“he opened the door for me.” sofia says it all dreamy, like it means something. like it’s rare, fragile, and blooming with potential.

you don’t even look up from your phone. “mm,” you hum. “he’s been doing that since he was thirteen.”

sofia blinks and scratches the back of her neck. “seriously?”

sarah snorts. “it’s true. he used to forget, and she’d just stand there in front of the door with this little princess expression until he realized.”

“okay-” you cut in, glancing up finally, a little smug. “it wasn’t like that.”

“oh my god, yes it was,” sarah says. “you wouldn’t move until he circled back like a sad little butler. even my mom started calling him your footman.”

you roll your eyes but don’t deny it because it was kind of true. it started small in the second grade. at the school doors, you just… paused and expected, with your foot practically tapping the ground. rafe, confused but eager to impress even then, jogged back and opened it. you smiled and he lit up.

then it was car doors…and pulling out your chair…and standing on the traffic-facing side of the sidewalk. not because you asked, but because you expected. you’d grown up around the kind of southern men who took off their hats when they walked inside and never let women pump their own gas.

and rafe just adapted. he learned your world like it was a second language. you never noticed. not until girls like sofia started fawning over “how sweet” he was.

you didn’t have the heart to tell them he still slammed doors when you weren’t around. that his idea of flirting was practically insults and bruised knuckles. that the only reason he even knew to grab your coat when it was cold was because the one time he didn’t, you gave him the silent treatment for an hour.

“he brought me a drink before i even asked,” sofia adds now, hopeful. “that’s sweet, right?”

you shoot sarah a look. she doesn’t even try to hide her laugh. “he only does that because of her.”

“what?”

“i mean, come on. you think he was out here reading etiquette books? he learned all that shit from being around her twenty-four-seven.”

sofia falters. “i…guess that makes sense.” her cheeks burn with something unusual.

you hum again, biting back a smile as you scroll. because rafe may be a lot of things—loud, reckless, occasionally unhinged—but to you, he’s always been the guy who brings your favorite snacks when you’re pissed. who pulls you behind him in a crowd without thinking. who mutters “careful, babe” every time you trip over your own feet, even though he’s the reason the hallway lightbulb’s still out.

and when he walks in ten minutes later, sweaty from god-knows-what and shirt halfway untucked, he barely glances at sofia. he sees you on the couch, sees your blanket slipping, and without a word, tugs it up over your shoulder before dropping down beside you.

you smirk. he doesn’t notice. but sofia does and for the first time, she finally gets it. rafe doesn’t do those things because he’s nice. he does them because he was raised on your standards. even if he never says it, you both know the truth…

if rafe cameron’s a gentleman, it’s only because you trained the beast yourself.

the air smells like greasy pizza and chlorine. too many people are packed into kelce’s backyard with music that’s always one speaker blowout away from full collapse.

you’re in a hoodie that isn’t yours—his, obviously—sitting on the edge of the hot tub with your legs in the water, sipping a white claw.

and rafe? rafe’s doing that thing again.

the one where he’s not talking, not really listening, just watching you like he’s scared you’ll disappear if he blinks. like he’s memorizing the way your nose scrunches when you laugh, or how you talk with your hands even when you’re tipsy, or how your foot brushes his thigh under the water without even realizing.

someone notices before you do.

“dude,” topper says, with the kind of smirk that makes rafe want to punch him and himself at the same time. “you’re staring.”

rafe doesn’t look away. just shrugs, lazy and unapologetic.

“so what if i am?”

topper raises a brow. “you look like you’re about to bite her.”

rafe rolls his eyes but doesn’t answer. doesn’t need to. because you’re laughing at something sarah said, all flushed and golden under string lights, and it guts him.

because that’s his laugh. it should be. he’s the one who knows your coffee order and which songs make you cry and that you always check under your bed twice before sleeping. he’s the one who holds your hair when you’re sick, who keeps a toothbrush for you in his bathroom drawer, who knows you trace your name on your leg when you’re anxious. he’s memorized every inch of your being.

and still, he’s just your best friend.

you catch him mid-stare about ten minutes later, a slow glance over your shoulder like you felt it. the heat of his gaze burning through your spine.

“what?” you ask, teasing, grinning. “do i have something on my face?”

“nah,” he says. too quickly. too quiet. “just lookin’.”

you narrow your eyes, but you don’t press. you never do. maybe because part of you likes it. maybe because you want him to keep looking. maybe because you already know.

a little later, when you lean into his side and drape your arms around his neck in that drunk and tired way you always do, rafe lets his hand settle on your waist.

he doesn’t say a word, but his jaw’s clenched, his knuckles white, and god help the next guy who touches you like they think they can.

because rafe doesn’t just stare. he claims. silently. greedily. like he’s owed you in every lifetime, and he’s just waiting for you to catch up.

