Korean Mythology: Goblin

Although it’s been about 2 years since Goblin (쓸쓸하고 찬란하神 - 도깨비) was released, it’s still a favourite of mine and still confuses my friends because of some scenes relating to the Korean mythology! So in this post, I’ll be explaining some scenes or characters that may have confused you!

This post isn’t that long so enjoy! And if you have any questions or anything you want to know about Korea’s culture, please let me know! :)

Grim Reaper

In Korean culture, a name is written in red ink only if you wish for that person to die or if they are dead (I still never write names in red tbh). Korean names all mean something and have their own hanja version. This explains why the Grim Reaper carries around name cards with a person’s name written in red ink and in hanja!

You can also see that the Grim Reaper is always in black; this is because black is the colour which is used to mourn the dead in funerals and also just represents death alongside red. In one of the scenes, Ji Euntak (the goblin bride) is afraid to tell her name to the Grim Reaper. One of the reasons why she was afraid was because Koreans believed that if the Grim Reaper called your name 3 times, you would die! It’s also believed that they don’t have names; hence the reason why they’re all called Reaper Kim.

The Goddess of Childbirth and Children (삼신할매)

It seems like a lot of people were confused about her character, but she is a goddess of childbirth and children! She protects and looks over children until they’re 10! This is why when ever a child needed help, she was there (she was the taxi driver for the girl, she went to the hospital to look after a sick boy).

The Goblin

In Korea, they believed that goblins (they look quite different to western goblins) carried around a club and when they hit the ground with it, they could summon anything they wished (usually gold bars).

Do you think they have a large amount of stock for the Official merch (not the LY tour merch) ? Like the army bomb v3, the slogan etc ? i think the army bomb doesn’t run out! it hasn’t for any of the days i’ve attended and they still usually have stock at the end of the shows too but i’m not sure about the slogan ;;

would it be weird if i take my suitcase with me to the merch line ? or have you seen someone else do it? LMAO I cant check in till afternoon and i cant leave my suitcase in the hotel so :( i dont wanna miss merch, but i also dont want to be the only odd one / weird one out with a suitcase LOL BUT is it even allowed to take a suitcase to the merch line, or do you know/think that its forbidden? TT

nope, it wouldn’t be weird! there’s a lot of people who do that lol so no worries! my friend and i were dragging our foldable chairs around lol so it’s not weird or anything, gotta do what you gotta do!
