrounding. This white cream enables us to distort our experiences. In our age, us mermaids need filter, layer, distance and dissociation from reality to survive. Nevertheless, we still need vitamin D !
인어들은 선크림을 바를까? 기후변화로 인한 자외선의 증가로 우리의 비늘은 더이상 직사광선을 견딜 수 없게되었다. 우리는 몸과 주변환경 사이에 막이 필요하다. 이 하얀 크림은 우리의 경험을 뒤틀 수 있게 해준다. 이 시대에, 우리 인어들이 살아남기 위해선 현실로 부터의 필터,막,거리 그리고 분리를 필요로한다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 우리는 여전히 비타민 D가 필요하다!

The word 'drag' can mean many different things.
1. verb : To pull along a surface or through a medium, sometimes with difficulty.
2. verb : To move (an item) on the computer display by means of a mouse or other input device.
3. noun : wearing of clothing of the opposite sex
Drag queen and Drag king deform the solid structure of identity. One put clothing on one’s own body as an avatar, just like dragging items into a folder on computer. The act of dragging someone on the ground can be a form of violence. Violence can solidify the power structure, but it can also collapse it. The moment of violence can deform our positions in the structure that restricts us. I want to capture the moment the pepper spray touches my face and deform my Drag.

Plastic that fills the ocean is causing the mutations and infertility in various organisms, including humankind. This is due to the Estrogen contained in plastic, also known as environmental hormone. Excessive amount of Estrogen causes mutation on organisms. However, there are also transgender people who take them on purpose to transform their own bodies. They are often treated as mutants by society. Are the mutations caused by excessive Estrogen “unnatural”? Is the division of sex something “natural”? Evolution of a species happen through various mutations and the natural selection. What if in the future, humankind is extinct and a new species with no division of sex appears on Earth? What would they think of the Estrogen pills that transgender people ingested? I supposed a fictional situation and did a conference about the investigation done by the future species on the Estrogen pills.
바다를 가득 채우는 플라스틱이 인류를 포함한 다양한 생물들의 돌연변이와 불임증을 유발하고 있다. 이것은 환경호르몬으로도 잘 알려진, 플라스틱에 함유된 에스트로젠으로 인한 것이다. 과도한 에스트로젠은 유기체에 돌연변이를 일으킬 수 있다. 그러나, 스스로의 신체를 변형하기 위해 고의로 에스트로젠을 투여하는 트랜스젠더 개인들도 있다. 그들은 흔히 사회로 부터 돌연변이와 같이 대우당한다. 과연 에스트로젠으로 인한 돌연변이는 “부자연스러운" 것인가? 과연 성의 구분은 “자연스러운” 것인가? 종의 진화는 다양한 돌연변이와 자연선택으로 발생한다. 만약에 미래에 인류가 멸종하고 성의 구분이 없는 새로운 종이 지구에 나타난다면 어떻게 될까? 그들은 트랜스젠더 개인들이 투약했던 에스트로젠 알약에 대해 어떻게 생각할까? 이 가상의 상황을 가정하고, 미래의 종에 의해 행해진 에스트로젠 알약에 대한 조사에 관해 강연한다.

How to embody the most mythical female character in the history of contemporary art? With this performance, i impersonate "The Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelors, Even", the legendary work of Marcel Duchamp. The Bride of Duchamp is an allegorical woman, a four-dimensional creature and the queen of signs. The performance incorporates the elements of "The Bride ...." as a garment, attached to the body with the power of the magnets, which evokes the concept of electromagnetic field and the fourth dimension. By this pseudo-scientific and occultist ritual, I embody the femininity in an unconventional way. I try to be a woman allegorically through the game of signs.
어떻게 현대미술사의 가장 신화적인 여성의 존재를 체현할 수 있을까? 난 이 퍼포먼스를 통해 마르셀 뒤샹의 전설적인 작품 “그녀의 독신자들에 의해 발가벗겨진 신부, 심지어”로 변신한다. 뒤샹의 신부는 우의적인 여성이며, 4차원의 생명체이며 기호의 여왕이다. 이 퍼포먼스는 “그녀의 독신자들에 의해 발가벗겨진 신부, 심지어" 의 요소들을 자석의 힘으로 몸에 고정되는 의상으로써 끌여들인다. 자석의 존재는 전자기장과 4차원을 상기시킨다. 이 사이비 과학적인 오컬트 의식을 통해 난 여성성을 관습적이지 않은 방법으로 체현한다. 난 기호의 놀이를 통해 우의적으로 여성이 되고자 한다.

