When Curly announces that they're being let go from the company during his birthday party, Anya's main worry is that she doesn't have anything in her savings account to fall back on.

If you were like me, maybe you just thought 'oh yeah nursing school probably ate up you're entire paycheck.' or maybe, if you're like my friend, you thought 'oh maybe she's just bad with money.' and, truly, the number one thing I love about the game is that it's so good at answering your questions that you haven't even thought of, because if you click on the "Don't be daft" poster in the lounge, at the very end it reads

And suddenly understanding clicks into place. If we're assuming a year long voyage is how long it normally takes to deliver something, someone is eventually going to be sick or injured enough to need a trip to medical, and if you're an inexperienced nurse, as the game implies, then quite potentially, you're going to slightly overtreat anything that's thrown at you because you don't want anyone to die on your watch.

Anya literally couldn't have saved up if she tried because if she tried to save her paycheck by not treating people she'd be fired and if she actually does her job she gets hardly anything.

And then the game goes further with it's whole, don't trust everything you see message, by making the first video people are made to watch be one about saving money from you're job, showing that to society, she'd be blamed regardless of what company policy is or what's happening to her because, well she should have saved herself, even though she literally couldn't. And that fits the game so well I think.
