Ok so I've played a little more and Mark does say specifically that he does not like coffee. So that is out. But there's still enough there to interpret in whatever way you like.

staring at the wiki because I am having fic thoughts about Raj's two heart hangout event. (I am only on Summer Year 1 so there's a lot I don't know but hear me out.) And I know Mark is there some mornings, so I looked up stuff about him too to make sure my fic thoughts are accurate. But I noticed something when checking their pages.

Mark gets cocoa around midday on days when Raj is not there, but on days Raj is there, Mark shows up in the morning and gets coffee? (is that confirmed, or was the wiki just being vague about what he gets on those days?) And hangs around all morning AT the counter, like he's chatting with the people working there? AND they both volunteer at the animal shelter on rainy days?

Mark has his reasons for volunteering at the shelter of course. But Raj? Who (based on that litterbox leafblower line) isn't as deeply familiar with animal care? I get the sense that Raj started volunteering on rainy days when Raja's is closed, because of Mark. Mark, who is at Raja's every day, who gets coffee[?] (Raj's passion) on days when they are there, but chooses cocoa when Raj is not there. Obviously cocoa as a loved gift, but I passed by him one morning and he made a remark about trying something new or getting the same thing. Cafes usually only do one type of cocoa but many tipes of coffee. So with nothing to confirm or deny, it seems to imply that Mark is getting coffee on those mornings.

if he is getting coffee on the days Raj is there instead of his preferred cocoa... Why? Why, if not because the hot owner of the place is there, and probably has talked Mark's ear off about coffee a few times? Coffee is their life's great love. And in getting coffee specifically on the days Raj is there, either 1. Mark likes the way Raj does it best or 2. he gets coffee because Raj has convinced him. Mark, who is gruff and assertive. Who would have no problem saying no and getting his preferred cocoa. Has been convinced by Raj, who is awkward about being assertive. Mark could ONLY be convinced by Raj because of how passionate they are. And even then, Mark would be choosing to go along with it. Which, if he is getting coffee at all, he did. And continues to do every day Raj is there. And stay all morning to chat, standing by the counter.

But so far, they haven't talked about each other like other pairs of friends in Coral Island do. Mark isn't the sort, perhaps, and Raj's mind is always on their small business. But it also kind of reads as them being into each other. Seeing each other so much when they don't have to, choosing to be around each other, they are engaging with each other's interests. Voluntarily. Going out of their ways to do so. And keeping everything on the down low. Staying hushed. Keeping their conversations just between them. Like one might do when they are afraid that talking about their crush to someone else might make it obvious that there's a crush. Or simply because whatever happens between them is nobody else's business.

Having only just started playing Coral Island, one of my favorite things so far is how it is very blatantly non-western to the point that it is difficult (maybe even impossible? idk) to make your player character look 100% ethnically white. You can give yourself a white skin tone and nose and hair that you would commonly see on a white person, but there are so many good POC options (particularly the variety of asian eye shapes) that unless you set out to make your character look white, you will probably end up with a character that looks mixed, or fully POC! This is the first character creator I have encountered where I can make my first-ever OC (half black half japanese) look like what she might actually look like, to the point where there are options for different possibilities of what she could look like! No more searching for the one black option or the one asian option, I get to try several options and play around to pick which ones actually suit her!

So one thing I’ve noticed is that people’s DnD characters may vary but there is usually an underlying thread that they all have in common. This thread is typically related to what that person struggles with the most.

For instance, my betrotheds DnD characters: a bitchy warlock we had to bust out of two different pacts, a sassy barbarian, a reformed drow cultist, and a sunshine fighter cleric.

All these characters were wildly different but at their very core struggle was them grappling with their self worth. My betrothed struggles with their worth a great deal and even with different facets showing their characters all have that too.

Mine all tend to contend with different themes of loneliness and acceptance. Surprise, surprise, the little autistic gremlin yearns to have been met with more love and lasting friendships.

So we’re at breakfast. I am meeting a new friend of my betrotheds for the first time. It’s been twenty minutes since I’ve met this man. I say my theory. He laughs. He starts to describe a few of his characters but specifies that he often has healing aspects. He gives a very broad overview of their character arcs.

I ponder for a moment then said, “Would you like to have my assessment?”

He laughed, “Sure!”

“We’ve just met. It’s gonna get real.”

“Bring it on.”

“I think your struggle is that you feel you must offer something of value or service to people to be worthy of their love.”

His jaw dropped. His fork froze midway to his mouth. A potato fell. He stared into space as this sank in. Quietly he said, “Oh.”
