Lee says:
I just read in the New York Times that more trans people vape than is average for the the general population:
“A survey of adolescent drug use last year found that 11 percent of 12th graders, 8.2 percent of 10th graders and 3.5 percent of eighth graders had vaped nicotine in the previous 30 days.
Over all, almost 6 percent of men and 3.7 percent of women were vaping regularly. But there were sharp differences among particular demographic groups.
The prevalence was 9 percent among bisexuals, for example, and 7 percent among lesbians and gay men, compared with 4.6 percent among heterosexuals. Almost 9 percent of transgender people were vapers.
A national panel of public health experts concluded in a report released on Tuesday that teenagers who vape may be at higher risk of smoking, and if they use e-cigarettes before trying tobacco they are more likely to become more frequent and intense smokers than people who started smoking cigarettes without having vaped in the past.
The authors of the new report cite conclusive evidence that vaping can be addictive, and that exposure to nicotine from e-cigarettes is highly variable, depends on the characteristics of the device, as well as how it is used. They also cited conclusive proof that in addition to nicotine, most e-cigarettes contain and emit potentially toxic substances.”
Vaping and smoking are more prevalent among people with depression and other mental health issues- check out our Mental health page for info on getting help. Self-medication with nicotine may be helpful in the short run, but your health will be better long-term if you address the underlying mental health issues instead of picking up an expensive habit that can be hard to quit. Both your physical health and mental health are important!
When I had my consultation with a lower surgeon, they asked if I vaped and said it’s best to not to in the time leading up to a surgery just in case since you should stop smoking at least 6 months before lower surgery.
If you bind, you may want to take off your binder while you vape if you have a hard time breathing, which may happen if you have asthma. Similarly, if you cough a lot (whether it’s due to smoking or a cold) you should take off your binder to avoid injuries to your ribs. Listen to your body!
Vapes can be aids to quit smoking, but it’s about harm reduction. Vaping is healthier than smoking cigarettes if someone already smokes cigarettes and is trying to reduce the amount they’re smoking or quit, but that doesn’t mean that vaping is healthy- there are health consequences. So people who don’t vape shouldn’t start doing it thinking that there aren’t any health risks, even if the vape juice doesn’t have nicotine.
That being said, as long as you’re old enough to legally purchase a vape and smoke, it’s your decision if you want to do it. Just make sure it’s an informed decision- it’s important to do research and become informed about the potential dangers before you start vaping since it can be hard to decide to stop once you’ve started. Vaping is new enough that there aren’t many long-term studies yet, but the links below have some info to use as a starting place for your research:

Not Your Sidekick by C.B. Lee
Welcome to Andover… where superpowers are common, but internships are complicated. Just ask high school nobody, Jessica Tran. Despite her heroic lineage, Jess is resigned to a life without superpowers and is merely looking to beef-up her college applications when she stumbles upon the perfect (paid!) internship—only it turns out to be for the town’s most heinous supervillain. On the upside, she gets to work with her longtime secret crush, Abby, who Jess thinks may have a secret of her own. Then there’s the budding attraction to her fellow intern, the mysterious “M,” who never seems to be in the same place as Abby. But what starts as a fun way to spite her superhero parents takes a sudden and dangerous turn when she uncovers a plot larger than heroes and villains altogether.
Far From You by Tess Sharpe

Four months ago her best friend, Mina, died in what everyone believes was a drug deal gone wrong - a deal they think Sophie set up. Only Sophie knows the truth. She and Mina shared a secret, but there was no drug deal. Mina was deliberately murdered. Forced into rehab for an addiction she’d already beaten, Sophie’s finally out and on the trail of the killer—but can she track them down before they come for her?

“i am not a girl but nor am i a boy at least, not quite. my gender is nebulous it is like a wave in the ocean: fluid and immense. i am myself: i’m both somewhat a girl and not both somewhat a boy and not. sometimes i’m both mostly i’m neither. i am not my gender but my gender is me. i will deny your femininity as i ignore your masculinity (except for when i desire) and i will be simply myself.”
