Kissing a girl in front of the Salvation Army church
like leaning out of the kitchen window to flip off God like burning a fainting couch like an obscenity trial like cutting a string of pearls like punching a Manet like ripping a sticker off a bathroom door like wearing satin flares to a funeral like pretending to forget your ex’s name like growing pansies in the desert like falling in love then paying for it
— Phoebe Stuckes, from Platinum Blonde

“Lemonade was not made for me, either. As a Singaporean Chinese woman, I would be lying if I said I was familiar with the complex, myriad ways Beyoncé explores black female personhood, sexuality, and spirituality in the film. But as a non-American, non-white woman, what I am familiar with is appreciating art that is not and will never be made with me in mind. This is a process that white people are now struggling with more publicly than ever. It seems to me that much of the pain in this process comes from entitlement, which often stems from ignorance. I wonder: Do white people in the Western world understand just how much of global popular culture is tailored to their tastes and their histories? Do white people in the Western world know that, for non-white people who wish to participate in and discuss global popular culture, being well-versed in white cultural and musical history is almost compulsory? Do white people in the Western world know how laughable it is that they feel excluded just because a popular work of art dares to be less culturally legible to them?”

“Well, the Gothic can be conducive to suppressed voices emerging, like in a haunted house. At its core, the Gothic drama is fundamentally about voiceless things—the dead, the past, the marginalized—gaining voices that cannot be ignored.”
— Carmen Maria Machado, interviewed by Theodore McCombs for Electric Literature (x)

“May we raise children who love the unloved things”
by Nicolette Sowder
May we raise children who love the unloved things–the dandelion, the worms and spiderlings. Children who sense the rose needs the thorn
& run into rainswept days the same way they turn towards sun…
And when they’re grown & someone has to speak for those who have no voice
may they draw upon that wilder bond, those days of tending tender things
and be the ones.

“It’s so hard to be sincere without sounding pretentious… I mean, what are you supposed to do if you really happen to feel like you’ve swallowed the universe? Not say so?”

“Why do so many body parts sound like hymn: hymen, humerus, hamstring, hip, heart? Or why does a hymn want so much to sound like our bodies?”
