Tech Week: Rehearsal Bag Essentials
This week I’m doing a bunch of posts about tech week survival from a performer’s point of view. Today was our first day of tech week for our department showcase, a performance of the Kander and Ebb revue, And the World Goes Round. Today I’m gonna share what I have in my rehearsal bag for tech week.
Tights. Lots of tights. I can’t tell you how many times I have ripped my tights and needed an extra pair. It’s best to wear your ripped rehearsal tights until final dress and the shows, that way if you get caught on a set piece or in a zipper, you don’t ruin a new pair.
Hairspray- Obviously an essential. I don’t even think this needs an explanation. Make sure you get the extra strength kind. I got a can of Rave for Sweet Charity and my hair never fell out!
Healthy snacks- Tech rehearsals are loooooooong. I always get hungry during long rehearsals, and keeping snacks in your dressing room is your best bet to keep from biting cast members heads off. Things like mini bags of pretzels or Goldfish, granola bars, protein bars, or ziplock bags of carrots or celery are perfect take-five snacks.
A reusable water bottle- Stay hydrated! I have had many a rehearsal where someone has fallen or gotten dizzy because they aren’t hydrating. Reusable water bottles are awesome. Most rehearsal spaces will have water fountains, and with a bottle, you won’t have to run in and out of rehearsals. You should empty this bottle at least twice during a rehearsal.
Multiple pairs of shoes- Be it character, jazz, ballet, or dress, you should have more than one pair in your bag. I got my heel caught in a door and the strap of my semi-new Capezio character shoes was ripped off. I was shoeless for about two rehearsals during tech week. Expect the unexpected!
Tea Kit- The best cure for a sore throat during tech week is hot tea. Make sure you have sugar, honey, and all sorts of tea. Bring a mug and some hot cups to share with others in your dressing room.
Deodorant- Please for the love of God, deodorant. Sharing a dressing room with someone who’s never heard of Teen Spirit is rough. Be courteous and clean! It’s also possible that your costumer may charge you extra if your costume smells by the end of the week!
Well there you have it! I think that covers pretty much everything. During tech week, I’m pretty much on auto pilot. So long, and farewell!
