In ‘The Battle of Waterloo Road’, published summer 1941, Robert Capa set out to capture the spirit and resilience of ordinary men and women in dark times. The principal subjects (Tom Gibbs, a policeman; Mrs. Gardner, a charwoman in the Air Ministry; Father Hutchinson, the vicar of St. John’s and Frank Hibbs a lieutenant in the Home Guard) were typical Londoners of the working-class district of Lambeth, engaged in the daily struggle to keep going through the heavy bombing of the Blitz, conditions for which they had no precedent.
