Moving on to Mapleshade's Vengeance, Appledusk! I wanted to make him look strikingly like Crookedstar, and so kept a lot of shapes similar between them. He also shares his grandson's light muzzle dark nose coloration. I then wanted to validate the 'dusk' suffix so gave him the wide band golden trait with blue tipping, since his children are probably black and blue based (pale browns and grey). Then the last thing to note about this design is that I noticed some designs online had appleseed markings on his chest and I played around with that idea for a while before accepting the appleseed superiority. Something something arsenic symbolism. I tried to hunt down the first occurence of that trait since it's pretty unique and common now, and I think it was originated by berrym00n here on tumblr, as they're the first post I can find with the trait. anyway! I listened to mapleshade's vengeance recently using text to speech and the speech reader mangled his name as apple doosk and that is how I will always hear it from now on

my piece for @harriertail's warrior cat cover zine, which can be found here! this was the first big project i have been involved in, and i had a blast working on it :3 thank you so much for including me!

some progress things below!

side note, this was the first drawing i made after switching from medibang to clip studio paint. it took me extra long because i didn't know how to use the tools or brushes lol.

to start off, i wanted to capture frostpaw's initial joy and whimsy, but also set an ominous feeling, like things aren't quite right here.

one of my first ideas was frostpaw finding the star-shaped leaf. although i liked this idea, i wasn't confident in my ability to draw this background, and i felt that the colors leaned too dark and dramatic.

another idea was mistystar having her heart attack. these colors were closer to what i wanted- the bright yellow colors of the original cover- but i felt that frostpaw should be the main focus.

i combined some elements, resulting in frostpaw and the star-shaped leaf in the foreground, with mistystar in the background. mistystar eventually migrates to the sky, inspired by the polish covers.

i still wasn't happy with my colors, and i was struggling to draw the cloudy sky. i decided that a water feature would be a good idea, since this book heavily features riverclan, and i gave up the purple colors i had been trying to integrate.

finally i landed on the colors and composition that i was happy with, which leads to the finished product!
