Strangelight (2024), acrylic on canvas 30 x 20cm.
This work was inspired by the song Strangelight by the punk band Fugazi, looking to match its atmospheric mood and sense of unease.

Fiesta (2024), acrylic on canvas 30 x 20cm.
The title, Fiesta, alludes to the Ernest Hemingway novel The Sun Also Rises (Fiesta) which details the running of the bulls and bullfights of the Festival of San Fermín in Pamplona.

French Window (2024), acrylic on canvas 30 x 20cm.
The title French Window refers to the Matisse-esq composition and relates to his flirtation with abstraction in his painting Porte-fenêtre à Collioure.

Mycenae II (2024), acrylic on canvas 30 x 20cm.
Following on from previous works, Mycenae II continues the use of black and off-white bands set an equal distance apart but also uses a two-tone approach to the black. There’s a thin layer and a stain over a previous black layer which shows as a blue/grey finish under the final coat.

Broken Windows (2024), acrylic on canvas 150 x 90cm.
There’s so much going on under the surface in this painting. Not only are there many layers all referring to the previous one laid down, there are about five or six points at which I could have finished and they would have all looked very different from each other. One of the many things I enjoy in my painting process is the serendipitous way they come together.

Harbour (2024), acrylic on canvas 30 x 20cm.
Another small painting exploring the single black band across a multi-layered, off-white ground. The title is really only due to the poetic sound of the word which matches the feeling I get from this piece.

Mycenae (2024), acrylic on canvas 30 x 20cm.
As shown with my Harmonics series, I like to explore bands of black tightly pushed up against one another and the effect it has. This little piece follows in a similar vein but has more space between the bands. I couldn’t get Ancient Greek pottery out of my head having completed this, hence the name.
