life is a wild, wild thing. updates:

the meds seem to be helping tank so hopefully we can get to october 1st. he got some bodywork done today (eddie too) and really enjoyed it. 9600 mg a day of gabapentin is fucking insane, honestly.

we are officially approved for theo (that big old giant that i've fallen for) but the 13 year old who wants him either has to finish the 12 week program with him so the organization can say he's not a good fit or pull out early because she doesn't like him.

i don't want to shatter a teenager's dreams but also like .. yes, i do. so cross your fingers, please!

this week is crazy because i'm just getting over being sick, hunter's daughter just had a baby boy (after a 36 hour labor oof) and saturday is an extra long work day for me because it is the kentucky derby (and we're an OTTB rehoming place) so we've got all sorts of events planned.

hunter and i are trying to put in a good amount of time organizing the house when we can

my free time right now is honestly spent playing crusader kings 3 and kingdom come deliverance 2. but it's only in little half an hour bursts.

i'm still around! i am just being called away by other priorities at the moment. i have every intention of getting back to threads and replies soon & really want to being back hook and joe as well. contemplating writing when i can, stockpiling a bit and then building a queue on all of the blogs. i love you all , mates! i hope you're taking care of yourselves. don't do anything i would do !! <3

Hi all. Tank is scheduled for that last goodbye on October 1st but it appears he has fallen or somehow had an acute event that has triggered his neck and neuro difficulties to a new level. We are starting him on gabapentin and upping his pain meds to see if we can get him through it.

My heart is tearing in two. I keep thinking there’s no way I can do this … but growing up sucks and love is sometimes incredibly hard.

Needless to say, my activity will go back to being spotty. I’m just soaking it all in. He has been such a big part of my identity. It’s impossible to imagine life without his presence at my side.

update: new horse is fucking huge. bigger than tank. another family wants to adopt him for their 15 year old girl but work has decided he will not go to her. they think we are the better fit. i am in fucking LOVE, holy shit. and it would be great to have two that are rideable since tank is fully retired now. please cross your fingers as we navigate this decision. i feel awful that i'm wanting a 15 year old girl's dream to be shattered but he's a bit problematic for a first horse i think.

he's got two (phones i mean). one for work and one for personal stuff. i feel like its pretty obvious why. You're obviously not gonna walk around with a phone you send nudes to your girlfriend on (thats a joke) while you do anti-terrorism things that could make their way into pro-terrorist hands. his work phone is very professional (thats a nice way to say boring). The lock screen is just a black screen with the time. The 'wallpaper' is just a default black as well. very cool of him.

his personal phone is a bit different. I think the lock screen is still just a really default, spartan style one .. but his wallpaper would be something ridiculously unexpected, i think .. its either a picture of aurora individually or a selfie they took together making goofy faces. I feel like anyone who knows him would open his phone and look at that and be like what the fuck because its the last thing you would expect. but that's john lucas's secret .. you gotta keep people on their toes.

what kind of dreams to they tend to have?

ones that freak him the fuck out. they're definitely tied to his eight years in russia (and the job in general), but not in the suddenly thrown back into being waterboarded way. i think they tend to be fairly average and normal on the surface. he's doing something familiar and comfortable like lazing around with aurora, her feet in his lap while she works on an article and he reads, skin all warm from the sun that falls through the window... for all intents and purposes, it's perfect. But Lucas finds himself in two places at once - that feeling of being him but also being a third party observer in the back of his mind. So underneath the contentment, there's this growing sense of disquiet and panic. Anastasia's tail swishes back and forth while she watches him and its like the whole world narrows down into that single point while his heart crawls out of his throat. As the dreams devolve from there, they usually become permeated with this ever increasing frenzy as he tries to make everyone understand something terrible is coming and they need to get away from it and the maddening frustration of the quiet voices that try to soothe him. Something in his subconscious is screaming this isn't right, we can't be safe, we can't be happy, this is wrong and he rages against everyone else's inability to understand or listen. Sometimes there are flashes of things he's experienced (galadriel voice: things that were, things that are and things that might yet come to pass) or moments where he bolts awake spluttering on water that doesn't exist.

On the other side of things, he dreamt he was a spy duck once. his 'stakeouts' were just letting people feed him in the park and gathering all the information they let slip in front of him because .. hello.. he was a fucking duck.

definitely. that being said, if he doesn't have to go anywhere (that cold day in hell.) and he's fine with a lazy half-asleep day .. he'll skip a shower. Everyone needs a rot on the couch day when they can get them, even spies.

coffee, all the way! milk only belongs in cereal, juice is too sweet (he'll go with a good cranapple on occasion though, orange juice is a torture implement) and tea has its place ... but coffee is the drink of the gods. the first cup has to be black, like his soul. its like a kick in the groin of wake up juice.

as an iphone boy i really wanted to say that because you can look at lawsuits etc about how hard it is to extract data from an iphone and our current govt here in the US uses iphones (my dad was issued a special one) but apple also has major security issues. i think the united states cares less about it because they have more availability when it comes to getting in the back door with that firmware .. but .. anyways .. i went down a rabbit hole and did some thinking and I'm gonna say (since we're throwing out the idea this is all happening in 2007), that he uses a librem 5.

A few different reasons why, really .. but my main selling points are a) the kill switches and b) the way you can easily replace different componenets. being run on a linux system is a bit eh for me because it means there's more open availability, but i think it also works to his benefit in that regard. he gets to change things how he wants as long as he has some sort of basic knowledge in regards to what he's doing and he definitely would.

yes! sort of. none of the intricate cityscape / farmville / whatever else style games though. simple things. mahjong and sodoku. he very rarely plays either one because he doesn't spend a ton of time on his phone, but out of the two.. he spends more time on sodoku. he would absolutely play some type of co-op thing with aurora though if it were possible to just keep it between the two of them. something that they each could get to whenever they had the time. being able to check in and see she had finished her turn and it had moved to him would sort of be like a little hug (my words, not his) in the middle of a crazy day.
