Want to see something funny? Watch Prince Harry getting anxious as one too many men began to talk and crowd around his then fiance,, Meghan at one time. Harry was in “operation retrieve the princess” mode. He started to bounce on his toes and everything just watching them.

A simple truth that many people don’t like to talk about, is that even non-racist people are often uncomfortable with people of color occupying traditionally white spaces. This is part of implicit bias, and privilege. This is something that happens across all aspects of our society, but it is particularly noticeable with POC in the public sphere. It’s those moments where someone can’t seem to put into words why they don’t trust that a POC of color has achieved something on merit, or when folks are quick to ascribe negative intentions or motivations to what a non-white person has done or said, in the absence of past behavior that would support those conclusions. As a society we have preconceived notions about who does and doesn’t fit the brief for certain roles (career, social, or otherwise), and it impacts how we see & treat the people in them.
For Meghan Markle, now the Duchess of Sussex, this is something that has been beneath the surface of a lot of discussion around her, or media coverage of her. European monarchies are historically the whitest of white spaces, and to many people, and I’d include members of the press in this group, there’s something about having her those spaces doesn’t quite feel right, it’s uncomfortable. Often times those people will rattle off a list of their progressive credentials to say that you can’t possibly put them in that group;  and before you say it, no I’m not saying these people are racist, I’m saying that they don’t see the role that privilege plays in the conversation. One of the ways that this privilege manifests itself, is in the ways in which we talk about prominent POC, or more so the ways that people don’t know what to do with, & how to talk about. There is a persistent othering of POC in public roles, and there is a level of comfort with pointed criticism of POC in pubic roles that isn’t the same for their white peers. People are comfortable with saying things about POC that they would never think to say about their white peers, with not treating them with the same level of respect. This is compounded by the fact that mistreatment of POC is almost never met with the same negative repercussions or pushback, at least not from groups that are deemed to “matter.”
The media landscape is by and large dominated people who are white, and many of them of a middle or upper class background, this is even more true for those that are on the so called “royal beat.” I can think of at most 1-2 reporters on this beat that don’t fit that demographic. I know it’s accepted to think of whiteness as the arbiter of impartiality, but it would be silly to think that that the background of both the subject and the reporter don’t impact the coverage that you see. That’s why diversity in media is so important, it’s vital for a diversity of experiences and voices to be reflected in the media narratives that we consume. Anyway, that’s a bigger topic for another day. All this is to say, that for many of the people tasked with covering her, as a POC, Meghan will never “belong” and she’ll be treated accordingly. I sincerely hope for Meghan’s sake, that KP has people working on their team that acknowledge and understand this reality, because it’ll be vital to her ability to succeed as a public figure.

Royal Wedding ~ Prince Harry
I couldn’t breathe when Harry was asking for Meghan.  Him hoping that she was ok… He was so worried for her.  His face was flushed… To be away from his love for one night he couldn’t take it.  The love is real.  The break down to when he saw his bride is a beautiful thing.
