I like to think its purely out of instinct. He notices pomni in a certain light, or he smells a certain scent, or he see's something that ticks him off. He can try to fight it in the moment, but he won't remember anything before or after. He basically thinks he was rebooted or put into a sleep mode out of nowhere. Obviously, he knows something is wrong, but he doesn't acknowledge it.
