Why wouldn't Han or Leia recognize or suspect Rey as their daughter when she shows up with the exact same hairstyle as a decade ago?
Are we sure it’s the same hair they’d recognize, though? In my version of the theory at least Rey was in other people’s custody before she ended up on Jakku. Due to her amnesia she wouldn’t remember what her hair was like beforehand, and the only one she can go with in the hope of recognition is the style she had at the time she was left on Jakku.
On Han or Leia’s side, we don’t know what they recognized or suspected. “Are you my long-lost and probably dead daughter?” is an awkward conversation opener with a total stranger, especially since, if Han and Leia had lost a child, they’d have been seeing her everywhere. Every child around that age would bring back memories and, if there was any kind of resemblance real or imagined, futile hope.
We do know that Han resonated with Rey and felt a desire to mentor her. (Much as Kylo Ren did, hmm.) He was giving her long significant looks on the Millennium Falcon (am I ever glad shippers didn’t get a hold of that), and when they landed at Takodana this exchange happened:
[Image description: Han takes a breath before asking Rey, “You got a name?” She answers “Rey” and he repeats, “Rey.”]
So he’s asking her her name. Most prosaic exchange ever, right? Except look at the way he visibly steels himself, hesitating and taking a deep breath, before he asks the question. He’s asking her goddamned name. What’s the big deal?
The camera does something odd here, switching from Rey’s face to Han’s just before she speaks. It’s Han’s face we’re watching, not Rey’s, as she gives him the answer: “Rey.”
And look at Han’s face when she answers. He needs to take a moment to process it, and as he repeats her answer–”Rey”–a corner of his lips curls up ever so slightly, as though thinking to himself, what were you thinking, you damned nerf-herder. Despite the faintly sardonic expression his eyes seem so sad to me.
I don’t know, this seems like a really odd reaction to such unremarkable information and does not make sense without some deeper meaning attached to the question and the answer.
The pause before repeating her name isn’t the only time he takes recovering from this exchange, either. Look at him right after he says “Rey” and before he brings up the job offer:
[Image: Han turns from Rey, his mouth works, and he blinks while she looks on with a small smile.]
Again, he’s visibly composing himself. Maybe it’s just the crusty old smuggler working up the nerve to ask, admitting to caring about some kid he’s just met, but he seems to me like he’s rattled and needs to take a moment. Maybe it’s just my theory goggles, but together with the earlier odd pauses it seems suggestive to me. His eyes seem sad throughout the conversation, as though he’s touched an old wound that was better left alone and excuse me while I go sob to myself.
Then what does she tell him? That she’s flattered (or would be if he were offering, whatever) but she has to get home and was already away too long. To most people that means family, that there’s someone waiting for her. She hasn’t told anyone in the party but BB-8 that she’s waiting for her family, remember, and it’s not like BB’s going to blab it to everyone, far less someone whose only words to him were “move, ball.”
So as far as Han knows, not only does Rey not know him at all but the name doesn’t match and she has a family to get back to. Strike three of three. And again, if Han and Leia had lost a daughter they’ve been seeing her in every girl her age for the past fifteen years. This is nothing new and Han would already be berating himself for allowing himself a moment of false hope.
As for Leia, we have one interaction between her and Rey in the final movie and it’s a long hug before a single word is exchanged (except possibly by comm ahead of Rey’s arrival), a hug that the script describes as “a mother’s embrace.”
I mean, this could be a lot of things. Rey’s been through so much, having been kidnapped and tortured, watching Han’s murder and Finn’s wounding, and frightened about Finn’s condition. Leia could simply be comforting a traumatized young woman, so I don’t put too much stock in this as evidence. Han’s complicated emotions while talking to Rey are far more suggestive to me. Nevertheless, the hug is also not a ground for saying Leia suspected nothing.

I wonder…if it’s possible…that Sangwoo killed his dad in order to straight out replace him. That is to say, to intentionally push him out of the nest, so to speak, and usurp his place as his mum’s new /whatever/ (lover? husband? caretaker? all three??). I’m sure he would have had enough of him anyway bc of the abuse. In high school he would have felt ready - physically and mentally, to take on his dad. His mother would have rejected this bizarre move even without his killing his dad, and in turn would have rejected him. and his delicate ego would have found that unbearably insulting. It could be why he killed her. I’m sure Sangwoo had many delusions of grandeur about how he would treat her better (and this is where his dad’s abuse could come into play. he could see himself as the hero in this situation), and he probably felt entitled to that. & when she rejected him, he felt like she was refusing his /generous/ offers. And we all know how Sangwoo hates ‘ingratitude’ lol. feh
