Way too long (900 word) rant about how I feel the writers handled Scandalabra/Jon’s character poorly and how he doesn’t feel like a coherent character. Tl;dr NO you are not a fake fan for liking Scandalabra (or Jon) more because the treatment of his character is just so odd and not consistent at all
Goes into spoilers and stuff
To understand how his character (post Jon reveal) was derailed, I feel I must look at the initial reveal, which I think was actually written well and established three important things about his character. First, it presents a problem with his character that is set up to be fixed through an arc: he is insecure about his mediocrity and status as a counterfeit. This quite obviously sets him up to accept this mediocrity or find a way past it through merit, or at the very least, find a healthier coping mechanism. It’s clear that whatever perspective/character issues that motivated him to take on the ‘Scandalabra’ personality are deeply rooted, given he’s been putting on the act for everyone for who knows how long. Second, it establishes that, though Jon and Scandalabra may seem vastly different, they notably share characteristics because they are still the same person and are not motivated by split personalities or something akin to Timothy’s character. Think the index fingers pressing together, “reminding you how he used to present to you,” or him “getting off on the relations around the house.” These are shared between the personalities, telling the player that Scandalabra is at least somewhat an exaggerated, extravagant version of the real Jon. Lastly, as he introduced himself as Jon Wick, that is IT with the John Wick references. He isn’t presented as a parody of John Wick aside from the name. This makes his realization ending come completely out of left field.
To start with the first and third points, his ending made absolutely no sense to me (character-wise, that is. It is also generally confusing, but that isn’t much of a gripe). There’s no character development relating to him dealing with his mediocrity (except for when you tell him you like Jon more. more on that later), so the player expects it to be fleshed out in his realized ending. Instead, he is just given a power and goes to fuck off to be a John Wick parody. Yes, him kicking counterfeiter ass is cool and relates to his nature as a (former) counterfeit, but it literally does not address the MAIN ISSUE with his character that was established from the reveal. He doesn’t accept his mediocrity or push past it through merit, he is just gifted a power by the writers. If anything, it seems like Jon Wick is just a new persona that he’s forced to take on instead of accepting himself, which is profoundly unsatisfying (in a way that doesn’t feel intentional like some other endings. Jean Loo comes to mind). He just forgets about his main struggle entirely and becomes a parody. It is shallow, frustrating, and confusing because he wasn’t established to be a parody whatsoever, besides the name. But now his deeply-rooted insecurities are dashed to be John Wick. It’s cool, but it just isn’t the character that was established at all?? Where is the character we set up?? Please
For the second point, which is probably the most confusing to talk about, after the Jon reveal, the two personalities deviate to degrees that make it seem like they aren’t the same person, even though they objectively are. In some cases post-Jon reveal, it’s clear Scandalabra is a persona or simply a means to have fun (such as the times you see him interacting with Beverly or Betty), but, the more you talk with either of this, it gets more muddied and confusing. To me, the way they treat each other progressively gets less realistic. Scandalabra does not consider a new identity after being realized, and Jon similarly does not consider pursuing a similar persona once being realized (even though he does play Scandalabra post Jon reveal so it’s clear it’s part of him to some degree). Unless Jon is actively playing Scandalabra, I feel the similarities between the two personalities kind of stop after the reveal. Most of this is because of a lack of Scandalabra-y traits so it’s difficult to talk about, but a glaring difference that confuses me most is how Jon treats sex.
It’s baffling to me how casual he is about it to the point where it’s his opening line when you talk to him post-love route. And yes, I know Scandalabra is a huge freak so I’m aware he does bring up sex a LOT, but his attitude towards it is completely different. The player, if they pursue the love route, is his only friend so it’s apparent they are very dear to him, and even then he says that the actual “deed” ruins the magic of the “unmet need” if they ask him about it. Both of these attitudes would be completely fine in a vacuum but the fact that his treatment of something so intimate to his ONLY CLOSE COMPANION is drastically different is very confusing
On the topic of how he treats sex, the most frustrating interaction with Jon is when you tell him you prefer Jon over Scandalabra. As was established, this is his main insecurity that motivated him to take on Scandalabra in the first place. This should be a pivotal character moment. It disproves the fact that he’s worthless or whatever he thought about himself before. It should open up a meaningful interaction, but it has no weight to it at all!! He’s like “okay yeah you can come over and we can fuck anytime” and the player is like “the other guy was too much” and that’s IT and it isn’t mentioned again??? I feel this completely loses the realism and potential relatability of Jon/Scandalabra
and YES it is that serious shut up
