Knuckles did not got designed by sonic 3 devs to have a crescent moon symbol on his chest to contrast with Sonic's round belly as the sun for you guys to say shadow is the moon to sonic's sun!!

Also shadow isn't the moon! he's a star! his chest fur and quills resembles a star shape! when he first got awakened in sa2, he grants wishes like one does to a shooting star and he falls to his doom at end of sa2 like a fallen star!
