saw an elderly woman walking around with a tote bag whose design were the four AO3 fic category squares and she very excitedly asked if i was a reader or a writer bcs nobody else at the con had recognized it, and after telling her that i've been writing fic since fanfic.net, she solemnly nodded and explained that she'd been reading fic since "the days of personal websites" but that she only started writing fanfic when she was 47 and oh my god when i tell you that i genuinely teared up on the spot!!!!! like!!! HELL YEAH???? LITERALLY NEVER TOO OLD TO START WRITING. NEVER TOO OLD TO WRITE AND SHARE YOUR FIC.

her enthusiastic "i'm a very nice and bubbly person, i swear! but i love writing angst and major character death :)" nearly took me the fuck out.

A Defense of Unfinished Fic

I was talking about abandoned unfinished fics on Discord when someone said along the lines "FR bro I don't even read fic if not marked as completed" and that made me scootch my chair out to think a bit.

I think that's a little cruel, refusing to engage with a fic because its not 100% done yet.

Not only are people who do this missing out on great experiences, but its a refusal to engage with the author. It's refusing to acknowledge the author's effort in sharing something they worked a lot of hours on.

Like I get it. Nobody wants to take the cliffhanger or get mad that a fic they let live rent-free in they head disappeared into the ether, never to be updated again.

But that's part of life sometimes man. Sometimes stories are left unfinished. That didn't stop people from loving it as it was and taking inspiration.

Case in point is the manga Berserk. Highly influential series that inspired lots of others (e.g. Dark Souls, Elden Ring, even you guy's favourite Black Butler) amongst other things. The author Kentaro Miura struggled with juggling other projects and his declining health. He died before it was finished. But without this series being read and becoming popular, a lot of things we enjoy would have been really different. FF7 Cloud would have been carrying a little baby Fischer Price sword maybe idk.

So please, I invite you to engage with unfinished fanfic, whether it's one chapter done, or seven out of thirty planned. Give it your time and your comments.

Fanfic writers are not as visible a part of fandom community as artists or cosplayers. When a fic writer posts on social media or TikToks it doesn't make the same numbers as a cosplayer posting part of they fit or an artist posting a WIP.

But boys would cry, scream, throw up, piss they pants, shit and possibly die if Ao3 and FFnet were taken down permanently.

But interacting with the fic as its posted chapter by chapter? That's giving the writer that connection to the community one would give an artist or cosplayer when their work is still cooking.

I don't want this post to make people feel like they're being guilt tripped into participating in reading and commenting on fics. But there's really few ways I can convey how this is vital to the fandom ecosystem. It's like thanking the bus driver or washing your hands. If you don't wash your hands I will curse your crops.

Jesper woke up to a sweaty Wylan, sprawled on top of the sheets, hair plastered to his forehead. He cooed and pressed a hand to his forehead, not surprised to find it warm and clammy. Wylan grumbled and moved away from his touch, whining in pain.

Jesper snapped his fingers and a cool washcloth settled on the back of Wylan’s neck. Wylan sighed, eyes still closed and settled back down, this time not moving away from Jespers touch as he moved his damp bangs away from his face.

“My poor little mouse” Jesper murmured, pressing a soft kiss to Wylan’s forehead before getting out of bed and heading downstairs

Inej greeted him from the tabletop, head butting his hip once he approached.

Morning, I already prepared soup for the little mouse.

“Thank you, darling” he kissed her head before swiping a glass of water and soup for Wylan before heading back up, bumping into Kaz on the way.

I am going out to secure the barrier. Make sure he’s better soon. He’s rather annoying at the moment.

“I’ll tell him you hope he feels better”

Kaz didn’t answer, and flew out the window.

Jesper opened his door to see Wylan on his back, towel now on his head and face twisted in pain.

“Wy” Jesper called softly, setting the food down before crawling onto the bed, running his hand over Wylan’s shoulder.

Wylan woke slowly, blinking blearily at Jesper.

“Mm?”

“You feeling sick?”

“Mhm” Wylan turned on his side, nuzzling into the closest part of Jesper he could reach. Jesper ran a hand through his curls.

“Dr Jesper is here and ready to help.”

i know i yap about this a lot on this site but the way leigh bardugo writes jan van eck as an abuser is so so accurate and i love her for it. she did not have to go into such realistic depictions of the abuse wylan suffered---she really could've been like "eh yeah he's a shitty father and wylan is traumatized send to publisher." but doing it her way instead creates such a deeper character. she really understands how abuse like that works and it shows. having jan van eck use "logic" against wylan in addition to violence really adds the detail we need to understand how awful of a person he is, as well as understand why wylan thinks and acts the way he does. it makes the whole story of wylan hurt so much more and creates a way stronger character than one without such fleshed out trauma. it's also incredibly realistic to how, in real life, an abuser like that gets inside your head and manipulates you into believing certain things about yourself. all in all the more i think about it the more i appreciate leigh's writing and her attention to detail and realism. it's things like that that really elevate her writing.
