There is a very small, sad knight that lives inside my ribcage who keeps asking when we can go see the princess to ask for her favor before the joust and I don鈥檛 have the heart to tell him that there is no princess, no joust, no castle, no brothers in arms, no helmet to hide his face, no armor to protect him, no sword to fight back, and nothing to be devoted to. The world is so much bigger than he could ever imagine but it鈥檚 not built for him.

First time off work in too long and my Internet is down. Probably for a few days because this looks like a war between ISPs as my mother has decided to switch. New ISP made all the connections and stuff except we still don't have their router. FML.

Visited my future lease horse tonight. Just sat in her field while she grazed next to me. Very peaceful moment, I think I needed the breath of fresh air, literally and figuratively.

It may not have been love at first sight but I've come to really like this little horse. He is not the most flexible, the most sensitive, or the most expressive, but his kindness and gentle patience has been a blessing, and I think meeting him was just what I needed. Thank you again, Astro

The name "Jane" is a female version of "John", and if Wikipedia is to be believed it developed not out of "John" directly but as a more novel and upper-class version of the then-commonplace "Joan", also a female version of "John", in the manner of the Kayleighs of today.
But "Joan" is still weird, because it's like that for no clear reason -- the original masculine/feminine pair here is like Johannes/Johanna, which explains nothing! It ends up in German as Johann and Johanna, and stress changes can induce vowel changes, but you'd expect that to work the other way round, with the unstressed O becoming shorter, so it seems to just be that "John" and "Joan" appeared at different times and the need to distinguish them kept the latter from drifting as far as the former. You can see the same general thing happening with "Steve" and "Steph", with the opposite gender/vowel length relationship.
So this isn't very systematic, obviously, and it hardly ever happens. But isn't it tempting to imagine us adopting a convention of gendering names by ablaut?
Bill (m.) -> Beele (f.)
Jeff (m.) -> Jafe (f.)
Bob (m.) -> Bobe (f.)
Dan (m.) -> Dane (f.)
Mike (m.) -> Make (f.)
Greg (m.) -> Graygue (f.)
Keith (m.) -> Kayth (f.)
Scott (m.) -> Scote (f.)
James (m.) -> Jymes (f.)
and so forth

the problem with water is like. it's the cleaning fluid right. that's the obvious part. you stop drinking and you stop peeing and your kidneys are like ough. ough. ough. ough. but you don't die. unless you're not drinking anything At All and not eating watery food either. so all it is is you pee less but you're okay. kind of.
BUT THEN when it gets too hot it starts being the coolant! and suddenly there are so many ways it can get out! you have so many sweat glands and so much skin and they all need to be cooled down before you DIE.
but then. you realize the least obvious one. it's the transmission fluid. it's the fucking transmission fluid. you can't transmit SHIT without your fliud. which is still fucking water somehow.
so now you're LEAKING your transmission fluid out of every goddamn pore and your kidneys are like hey. gimme that cleaning fluid cmon dude. while your pores are like ITS COOLANT. NEED COOLANT. FOR THE FIRE. NEED MORE COOLANT. SO MUCH FIRE. KILL IT. KILL IT MORE. MORE COOLANT. and then. the rest of you. that uses all that fluid to transmit things. it's like hey. hey. hey what the fuck.. i need that. hello? can anyone hear me? hello? it's so dark in here..
and then you drink more water or you die.

OMG. Might have found a half-lease. One of the riders I often hang out with at the riding school called me to say she鈥檚 considering buying a horse and if she鈥檚 going through with it, she鈥檚 offering to have me have a half-lease on said horse. Our former riding instructor approves. 4-year-old baby Irish Cob mare, been started just recently, but apparently really chill. And she鈥檚 super pretty. Dappled smoky dun with a gorgeous mane. Nothing鈥檚 set in stone yet but this is exciting.
