Aphrodite 

Greek goddess of love, sex, war, beauty, passion, procreation, pleasure, desire, fertility, and the Morning Star

Before the Greeks called her Aphrodite, she was known to them as Astarte, who was their renaming of the goddess Astoreth/Ashtart from Egypt and Canaan (in turn, a renaming of the goddess Ishtar/Inanna). It is likely that Aphrodite was paired with Ares in her mythology in order to portray her more warlike side and show harmony in her complex personality. As such, her many lovers symbolize her sexual nature and how the Greeks would interpret love, but Aphrodite claims to be much more devoted and loving in romance than she is portrayed to be.

When Uranus, god of the heavens, was defeated, his phallus was cast into the sea. Suddenly, a bubbling of blood and sea foam emerged at the surface. From this arose a giant scallop shell (representing the vulva), which bestowed upon the world a goddess who outshone all other things in creation. She stepped upon the shore, resplendent in her nakedness and smiling sweetly at the enraptured deities. Wherever she stepped, flowers grew and the birds came to sing to her. The Horai (the hours) clothed the goddess born of the heavens and sea and brought her to Olympus. The Horai clothing Aphrodite likely symbolize that Aphrodite is of all times of day, for she is beauty and beauty does not end.

Although she was primarily a goddess of love, sex, and beauty to the Greeks, Aphrodite was still honoured as a goddess of war and was known to bring victory and strength in battle. While she is indeed loving, she is also terrifying and has the ability to sway humans to her will- encouraging chaos wherever she pleases. Due to this, she was the bringer of frenzy and even the Fates would bend to her will. Should you cross her on the battlefield, you would not win. Though she is also a goddess of passion. She is indeed of great and powerful love, though also anger and hatred, thus connecting her with crimes of passion and even death (especially on the battlefield). This all made her one of the most feared deities of Ancient Greece. As thus, she is the terrible beauty, the red rose with its thorns.

In my personal experiences with this goddess, she is extremely powerful, romantic, elegant, passionate, cunning, ambitious, wise, confident, and empathetic. She is not entirely a “soft and pink” goddess but can be gentle when she wants to be, otherwise, her presence to me feels like fire. Though when gentle, her energy feels like pure ecstasy and beauty, so much so that it brings tears to one’s eyes. Aphrodite is not shallow in the slightest and is a deeply compassionate and wise goddess who will stand tall and proud alongside her followers; she will never allow any of them to feel weak or ugly. She has a wondrous healing touch, able to heal any sort of emotional wound and is incredibly soft with those who need this. 

As a goddess of fertility, Aphrodite adores all of nature and loves children deeply, causing her to often act motherly towards devotees. She highly adores romance, as it’s her most favourite emotion. So she enjoys watching romantic movies, chick flicks, fantasy, and Shakespearean movies. She is deeply supportive and likes to pamper everyone, making sure they feel good about themselves, or at least helping them with it. In my workings with her, Aphrodite is a truly magnificent goddess who is so vast in personality, representing absolute beauty and unending love. 

For myself, Aphrodite has two appearances- one as a femme fatale sort of woman who is tall and slender, with long wavy black hair, piercing blue eyes, and wears a deep red dress adorned with gold and diamonds. But when I’m in need of a more gentle figure, she appears naked or in a revealing dress, has strawberry blonde hair, green eyes, red lips, and is extremely beautiful to behold. Her voice is always gentle but it radiates power. She often smells like roses and has a laugh that can make one’s heart stop with how sweet she is. She isn’t extroverted but is rather socially confident and friendly, so she can become quiet at times.Though when Aphrodite talks about something she loves, she quickly lights up. She is incredibly sweet and generous, making sure to help her devotees with whatever they need and helping them to enjoy life’s pleasures. She is welcoming of all people, not just women, and supports those who transition as well.