MERMAID!READER who met sarah after being washed up on shore during hurricane agatha. sarah saw something beautiful glimmering in the sand and went to check it out. to her surprise, it was a woman with a tail.

MERMAID!READER who had been terrified as she got swept away by the current. she had never been this close to shore before. she normally stays away due to the horror stories she heard about humans. however, storm watching led to her getting washed ashore.

MERMAID!READER who wasn’t breathing when sarah found her. in a panic, sarah pressed her lips to the lifeless mermaid in an attempt to do CPR. she’s shocked when the girl starts to glow and her tail transforms into legs.

MERMAID!READER whose eyes flutter open to see the prettiest creature she’s ever laid eyes upon hovering above her. who knew why sarah’s lips gave her legs. who had heard tales of other mermaids who shared souls with humans, whose kisses gave them legs.

MERMAID!READER whose first piece of human clothing is sarah’s sweatshirt. after that, she is often found in long, flowing skirts and crop tops. who braids seashells into her hair and is sometimes seen with a flower tucked behind her ear. who is most often barefoot or in sandals.

MERMAID!READER who has an unnatural air to her. whose hair always falls perfect perfectly, especially when it’s wet. who always has a dewy glow to her smooth skin. who moves a little too gracefully to be human.

MERMAID!READER who follows sarah around like a lost puppy. who is a little confused when it comes to human culture, but sarah loves teaching her. she especially loves dressing reader up like she’s her own personal doll.

IN WHICH . . . rafe makes a pact with his childhood best friend

a/n - hi! tysm for 100 followers! i've been sick and also i'm a bit of an inconsistent writer in general, i go where the motivation and inspo take me when they take me lol. but this is my first childhood best friend!rafe drabble! ik i have a few reqs already and just wanted to say they make take me a bit because i want them to be good, so i don't want to rush it and write something bad. and thank you for all of the love on my original post for this pairing! <3

the soft, pale blue comforter was familiar, evidence of the amount of times he had been in your room, sat on your bed like it was his own. rafe lay on his back, staring up at your ceiling while he waited for you to try on your dresss for midsummers. you were going together, of course. you had been for the last ten years. it was just easier that way.

you were especially excited about your dress this year. you hadn’t let rafe see it yet, only sent him a closeup of the fabric so he could match you. it was the first time you had gone dress shopping without him, and he couldn’t help but feel a little hurt by it.

he wouldn’t admit this, not even with a gun pointed at his temple, but he liked following you around the store, arms weighted down by every dress you handed him. he liked being the first one to see your dress, the way your eyes would light up when you looked in the mirror outside the dressing room and knew you found the one.

so, yeah, he was a little upset you chose to go shopping with your girl friends instead of him.

fading remnants of the glow-in-the-dark stars he had helped you put up all those years ago stared back at him. he hears the door to your en suite bathroom creak open and immediately shoots up. his eyes grow wide and he’s pretty sure his mouth drops open when he sees you.

he stares for a few moments, blinking before a soft, “wow,” escapes his lips. “you look…”

you giggle and do a slow spin, causing the skirt of the dress to flare out around your legs. “did i just cause rafe cameron to be at a loss for words?” you tease.

you swear his ears go a little pink. “shut up,” he mutters, but there’s no heat behind the words.

his eyes scan your form again and he lets out a low chuckle, shaking his head, “all the guys on kildare and i’m the lucky bastard that gets to go with you,” he says, almost like he can’t believe it.

“no one else asked me,” you say, and there’s a hint of bitterness in your tone. no one asks you because they’re too afraid of what rafe will do.

“their loss is my gain,” he says with his signature smirk. the one that makes him look care free. the one that twists the knife deeper every time because his only gain is not having some clingy girl wanting to be the new kook princess following him around all night.

you flop back on your bed, staring up at the ceiling and the fading stars. “i don’t know if anyone will ever ask me out,” you admit quietly, a hint of sadness in your voice.

“then they’re idiots,” he says firmly, laying back so his head is beside yours.

you fall into silence.

“if we’re both single at forty, we should marry each other,” you blurt, unsure where the idea came from.

you expect him to laugh at you, to tell you he won’t need to marry you because he’d already have a wife and 2.5 kids, but instead he says, “thirty.”

your eyes widen slightly. “thirty-five.”

he grins and rolls onto his side to hold out a hand to you. “you’ve got yourself a deal, princess.”
