DECONTRUCT AND RECREATE
To begin the deconstruction of the original photograph, I took it into Microsoft Whiteboard to mark out the main lighting and shadows. The red circles within the image represent the blue lighting, the blue circles represent the golden lighting, and the yellow circles represent the darker shadow. In this image, it appears that there were two artificial lights used with coloured gels to create this look, one on the left with a yellow/gold glow and another on the right with a blue glow. The subject is placed in the middle of the photograph with her face turned at an angle. The background appears to be black or very dark. The model’s face in this work is placed slightly off-centre to create more dimension to this photograph, and slightly more edge to the composition. The contrast of the warmer yellow and the cooler blue creates an intentional line down the face. The blue appears to create a calming and serene effect while the yellow creates a comforting and vibrant mood of the model while having a blank expression. I have chosen this image to recreate as I find the colour usage in this piece pleasing. The colours complement each other and create an impactful, balanced contrast that is aesthetically pleasing to look at.
My model used for this assignment was Auste Mockapetryte. I had situated led lights on either side of Auste and placed the coloured gels over them to replicate the look from the original photograph. I directed Auste to recreate the same pose as the original model, but the lighting was not working as intended. Instead, I swapped the location of the blue gel light to the left hand side and the yellow gel light to the right hang side to better achieve the look I was aiming for. Although the lighting was on opposite sides, I believe the final piece came out better. I had used a black backdrop similar to the background in the original photo, but upon reflection I had noticed that the wall behind the backdrop was visible. The glow effect of both LED lights was quite a bit stronger than the original photograph, rather than them leaving a softer look on the face, but despite that I am happy with the end result. Overall, I am quite happy with the result of this recreation despite making a few mistakes during the photoshoot.

LAB FOUR: Studio Lighting (Part 2)
After posting the original raw files of these photographs, I went into photoshop and edited them to fix the lighting and to add more light and life to the models' faces.

IMAGE MANIPULATION PROPOSAL
After researching for this assignment and exploring what possible themes I could use, I finally realised I wanted to explore alien and galactic themes. I found this theme most interesting to me as I enjoyed the idea of trying to recreate an alien-like model. I want to approach this project by creating the “Impossible Image”, an image that doesn’t look like reality but it conceptually interesting.
I intend to create these images by shooting the original photograph first in a studio space using studio lights and a galaxy projector, to create a clearer idea in the RAW image of how I would like to edit my final image and to also test out which colours work best on the model. Once these RAW images are taken I will take them into photoshop and manipulate both the model and backdrop. I intend to make the model more “alien-like” by creating an unnaturally glowy and red/green/blue coloured skin tone, and possibly making the models ears pointer (if the chosen image has their ears in frame). The background will be edited to look a starry sky or galaxy backdrop, to add to the galactic theme. I want the colours to be very vibrant.

One artist in particular who has captured almost exactly what I would like to see from my final image is Ashleigh Kutryb. She made a series of work that recreated alien models with highly edited backdrops in 2022. The colours used throughout this photoshoot are quite vibrant and loud, which I would like to recreate within my own project.

LAB SIX: Experimentation
In preparation for our Deconstruct and Reconstruct Project, we were given our two hours of lab time to experiment in the photography studio. I decided to play around with lighting location and coloured gels as I would like to use unique colouring within my final project. My models used for this lab were Liam Angelo Carraig, Mia Sherry and Robert Slattery.

LAB FOUR: Studio Lighting (Part 1)
In this lab, we had twenty minutes to photograph head-shot portraits using five different styles of lighting - Broad, Split, Rembrandt, Loop and Butterfly.
Working in a group, we rotated models for each practice as to give all four of us a chance to complete this assessment. As this is part one of the assignment, these are RAW unedited photographs. The correlating techniques are named on the photographs above. My models used for this assessment were Mia Sherry, Auste Mockapetryte and Lela Cullen.

LAB THREE: Bounced Flash
In this lab, we explored how bounced flash can be used to create different light situations. I created portrait exposures using the flash in TTL mode. I experimented with this equipment by creating a portrait flash shot with a harsh shadow, and by having my model stand against the wall as seen in the first picture. I also tried out several coloured flash lenses to experiment with coloured shots, the orange lens created a sunset look which I loved. We decided to shoot with our flashes amongst a studio background with artificial lighting.
My models used were Mia Sherry, Auste Mockapetryte, Lela Cullen and Liam Angelo Carrag.

LAB TWO: Controlling Camera Flash
This week we experimented with camera flash control. I tested out the use of the 1st-curtain sync and the 2nd-curtain sync, to play with the use of motion blur and compensated by shifting the shutter speed to a lower setting.
My models used in these photographs were Mia Sherry, Lela Cullen, Liam Angelo Carrag and Oisin McMahon.

LAB ONE: Natural Lighting
In this lab we learned to direct ourselves and our models/subjects in relation to the light. For this, we used natural lighting. the sun light, to our advantage and also used reflectors to experiment with the direction of the light. I used a gold reflector mostly as I thought the shine from it onto the subjects gave a beautiful glowy effect. These photographs were taken both indoors by a window and outdoors.
My models used in these photographs were Auste Mockapetryte, Mia Sherry and Lela Cullen.