This installation is composed of objects that I used in my previous performances. The four objects recalls the four fundamental elements, which are frequent in the occult rituals. The concept of ready-made allows the creation of new identities and meanings of objects according to context, situation and direction. This installation is activated by the end of the performance "4th dimensional transexual operation through ritual of (not) being at once". “Fountain”, the first ready-made in the world, is summoned by the gesture of urination with the modified direction. By this evocation, I release myself from the identity that is assigned to me by the external world. Something that was not here, is now here.
이 설치는 나의 예전 퍼포먼스들에 이용된 물건들로 구성된다. 이 4가지 물건들은 오컬트 의식에서 자주 등장하는 4대요소를 연상시킨다. 레디메이드의 개념은 맥락,상황 그리고 방향에 따라 어떤 물건들에게 새로운 정체성과 의미의 창조를 가능하게 한다. 이 설치는 퍼포먼스 “있음과 동시에 없음의 의식을 통한 4차원적 성전환 작용”의 끝을 통해 활성화된다. 최초의 레디메이드인 “샘"은 방향이 변경된 배뇨행위를 통해 소환된다. 이 소환의식을 통해 나는 세상에 의해 나에게 배정된 정체성으로부터 자유로워진다. 이곳에 없었던 뭔가가 지금은 있다.

After the terror attack at Orlando night club on June 12th 2016, a Korean journalist said, "There would be no Korean victims because it was a homosexual nightclub." I asked myself, “If I died there, would my death be invisible death?” Visibility is an important issue in the queer activism. The visibility of the queer population is considered the necessary political power. However, I imagined "What if I reborn as a drag queen with the gift of invisibility?" Since the queer population is often invisible in society, would it be possible to turn this invisibility into potential power?
2016년 6월 12일, 올란도 나이트 클럽 테러 이후, 한국의 한 리포터가 말했다 “테러장소가 동성애자 나이트클럽이었기 때문에 한국인 피해자는 없을 것으로 예상됩니다.” 난 스스로에게 물었다, “만약 내가 그곳에서 죽었다면, 과연 나의 죽음은 투명한 죽음이 될까?” 가시성은 성소수자 인권운동에서 중요한 이슈이다. 성소수자 인구의 가시성은 중요한 정치적 힘으로 여겨진다. 하지만, 난 상상해보았다 “만약 내가 투명인간의 힘을 가진 드랙퀸으로써 부활한다면?” 성소수자의 존재가 대체로 사회에서 비가시적인 상황에서, 이 비가시성이 잠재적인 힘으로 전환될 수 가능할까?

Visitors try on the raincoats, consisted of 2 layers of images. With 3D glasses, the illusion created by superimposed layers of images appear and disappear according to the gestures of the wearer. The day of opening, I disguise myself in an exaggerated Asian style, wearing the Asian costume that is printed on the raincoat. I hide in an illusion of low quality, running away from the representation of high quality .
관객들이 2겹의 이미지로 이루어진 우비를 입는다. 3D 안경을 통해 이미지의 겹침을 통해 만들어지는 환영이, 우비의 착용자의 움직임에 따라 나타났다 사라진다. 오프닝날, 난 과장된 아시아의 스타일로 분장한다. 내가 입고있는 아시아 코스튬은 바로 우비 위에 프린트되어있는 이미지이다. 난 고화질의 재현으로부터 도망쳐 저화질의 환상 속에 숨는다.
