i’ve been still thinking about my story for a while now and wrote a bit more today (tweaking my previous wip)
---------------------------------------------
The dust was ever present at the dig site, but it was manageable, and at least it wasn't as bad as Earth's moon. Charlotte gently wiped her brush against the settlement ruins peeking through the dirt underneath and lightly traced the inscription with gloved fingers. It was amazing that she was here at all, recording her findings and thoughts on a long dead alien civilization. Her heart felt full when she thought about how hard she worked to get where she was in life, but she also recognized how lucky she was that her father was a renowned anthropologist. Which was why she decided to fight her father's legacy to study not humans, but aliens. She could at least stand on her own merits in that field.
She leaned in, her headlamp illuminating ancient writing of a civilization that traveled the stars while her ancestors had stared up at the sky from huts. Marveling at the colors and details still present, she decided to record for a bit.
"I'm here on exoplanet Rellis, in the Hybraxis system. We're at some ruins about 19 klicks from Corriplata. The mural pieces that we're seeing are from a civilization dating back thousands of years. Amazingly, some pieces have survived the decay of time and radiation from space. Look at the coloring here, brilliant blue, and something here - obscured by some kind of incandescent light. It looks like an outline of some humanoid figure, the aliens in this case, but that person is small compared to what they're trying to illustrate, which is the light emanating from or around that person. And within that light, you can see a faint outline of something. Wings? It's a tremendous find on its own, but that figure amidst the light is seen quite a bit here. We think these people either worshiped or revered this figure."
She moved along the unearthed mural piece, gently tracing the carved stone curlicue designs at the top.
"The carved spiral petroglyphs seemed to be a reoccurring theme. Maybe it was a popular design at the time or maybe it held spiritual symbolism like rebirth or some such. Over here we see some kind of painted inscription. Since this planet's discovery, we've been studying this lost civilization and had our computers assist in breaking down repeating patterns within the language. We wanted to see if the language was similar to Earth languages in that there are some words that are so common they'd be used more often. They called themselves the Sofvai, but we really don't know that much about them yet. It's been exhilarating to learn more each day. I wish-"
"Dr. McGuire, it's getting late. We should head back"
Charlotte looked up to see her associate, Dr. Morrison, walking towards her. She waved to her, turned off her recording, then began putting her tools away. As excited as she was about this site, she knew it was deadly to not follow protocol on Rellis, even with the protective field covering the settlement. She glanced up at the stars above, seeing nothing but the expanse of space as Rellis had an almost nonexistent atmosphere. She could see the distant sun shining like a fiery white beacon against a smaller sea of stars, and to the left she saw Rellis's companion moon Minos. She stood up when Dr. Morrison arrived and slung her satchel of tools over her shoulder, ready to depart with her.
"I'm ready, Dr. Morrison. Have you heard back from Gabe yet?"
Dr. Morrison shook head, sending her spiral dark curls bouncing, then glared off at the landscape beyond them. "He's not here and he's not answering comms. We'll head back to camp to see if any messages came in, but we can't stay here."

There's anti-nanites that are unleashed, an alien mutagen that transforms everything to serve a long dead civilization.
So all it does is consume whatever falls into that sector of the galaxy.

i want you to know, i think about my story at least once a day, maybe every other day.
it has space pirates, nano tech, ancient civilizations, aliens, double triple crosses, morally grey space pirate crew fighting the bad pirates who have to draw a line in the sand, love, alien planets, alien relics/tech, interspecies politics and xenophobia, etc..
it’s pretty cool

i decided that in my story the nanites don’t quite have sentience, their grasp of it is dog level at best
and when they communicate to the MC they use cute little pixel sprites on arm computer that look like space invaders pixels

ok so everyone and their brother has probably seen this image of how the universe actually looks like, but really think and absorb this:
Each of those bright spots are actually super clusters of galaxies. They are not individual galaxies. Scientists used a super computer to recreate what the universe looked like according to their data and this image popped out. They had to take a much larger view to get a clear image, so individual galaxies are almost impossible to pinpoint but they can find super clusters because they shine the brightest. And all this is held together in a vast web of dark matter, which holds and contains the universe and galaxies, and actually makes up much more of the universe than regular matter.
And the point I’m trying to make here is this - human beings tend to think that the universe is this dark and empty place, but if you pull back and see how interconnected everything is, you get this kind of picture. We may be infinitesimally small, but each of us is connected to so much more than ourselves, and that adds to the universe. Stars, solar systems, galaxies, on and on until you have this web of light.
This picture is actually beautiful in so many ways.
idk - positive thought for the day
